And now for the other side of the coin. Several years ago, in a very liberal area of the US, an Assistant U.S. Attorney journeyed to South America to marry his fiancee, a foreigh national, and arrange an immigrant visa for her return to the US as his wife. Told it would involve a wait longer than he was willing to endure, he had her obtain a tourist visa to enter the US, and, at the advice of a senior immigration executive in the attorney’s city, coached her to lie to the inspectors at the US airport, then tried to change her status from tourist to legal immigrant in the local office. When a sharp examiner caught the fraud, he was confronted, and immediately turned to the deputy in charge of the local office for help, the very one who had advised him earlier in the scheme. You can guess the rest. He skated, the application was approved and they lived happily ever after. The only bright spot was when the prosecutor approached a senior immigration investigator and asked fretfully if he was going to be prosecuted for the crime, the agent answered, “Why? Your office never accepts our cases.”
