The U.S. House of Representatives shot down a proposal Friday by U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz, that would have built an 854-mile, double layered security fences along the Mexican border.
Franks noted that only 13 miles of a Mexican border fence approved last year have been built and that the fencing is needed to improve border security.
"With over 4,000 people crossing our southern border illegally every day, our border remains one of our country's most critical national security vulnerabilities. In order to carry out an act of terrorism, a militant Islamist simply needs a porous border and a dangerous weapon," said Franks in a statement.
Franks represents Glendale, Peoria, Sun City and Kingman.
The fence plan failed by 272 to 149 votes. Most Democrats (including Arizona congressional members Harry Mitchell, Gabrielle Giffords , Ed Pastor and Raul Grijalva) voted against the border fence plan.
Most Republicans (including Franks and fellow Arizona Reps. Rick Renzi and John Shadegg) voted for the comprehensive fence plan.
Mesa GOP Congressman Jeff Flake crossed party lines and vote against the border fence bill.
The House did approve an overall homeland and border security appropriations bill Friday. Mitchell said he backed that bill because it allocates federal money to hire more Border Patrol Agents and resources to deport violent illegal immigrant criminals.
"Deporting those illegal immigrants who have committed violent crimes is absolutely imperative to keeping our communities safe," Mitchell said in a statement. Mitchell represents Tempe and Scottsdale.
The state's four Democratic representatives and Renzi voted for the final bill. Flake, Franks and Shadegg opposed.
The votes could be a precursor to a big political fight over immigration reforms, a guest worker program and how to deal with the 12 million illegal immigrants already in the U.S.
I’m all for that. It would be the most worthwhile ‘adventure vacation’ I ever took. Let’s get it rolling before the final Senate vote.
I think we can get some heat going by putting our reps on notice. Calif’s DiFi responded to demands for pardoning Compean and Ramos by calling for congressional committee to investigate. But she also voted against the fence.
Start calling on Melanie Morgan, Michelle Malkin, and Hewitt, Gallagher, Mark Levin, Hannity,Sussman, Lars Larson, et al.
It’s worth a try, isn’t it? We can boldly remind the Parliament of Hoes that this is a government of, by and FOR the people (citizens). . . and if they don’t believe us..wait ‘til 2008.Meanwhile, stop contributions. But we’ve got to get organized and BELIEVE we can at least draw some blood!
All that makes very good sense. Keep going.
Ping me.
great idea,

Do the same with the House. And then do the same with the staffs of the scallywags, as they are the ones doing much of the dirty work, secretaries, clerks, etc, who really need the jobs, which we are paying them to do.
then we focus, all freepers, no matter what state, to defeat the leaders who are marching our country to oblivion.

please put me on your ping list.
we must act. we are on the verge of losing our country.
Thanks for your post. As a matter of fact, I have been searching this am for a copy of the 1986 amnesty bill by Simpson and Mazzola. I am very inerested in knowing the exact reasons it failed. I’ll keep looking and maybe some emailing today for help.
Forget the fence, build a minefield.
We'll have lost our country by that time. We need to stop this thing now.
I live in Illinois. I have two blue-rat senators that are an embarrassment to the state, the nation, the world, the solar system, the galaxy and the universe.
You have work to do.
This seems like a nightmare of sorts.
Didn’t Congress pass and Bush sign into law this last October?

Hunter Applauds Signing of Secure Fence Act
Washington, D.C. Today, Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) commended the enactment of H.R. 6061 (King-NY), the Secure Fence Act. The legislation, coauthored by Congressman Hunter, calls for more than 700 miles of strategic security fencing on Americas land border with Mexico.
“The Secure Fence Act is a critical piece of legislation that delivers greater security to our nations Southern border,” said Congressman Hunter. “Regaining operational control of this region remains one of our greatest priorities and this legislation is a significant step toward achieving this goal.
“The benefits associated with border security fencing are evident in San Diego County, where more than 10 miles of double-layered infrastructure has been erected. Since border fence construction began in 1996, crime rates in San Diego County have been reduced by more than half, vehicle drive-throughs have been eliminated and apprehensions have significantly decreased as the result of fewer crossing attempts.
“Securing our borders requires a multi-faceted approach in which fencing is a very important part. The Republican led Congress has remained focused on strengthening border security and the Secure Fence Act further underscores this commitment.”
In 1994, Congressman Hunter legislatively mandated the construction of 14 miles of double-layered security fencing between San Diego County and Tijuana, Mexico. Construction began in 1996 and, despite years of dilatory legal and environmental challenges, the remaining 3 miles of fencing have been set for completion. The Secure Fence Act replicates the successful design of the San Diego Border Fence two layers of fencing separated by a high-speed border patrol road and monitored by accompanying infrastructure and personnel requiring its construction in five separate locations totaling more than 700 miles.
People in IL never have been much good at picking out senators. Of course, you are not alone!!!
I hope somebody is keeping a list of who is on our side and who is not.
While you're there can you go ahead and build it? ;-)
Good idea. Every one bring a 4x4 and some wire.
Not a surprise. Feinstein is a member of CFR.
Bump for later reading if I can keep my lunch down. This is like watching the most beautiful girl in high school throw her life away on drugs.
Can anyone explain what the heck is happening in the house? First they vote to withhold fed money from sanctuary cities , but then they do this. It’s like trying to follow the writings of a madman.

Washington, D.C. The U.S. House of Representatives this morning voted to withhold federal emergency services funding for “sanctuary cities” that protect illegal immigrants.
Anti-immmigration champion Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., sponsored the measure, which he says would apply to cities such as Denver and Boulder. He was elated by its passage, which stunned critics and supporters alike.
