The collapse of the giant immigration overhaul in the Senate might demonstrate that the dreaded status quo -- 12 million people living in the country illegally and more arriving each day -- is not really so dreadful after all.
The multitude of interests involved in the immigration debate -- business groups, ethnic lobbies, politicians in both parties and the American public -- in the end proved unwilling to yield enough to support the bipartisan compromise.
As California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat who helped negotiate the failed deal, said, the current immigrant situation in the United States is a de facto amnesty. Even the most ardent advocates of a border crackdown concede that it will be impossible to apprehend and deport 12 million people living here illegally.
But as much as everyone complains about the situation, the enormous black market in labor operating openly in the United States serves the interests of many involved, however imperfectly. It is an amnesty without amnesty.

The Senate might yet resurrect the bill. Feinstein and other supporters vowed Friday to press forward. President Bush is scheduled to meet Tuesday with Republican senators at the Capitol.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., threatened to attach the immigration overhaul to bills naming a post office if it comes to that. "We are not giving up; we are not giving in," said Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, the top Democratic sponsor.
I’m gonna build a fence around my yard.
I’ll bet I finish one acre before George does.
Who’s gonna take that bet?
I’m hoping for easy money....
BTW, conservatives have no plan to take back their own party....much less the house and senate. Their best plan for taking back the presidency is probably Fred Thompson. I think I like Hunter better, but Fred looks like he’ll do fine.
Yeah, you haven't caught that?
It's very Orwellian, IMO
But Carolyn isn’t honest enough to say “I support open borders”.
Instead she repeats the lame-brained line from the RATs’n’RINOs in the Senate who are now saying the exact same thing. It’s the new party line. “If you don’t like this bill, it means you like things the way they are.”
It’s probably not stupidity after all. It’s probably pure agitprop. Big Lie. Straight out of Trotsky and Goebbels.
Carolyn is smart enough to pick up the signals from what her masters are saying and loyal enough to repeat them like the puppet she is. (Which, when you think about it, is pretty frickin’ stupid.)
Build the Fence.
Jail employers found with illegals working for them. Jail landlords who rent to illegals.
The illegals will leave fast enough then.
This is a crock! The American people want the existing laws enforced!
WRONG, pinko writer Carolyn. What it means is that Americans don't agree with the Quisling Senators about formalizing our surrender to the reconquista.
U.S. Constitution, Article 4 Section 4:
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,
1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
The Congress has passed laws that give a preference to the uneducated, and to criminals. Only honest people need fear enforcement.
So, let's change that. Give each country out there a combined quota of immigrants, visitors and "illegals". There's no reason at all for Mexico to get all the "illegals" or even a preponderance of them. This category must be shared with India, China and Pakistan (and others).
Modern technology should enable us to easily account for these folks.
So, let's say Mexico has a quota of 100,000, and we take a look and they've got 500,000 illegals, 50,000 legals, and 10,000 tourists. We grab the tourists and send them home. We round up the legals (the easiest category) and send them home as well. Then we start on Teddy Kennedy's "preferred class", the illegals, and send home 400,000 of them.
You can see how this might apply to other countries.
No doubt the folks still back in the old country will be mightily discouraged to prevent "illegals" from coming to America.
2006 immigration bill contained a 700 mile fence.
We’re supposed to forget all about it. Build the fence, then we’ll take a look at the invaders.
>>Immigration bill’s demise suggests many are OK with status quo<<
Let’s see.
I don’t want to make things worse.
So obviously I like them the way they are.
Gosh, how smart journalists are some times.
Disclaimer: The above post is not meant to disparage all journalists all the time.
That's the only thing Congress can do to improve things.
What baloney! What it means is it's a bad bill and people don't want it passed. Geez! Don't these guys have a clue? Build the fence...and enforce current laws.!! Harsh fines for employers. No Amnesty! If they can't work they won't be able to stay.
I wish you many more-and very happy-years on earth. Especially since I agree with you! Sincerely, Nucluside
Just say NO to Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!

The money was spent so the communist instructors could do more brain washing and get more converts.
