There are any number of reasons why people love Fred Thompson and why he should win the 2008 Election should he run for President of the United States. But for right now, lets start with why he is especially unique.
Fred Dalton Thompson is perhaps the best example of what it takes to belong to an exclusive fraternity of people who have been through the revolving door leading from politics to Hollywood and back. But unlike the late-great Jack Valenti, he wasnt just a lobbyist in a nice suit and unlike Ben Stein, hes not merely a speechwriter who went on to say Bueller, Bueller, Bueller, hock eyedrops and challenge you to win his money on television.
And although Thompson is being compared to the so-called Great Communicator Ronald Reagan, you dont have to dig through old black and white movies or Cold War era revisionist history texts to find him. You can catch him on cable and network TV re-runs probably right up through the election. Lastly, unlike Arnold Schwarzenegger, well lets just say hes unlike Arnold.
Fred Thomspson has a serious chance to win the hearts of the American people because for more than 30 years, he has lived out his act. Hes actually made a great living playing himself. Hes been a prosecutor in real life and a prosecutor on televisions Law & Order. Hes been a senator on the silver screen -- Born Yesterday and an actual U.S. Senator from Tennessee. Hes also been a rear admiral, a director of the CIA, a high ranking FBI agent and a White House Chief of Staff but to his credit, anyone can do those jobs.
And to think, he could have just been another cranky attorney telling you to get off his lawn but now he may well be the most complete candidate out there even though he hasnt announced that hes running. But, really, he left Law & Order on May 30 and has been on the talk show circuit ever since so unless hes prepping for a roll as a retired actor and senator who almost ran for president, hes given the public every indication that hell hit the campaign trail this summer and autumn.
It all began in 1977 when the story of a Tennessee Parole Board scandal, which Thompson helped expose, later became the subject of a 1983 book, Marie, written by Peter Maas. Roger Donaldson, a director, copped the film rights to the book and in the course of doing research in Nashville, interviewed Thompson among others and was apparently so impressed he asked him to play himself. Since then all he had to do was show up and talk in that heavy southern drawl, a baritone molasses that brings to mind your grandpappy and just screams authority figure. Hes the real deal and also knows how to handle himself on and off camera. Lets see how he stacks up against front runners from both parties:
Thompson and the Donkeys
Fred Thompson vs. Hillary Rodham Clinton
Thompson has also been a U.S. Senator so Hillary cant pull the lack of experience card out on him. Given his voting record and the fact that he always stays in character, he edges Hillary out in the sense that he is not a carpetbagger or panderer who bristles up when challenged and backs his way out of previously established positions like Hillary did with the Iraq War. Scandals? Please, Thompson was as co-chief counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee in its investigation of a little thing called Watergate. But Hillary will dig and she will go there after digging. But in the end the public will find that Thompsons association with the Garn-St Germain Depository Institutions Act of 1982, which in part caused the Savings & Loan crisis in the late 80s is a far cry from what Whitewater eventually unearthed. Hello!
Fred Thompson vs. Barack Obama
A lot of people talk about how articulate and good looking Obama is. They talk about his youthful vigor, his audacity of hope, the courage that will keep him from lighting up a square (cigarette for those not familiar with ghetto talk) when his wife is not looking. Hes lauded as a Kennedy-esque vision in black. The truth of the matter is, that neither the staunch conservatives, nor the former Dixiecrats, nor the patronizing-ass northern white liberals who bought his dinner plates to hear him speak are going to vote for him. Lets face it, hes black. Mainstream America says its ready and people chant, chant, chant until they close the curtain and go down the list and pick somebody white. Lets face it, Obama probably wont be a hit south of Chicago, west of New York and east of California and thats the area where people actually still vote. He mightve had a chance with the condescending-ass Hollywood limousine liberals but chances are that guys like Kevin Costner, Alec Baldwin and Bruce Willis are going to say: I worked with Fred, I like him, he cant be all that bad considering the other choices. Lets see Fred Thompson or black dude. Think Ill go with Freddie boy!
