Senator Byron Dorgan TRASHES Immigration Bill
self | 06/07/07 | gas0linealley

Posted on 06/07/2007 4:37:07 PM PDT by gas0linealley

In what may have been one of the US Senate's greatest speeches, Senator Byron Dorgan just trashed the Immigration Bill and poked fun at its framers.

Senator Dorgan said about the bill: "It's about profits for big economic interests". He hammered repeatedly at the fact that there had been no consideraion given to American workers in the crafting of the legislation.

The Senator commented about recent news stories that illustrated how employers are keeping relentless downward pressure on worker's wages and using cheap legal and illegal labor to do it, while management is getting huge salaries and retirement packages.

Senator Dorgan said that he has been in the Senate long enough to have seen various pieces of legislation proposed which have been assembled by "gangs of twelve" etc. and all of them claimed to be grand compromises but were without exception terrible bills. He mentioned how their proponents, "puffed up with helium or hydrogen", come to the podium to tout their worthless proposals.

The Senator from North Dakota believes that we already have the laws on the books to take care of the immigration problem, they just lack enforcement. He says that the first order of business is border security.

If you missed Senator Dorgan's remarks, you owe it to yourself to find them and listen or read.

He’s a lot more honest than most of our Rep senators have been.

He authored the amendment that sunsets the guest worker bill.

I’d vote for the man over most of the R’s I’ve heard speak on the issue.

..which is exactly what this whole thing was about.. IMHO, this was a trap to split our side.. if it wasn't intended originally, the PTBs on the left saw the opportunity and created it that way.

I’ll look it up, it’s probably posted at Dorgan’s Senate website ... but he seems to be putting this all on business, forgetting that the unions are pushing it, too. They stand to gain a vast new membership .. it’s not just ‘Big Business,’ it’s ‘Big Labor’ and ‘Big Government’ interests, too

You betcha.
I saw it and noted that this dorky looking helmet head was doing a knockout job dumping on this AMNESTY bill of McCain/Kennedy/Specter/Bush.

He was pretty damned eloquent and crystal clear in his logic and his anecdotes actually made sense and had the sound of truth to them.
Now, THAT is not something you get from a senator very often, is it?.

Don’t you think they are saying these things simply to pander.. do you honestly believe the dems believe this?

I believe Dorgan actually believes this. I think most Democrats are drooling over this bill because it will greatly increase the number of unskilled and uneducated citizens who will vote for Democrats.

I don't mind giving credit to the Senators of either party when they right about an issue.

“We need to look at individuals, not Dem or Repub.”

My father was a Democrat, and I have always voted Republican.

I used to ask him why he didn’t like the Republicans. He answered that Reps were in the pocket of big business and he didn’t think that was good for the country.

After what I have seen in the last five years, I now agree with him.

If this is a trap, President Bush gave the Democrats the plans for it.

I checked DU. There are hardly threads on this subject, and what posts there were were skeptical of the bill. They didn't like the cheap labor for corporate profits.

The Dems are supposedly being led around by the nose by moonbat leftists, but in this case I do not sense any energy emanating from the hard left crowd. It is the political class elites vs. the populists of both right and left.

I think Mccain just got body slammed. LOL

Sounds like someone wants to keep his job.

I really don't care if this is genuinely felt, or political. What he said is the truth, whatever the motivation. He's the one that got an amendment in that is giving the pro-business lobby fits and hurting this bill's chances. He may be a Democrat, and Kyl may be a republican, but it's Dorgan listening to the people NOT Kyl. In the end it wouldn't hurt this country to have more politician's listen to the people for a change, even if they are doing so to save their political hides, rather then give the lobbies full reign of the Senate and protect their collegues first.

As of this moment sessions and Dorgan are the two doing the linos share to kill this bill and I'm going to support them in that.

They are trying to get a Quorum call again. So far no luck. Roll call going on right now.

I’m still feeling ill for finding myself agreeing with some of what Bernie Sanders was saying earlier. It’s not his fault he was right, that honor goes to the demopublicans.

Yeah, did you think it was possible to be on the same side of an issue as Sanders? Scary.

Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri delivered a few remarks today also. She stressed how the employment of illegals has crippled law abiding businesses. Said that we have the laws already, just need to enforce them. Calls employment of illegals the “magnet” that draws them. Stop that magnet and they’ll go away. Wants to imprison offending employers for six months.

I’d guess that 99/9% of the calls from his constituents wanted him to vote against the bill

Bingo. Not enough illegal in ND to tip the balance (yet) in what is a traditionally conservative state. And I’m sure he’s been hearing the uproar. So it came down to a choice between Ted Kennedy and his own job. He chose wisely.

Trap?

Just what in the hell did those devious Dems do to force our Republican Senators and President into saying these things, and pushing this bill?

It’s one of two things:

Either our Rep senators are malevolent and trying to force this thing down our throats. If so, they should be fired.

Or they’re to friggin stupid to be in politics, in which case they should be fired.
