Republicans and Democrats scrambled Thursday to salvage a fragile compromise that would legalize millions of unlawful immigrants after it suffered setbacks.
The measure, a top priority for President Bush that's under attack from the right and left, faced a crucial test vote designed to measure senators' appetite for the "grand bargain" between liberals and conservatives on immigration.
The legislation failed a similar hurdle earlier in the day, and Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., threatened that if it failed again, "the bill's over with."
Republican negotiators were working to break an impasse on a proposal that would let employers continue to handpick the high-skilled workers they want to get green cards, rather than requiring workers to qualify through a new, government-run point system.
That change, sought by Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, with vigorous backing from the high-tech community, could upset the delicate balance underlying the contentious immigration measure.

EXCELLENT!!!
Now enforce our current laws!
I just refreshed and noticed that it had already been posted. My apologies — didn’t search.
Now all of the gutless wonders in the Senate are pointing fingers at each other while vowing to bring it back at a later date.
If I hear this BS: “What’s your alternative?” one more time, I’m going to puke. A bill was passed last year to build more fence, etc. Just enforce the damned law and build the fence. If Bush refuses to enforce the law, then we need to impeach him.
Bookmark and remember their votes.
Call and thank them, or call and remind them that you know how they voted.
Great. Now we need to kill HR 1022 (AWB renewal) and then simply use the solution on ILLEGAL (the fact I feel the need to emphasis that word represents a large part of the problem) immigration everyone but the politicians want: Enforce the EXISTING Laws.
However, doing the right thing and enforcing the existing laws will NOT lead to the following:
1. Expansion of government agencies
2. Expansion of government unions
3. Cries for yet MORE agencies to assist and study the new agencies.
4. Demands for more agencies and “blue ribbon panels’ to study the agencies that are studying the agencies.
I’d go on, but the Monty Python reference would be overdone.

The “alternative” is to vote all these traitors out of office. They’re all arrogant and too stupid to realize that the American people are on to their power games. Send them packing at the first opportunity. They’re liars as well as ego maniacs.
Right..Reid wants to bring it back by end of year...I’m willing to bet they do it like their pay raises...DEAD OF NIGHT!!!!!!
Maybe now these clowns will listen up when America tells them “Why dont you start by supporting existing immigration laws vs. creating new ones!”
Sounds as if our congress critters just can’t understand what the folks back home are saying. Perhaps we should send them down the road.
Nothing worth while, Trent.
Okay, now Congress and Bush:
GET REAL!
CLOSE THE BORDER!
STOP FURTHER ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION NOW!
Then we'll talk about some bill.
ENFORCE THE LAW!
OBEY THE LAW!
THEN WE'LL TALK.