Fred Thompson vs. John Edwards
This probably presents the biggest challenge for Thompson as he will be going head-to-head with someone who is neither a woman nor a person of color. Edwards is a good ol boy south of the Mason-Dixon line just like Thompson is. You also cant count out the fact that Thompsons wife, while not a stripper as MSNBCs Joe Scarborough intimated, is still hot enough to host E! News Daily and despite her credentials in the Republican party, is too cute to be taken seriously and cant stand up against a woman who has fought cancer. Hate to put it in such shallow terms but you cant beat a cancer survivor with a doped-horse, a full-house, three of a kind, first and goal or anything else -- its impossible. The only way Thompson pulls this out is to have his people focus on Edwards status as a loser. Not only did he lose in the primary to John Kerry, he lost as a vice presidential candidate in the general election and went on to lose cool points getting expensive haircuts and championing efficient energy while living in a energy vaccum of a mansion like the homie Al Gore. In the debates, Thompson can just bring it back to his status everytime Edwards makes an eloquent point. He can even get folksy with it: Cmon yall are you going to believe Fred Big Daddy from down home Thompson or this loser.
Thompson and the Elephants in the Room
Thompson vs. John McCain
For a longtime the former P.O.W. thing was really working for McCain. Who doesnt support the troops? They dodge bullets and landmines while we sit on our asses, eat crispy chicken sandwiches and write about people we dont know behind the sublime but anonymous glow of a computer screen in the middle of the night. Then he decided that supporting the troops also meant supporting the troop surge and its hard to say that you take no prisoners in the war on terror when someone actually took you as a prisoner in the war on Reds. Not a good look dawg. And consensus builder, consensus schmilder. The GOP is looking for a bullheaded polarizer with all the ol boy heh, heh, heh of Bush but just without the George W. part. A true conservative, Thompson fits that mold. McCain, meanwhile, as The State newspaper in South Carolina suggests, suffers from guilt by association with Ted Kennedy and Dianne Feinstein on immigration. Being a white man sandwiched between the Greatest Generation, and Baby Boomers, Fred Thompson would likely be tough on all brown and black people as well as big on small government and bullish on tax cuts. Sounds like a winner to me. Sorry John, maybe vice president? Probably not.
Thompson vs. Rudolph Giuliani
This is a no-brainer. You cant invoke 9-11 forever. Its like Chris Rock once opined, why is this guy a superhero for doing his job, going on television calming people down, assessing the damage and getting out there so that his city could see he gave a flip. And even if you concede that what he did is commendable, it was seven years ago. Heres another reason: the rule of the WASP illuminati shadow government establishment is one Catholic per bicentennial. We already had JFK. Plus, after he put away all of his brethren from the old country, support from the Gotti boys might be out. Besides, this cat cant leave the Tri-State area and pick up votes. No one cares about him once you get out of the Holland Tunnel. But heres the key: Old people vote but when theyre not voting, theyre watching procedural dramas. Fred Thompson in a landslide. Because, the old lady from Brooklyn who always pokes her head out the window while youre trying to serve your crack to dope fiends in peace; the old lady that you wish would pass on or get put in a nursing home so you can take over her rent controlled flat; the old lady who wouldve voted for a fellow Brooklynite Giuliani - when she went to the library in Crown Heights, is only going to remember the nice man from Law & Order. Because she cant remember, Giuliani, Thompson, why her son isnt calling and her drug prescription information.
Thompson vs. Mitt Romney
Okay, so what do we got here? Theres an Actor-Senator, a woman, a black man, a Catholic adulterer, a rich white pretty boy tort lawyer, a Vietnam-War-Hero-turned-Iraq-War-Zero and a Mormon. Chances are that there are many people who might put a woman and possibly but not probably an (clearing throat) African-American before a Mormon at the polls. But if you go in order from last to first on the list at the beginning of this paragraph, the choice is pretty clear for any mainstream American being honest with themselves who wants a candidate who they think or know can win.
