Yeah, that was a great one. When it was all said and done, I think Six Feet Under was the better show too.
That's the "ending" I came up with too. It seemed like an obvious nod to The Godfather. Remember Michael Corleone going into the bathroom to get the gun?
Say what you want about the Sopranos ending. It wasn’t as weird or as bad as that show that followed it, John from Cincinnati. They gave up Deadwood for that????
I agree. Six Feet Under’s final episode was superbly satisfying and, excuse the word, ‘terminal’.
Tony & Co.’s fade out was suspenseful though !!!!
The people that saw the show as dynamic and more than just a show about the Mob, will be the people that loved the ending. Those who didn’t see the Sopranos for all its complexities in the past 6 years, won’t like the ending or understand it.

Sorry, I got the show. I got what Chase was trying to say with the non-ending.
But what he really said, whether he wanted to or not, was “I’m too tired or too worried about future money making opportunities to really write a meaningful, satisfying and enlightening ending.”
Life goes on. Family's all you really have. Gee. That's deep. I could have gotten that nugget of wisdom from a Starbucks coffee cup and saved the hour.

In the back of her mind she knows she's a dumb ass but plays like she's the smartest person in the room.

New Yorker was watching th show with a soldier who had three tours in Iraq behind him. The soldier probably did not appreciate the assumptions, thoughts and remarks made by AJ and his parents regarding the military and the war because their thoughts and opinions dont come from an informed perspective.
I thought the ending was perfect! Tony came out on top with Phil being knocked off and a truce being called with the NY family. His personal family is somewhat back to normal (as normal as that family can be). A.J. finally has some direction with Tony basically putting him on the payroll and he and Carmella have finally come to terms with Meadow’s career choice. Nice Norman Rockwell setting in the diner at the end with a cross-section of America all present and the family enjoying each others company for the first time in I don’t know how long. Talk about a TENSE few minutes!
I have read so many posts about how people are upset that there was no finality to the series, but there was! Tony came out on top, he is alive. As far as the ambiguity of the final scene, when you live in a world that Tony lives in, you are always going to have charges pending against you or have the threat of being knocked-off. Such is life in the mafia. I think those who are ticked about the ending have just become accustomed to Hollywood endings where everything is spelled out perfectly for you, where test audiences are used to find out what the ending should be.
Kudos to Chase for a perfect ending to a perfect series.

I heard that it ended with Bob Newhart waking up in bed after a crazy dream.
In the final scene, Tony wakes up in the morning and you realize the past 8 or so years was just a dream he had. He then gets dressed and heads off to work as a hi-lo driver at one of the Ford plants.........
Chase was setting the audiance up to expect the guy to come out of the bathroom firing - just like Michael in The Godfather.
With Phil gone, the war is over. Life goes on and on and on.
That was my first thought as well and the whole cut-to-black, no audio at all creeped me out. My wife asked "What happened??!" My reply, "Tony just took a bullet in the head..." I loved it and was surprised this morning to see so many people with different interpretations of the ending, especially given the conversation with Bobby about death which basically described the last scene last night perfectly.
Of course I am assuming that I am right in my interpretation! If I am, and that is what Chase intended then I thought it was brilliant. Any other explanation would tend to make me consider the ending horribly lame. Someone on another forum said that the "man at the bar" was named in the credits as a Leotardo. I didn't notice it myself though as I was too busy pacing around the living room. :)
That wasn't the interior-decorating Russian from the Pine Barrens episode, the other guy wasn't Billy Leotardo out for revenge and the two black guys weren't Uncle Junior's hired killers from the first season. All just ordinary people going about their business, though Chase did a great job in showing the kind of paranoia that a guy like Tony must live with. The final cut-to-black? Us - the audience - getting whacked. It happened just as Bobby told Tony said it would 8 episodes ago - without warning, just an end to it. Show's over.

I thought this was a brilliant end to the series - the show has always been about the concept that there are no easy answers.
From the very beginning, when Tony has a panic attack and expects some drugs and a quick cure from a shrink, we have been shown time and time again that there are no pat endings, no shortcuts, and no easy answers.
What a WASTE of time. I think Chase is a sellout.
The cat thing and the whole bit about whether or not Paulie would take over the construction jobs were all just big distractions. I wish they’d have used that time to clean house on a few of the threads that have been left open over the years. Whereas Tony won the little turf war with Phil, I would have had him “clean house” on some of the unfinished business from seasons past. I was really wondering whether Tony would kill Dr. Melfi.
The ending, rather than saying anything meaningful, lets folks believe whatever ending they want. That whole dinner scene ending with the blank screen allows you to determine any of three different scenarios:
1 – Tony will have to live the rest of his life looking over his shoulder. (ie: the ominous guys coming and going from the diner, each a potential threat).
2 – Tony will live happily ever after and the whole family is back together and getting along fine. (ie: all the guys coming and going from the diner were nothing after all).
3 – Tony gets hit and is killed instantly as he looks up, and is distracted by Meadow entering, the guy leaving the mens room puts a bullet in his head. This would explain all the recent metaphors about never hearing the one that gets you, and the sudden fade to black and silence.
That was the type of ending that makes dimestore psychologists and overeducated imbecile film critic types swoon.
When the screen went black, most of us wondered whether we’d paid our cable bill. Then, when the credits finally started rolling, we cursed, and questioned why we’d been loyal fans of the series for the last eight years.
In any case, it leaves everything open for sequel film(s), which was about the only valid point I think Chase made here... the point being that he’s a businessman first, and a writer second.
It’s not like we haven’t been subjected to this before. Every season, the final few episodes get tense, and a few guys get offed, but every year, they leave a LOT of unfinished business and a LOT of unanswered questions. I guess most folks thought this would be different, and that they would finally tie a bunch of loose ends into some form of cohenrent ending one way or the other... WRONG.
Well... I’m thinking I’ll probably cancel HBO today.
