In Vermont, nascent secession movement gains traction

At Riverwalk Records, the all-vinyl record store just down the street from the state Capitol, the black "US Out of Vt.!" T-shirts are among the hottest sellers.

But to some people in Vermont, the idea is bigger than a $20 novelty. They want Vermont to secede from the United States -- peacefully, of course.

Disillusioned by what they call an empire about to fall, a small cadre of writers and academics is plotting political strategy and planting the seeds of separatism.

They've published a "Green Mountain Manifesto" subtitled "Why and How Tiny Vermont Might Help Save America From Itself by Seceding from the Union." They hope to put the question before citizens at Town Meeting Day next March, eventually persuading the state Legislature to declare independence, returning Vermont to the status it held from 1777 to 1791.

What I don’t get is the nascent part. My sister moved to Vermont about 30 years ago. As a transplanted Southerner, she noticed right away that there was a significant movement for “secession.” She was quick to point out that that argument had been waged a hundred years ago, and why were they on the otherside of the argument then?

This is an interesting post, reminiscent of “devolution” going on in the UK, but it is not new.

Well, this is definitely an improvement. The last time a bunch of Democrats wanted to secede, they thought it was OK to own black people.

I completely agree with the secessionists. But, likely different reasons.

This should be encouraged. I cannot think of anything more useful than the loss of Pat Leahy and Bernie Sanders in governance. A border fence may be needed.

titus,
I could not say it better. Let the liberals leave this time (140 years ago we conservatives left); they can join socialist Canada; and maybe the rest of us could revive the original Constitutional Republic ( the pre-Lincoln one ).

At least what’s left of it after the Mexicans re-take Texas and the southwest.

T Q C:

We should be so lucky!!

Unfortunatly, there are a few small towns in Vermont that are not SOCIALISTIC!! A few years ago, when the Gay marriage was heating up the town I go to had a sign out ‘We Believe in Traditional Marriage’, also in 2004, they had a sign out saying ‘SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!!’. Also the Northeast Kingdom (red area) wouldn’t want to secede from the USA.
Vermont exports are: 1) Maple Syrup, 2) wood products and 3) young Vermonters. Jim Douglas, the Govenor, is not a RINO. He is trying to get the state on a solid footing.