Time will tell whether Academy Award Winner Al Gore jumps in to mix it up or if some red herring, planned terrorist threat or Osama Bin Laden mixtape hitting the streets will shake things up. However, given American cultures obsession with actors and the propensity for those actors to make the smooth transition in politics, Mr. Thompson might have his hand on a Bible on the steps of some white building come January 2009 and it wont be because he was so remarkable. It will be because Americans for all their hypocrisy political correctness and fickle consumer nature are the truest when they get in that booth and no one can hold them accountable for their natural fears and prejudices as well as affinities and preferences. Did you hear that? I think that was the Law & Order bell. And
scene

The following is a portion of what Fred has said on Ilegal immigration.
“I think its time for a little plain talk to the leaders of Mexico. Something like:
hey guys, youre our friends and neighbors and we love you but its time you had a little dose of reality. A sovereign nation loses that status if it cannot secure its own borders and we are going to do whatever is necessary to do so, although our policies wont be as harsh as yours are along your southern border. And criticizing the U.S. for alternately doing too much and too little to stop your illegal activities is not going to set too well with Americans of good will who are trying to figure a way out of the mess that your and our open borders policy has already created.
My friends, its also time for a little introspection. Since we all agree that improving Mexicos economy will help with the illegal-immigration problem, you might want to consider your own left-of -center policies. For example, nationalized industries are not known for enhancing economic growth. Just a thought. But heres something even more to the point that you might want to think about: What does it say about the leadership of a country when that countrys economy and politics are dependent upon the exportation of its own citizens? “

I agree - weak analysis
That’s my take on things, anyway.
Academy Award Winner Al Gore”
Academy Award Thief, Al Gore...
There, fixed.
Bruce may be the only conservative of the group, but since all of them have worked with Fred, they might just consider voting for him, if they have no real preference for the Democrat.
LOL! Nah, Fred would wipe the floor with John Edwards at the first debate, just by showing up. Then with the first question, Fred would show that there is nothing between the ears on the Silky Pony's nicely coiffed head.
YEEEE-HAW...GO FOR IT!
grossly underestimating his opposition...
Ditto. Good post.
Fred Thompson has said we have to enforce Border Security, make sure we stop those coming in, so that we CAN concentrate on dealing with just those who are here, and not have to continually bail out the leaky boat.
Fred Thompson left public service in 2002. At a point he acknowledged after September 11, 2001 as critical: “Now is not the time for me to leave”.
Fred had his choice of Senator or Governor to contribute to “the long hard road” of critical issues like terrorism.
He chose to work for DisneyABC instead. And the public was left with a weak southern boarder. So I understand that Fred’s empty rhetoric didn’t exactly defeat terrorism or solve board problems in the last five years? We have a new homeland security agency though. I should thank Fred for contributing to guide that agency too?
It is very clear that Fred wants the border enforce, and will use a policy of attrition to remove people. Just because he said we can’t deport all of them, doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to remove most of them.
I think most people feel disillusioned after 1986 when we had this deal offered to them before, and now were insisting that, you know, we solve the security problem first, and then well talk about what to do with regard to other things - certainly no amnesty or nothing blanket like that.
If we can make it nearly impossible for an invader to get a job and give the border patrol the authority and resources to arrest illegals and send them back where they came from, more than half the battle will have been won.”
His daughter died.
How many times do you need to be told that he left the senate because his daughter died?
If you want to pick on Fred, there are a number of things that you could pick on him for. Choosing this one only makes you look like lowlife scum.
Thompson/Brownback ‘08 would work for me to, if you drop the Brownback (Amnesty) part.
We’re at war, with a lot of sacrifice. How is Fred supposed to handle the stress of President if he can’t handle difficult times with loved ones?
Hunter’s son, a marine/hero serving his second or third tour of duty in Afghanistan, is, at the same time, running for his dad’s congressional seat. How about them apples!

Diversity gains are in eye of the beholder
Networks, orgs see different views of progress
By JABULANI LEFFALLA
Assessing the advancement of diversity goals in the three years since CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox publicly pledged improvement is a bit like watching the movie “Rashomon”: The story changes with the observer.
“We believe very little progress is being made,” says Ron Hasson, president of the Beverly Hills/Hollywood chapter of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People. Hasson claims the networks and studios won’t release statistics to track progress in the hiring of minorities.
