One Buffalo woman was so afraid of the gun in her possession that she swaddled it in a baby blanket and wrapped it with mounds of duct tape.
Another elderly woman was overjoyed to finally get rid of the gun she found tucked away in her grandsons bedroom.
These were just some of the stories behind the 422 residents who participated in the citys gun buyback program on Saturday by surrendering firearms in exchange for cash cards. The cards ranged from $10 to $100, depending on the type of gun.

So, when’s the police auction?
LOL! Who are the freepers that are responsible for this!
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
...or she could have just unloaded it, but I guess her way was better.
“...get illegal guns off the street...”
Yeah, right.
The only reason some of these guns are illegal is because of NY’s restrictive laws.
I love how they declare their goal of getting illegal/stolen guns off the streets, but haven't yet determined if any of these guns fits the criteria.
I meant to say that they declared their goal MET of getting illegal guns off the street....
In our area, we found they were using the $50 bucks towards a better weapon.
348 out of 878 is a majority? Seems to me it would be more correct to say that the majority were not handguns.
Well, there is a profit opportunity I never thought of.
I wonder how many times they will return it to me, before they catch on?
LOL, that was the first thing I thought of too, and the first thing I would have done.
“The buyback is being financed in part by $30,000 in assets forfeitured through seizures from drug probes and other crimes.”
LOL! The cash went full circle
I have always wanted to set up a table across the parking lot with a book of gun values, and let these people know that they might just be giving away $1000 or more. It might change some minds, maybe it won’t. Granny turning in her late husband’s Sako or Sig Saur might get cheesed knowing the sheriff’s dept. just shorted her a grand.
you got it.
Isn't that revealing? The author no doubt decided prior to having any information that the majority SHOULD BE handguns. The value of the entire exercise would be diminished if the greatest effect was to remove weapons that are NOT used in crimes. It just wasn't very important to check the numbers to verify such an important fact.
Um. Not something I would try.
Or, at least, make sure you have a big sign, “Free speech about gun values, stop the oppression of free speech”, or some such.
Might save your tail in court.
A couple of gun collectors in Wichita did work the lines at a police buy-back, offering to pay more than the cops for valuable guns. One old guy turned in a $1000 Luger for $50. I always assume the cops grab any decent gun that turns up at a buy-back. At least the cops are checking for stolen guns in this instance.
I saw that too. The good residents of Buffalo are so much safer without the threat of 279 nonworking BB guns! Now those kids can afford working BB guns.
My bet is they won't try very hard.