Then there’s the network side.
“We’ve made incremental progress and incremental strides,” declares Mitsy Wilson, senior vice president for diversity development at the Fox Group. Unlike the other networks, Fox has established a diversity policy for all the units in its entertainment group, including the film studio.
Wilson bridles at the suggestion Fox makes no numbers available. She notes that 19 of 22 Fox series have writers or producers of color. And 17 have at least one director of color, and together they account for 100 series episodes this season.
She also says Fox meets every six months with the partners in the Media Coalition (besides the NAACP, the coalition includes groups representing Latinos, Asians, Pacific Islanders and American Indians). “We provide them with written data showing that progress is taking place.”
Last year, the NAACP established its Hollywood bureau in an effort to track the industry’s progress. This came after the rights org in 1999 backed off a TV boycott threat but demanded that the industry create more positions both in front of and behind the camera for minority candidates.
“A boycott’s always been a possibility with us provided the needed steps aren’t taken,” says Kweisi Mfume, head of the national NAACP. The group plans to issue an update report in May, “Out of Focus, Out of Synch Vol. 2.” “The report will highlight what the industry did as opposed to what the industry said it was going to do and also what the industry just plain didn’t do,” Mfume says.
“Hollywood will tell you, look what we’ve done for you: Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won an Oscar in the same year,” says Hasson. “Great! But that’s two people out of thousands. Plus Oscars don’t create jobs. We don’t want lip service or empty and soft symbols of progress, we want tangible results.”
While many organizations play a wait-and-see game for making employment inroads in mainstream entertainment, perspectives differ on available opportunities. Some bilingual Latinos, such as Veronica Alvarez, marketing director at Fox Sports Intl., are taking advantage of the global marketplace.
“There’s an enormous market for Latinos both internationally and right here in America,” she says. “What’s great is that there are more jobs where you can stay in your element, speaking your native language.”
In addition to Fox, Disney has and is creating Spanish-language programming. There are also the large networks such as Univision and NBC-owned Telemundo that are ripe for talent recruitment.
On the perhiphery, non-profit organizations like five-year-old Latino Public Broadcasting are making waves. “There are network shows like ‘George Lopez’ and ‘Greetings From Tucson’ so we’re making some progress,” says Lourdes Ortega, spokeswoman for the group. “While the mainstream is slowly creeping along, LPB is actively funding up-and-coming filmmakers using PBS, which has been a portal for a lot of Latino programming.”
Besides the diversity units at the networks, Workplace Hollywood was an organization created in the wake of the NAACP demands. The nonprofit was formed in May 2000 and got nearly $6 million from an offshoot of DreamWorks and other charitable organizations to serve as a clearinghouse for minority talent.
The group, which today has employees from other major studios on its board, seeks to help individuals from historically under-represented groups. In addition to those minorities who are part of the media coalition, it includes women, gays and the disabled.
(The network diversity units also encompass women, gays and the disabled. Casting such a wide net is one reason a number of the groups in the Media Coalition, especially the NAACP, feel marginalized. It’s also a reason the term “minority” has virtually disappeared from the lexicon, since women are a majority of the population.)
Workplace Hollywood’s Miles Bernal, director of staffing, sums up the group’s aim: “Is it about time diverse people got a fair shake? Yes. Can we guarantee a job? No. Can we give diverse candidates the flexibility to compete? Certainly.”
Since November, Workplace Hollywood has placed nearly 50 applicants at companies such as E! Entertainment, Ticketmaster, Fox and Warner Bros. However, most of the positions were either entry level or temporary.
Tracey Edmonds, prexy and chief executive of Edmonds Entertainment Group, is on the Producers Guild of America’s diversity committee and believes that while individual minorities have made strides, there’s little decision-making power for them.
Says Edmonds, who produced the “Soul Food” franchise for the large and small screen: “By and large white people are still deciding if, how and when minorities get hired.”
He didn’t HAVE to run again. It wasn’t a DUTY.
If he’s president, he fulfills his job, just like he fulfilled all he contracts before getting into the race.
