GLYNCO, Ga., May 29 President Bush took on parts of his conservative base on Tuesday by accusing opponents of his proposed immigration measure of fear-mongering to defeat its passage in Congress. If you want to scare the American people, what you say is the bills an amnesty bill, Mr. Bush said at a training center for customs protection agents and other federal agents here in southeastern Georgia. Thats empty political rhetoric trying to frighten our citizens.
It was some of Mr. Bushs toughest language as he started an intensified effort to build support for the compromise bill in the Senate.
The measure hews to Mr. Bushs long-sought goal of a new system with a path to citizenship for 12 million illegal immigrants, a guest-worker program for noncitizens and tighter borders.
The compromise, which leaders of both parties struck almost two weeks ago, has met stiff resistance from the left and right of both parties. Liberals tend to oppose the section that would add emphasis on admitting immigrants with education and job skills and less on family reunification. Conservatives tend to dismiss the plan as an amnesty bill. It was the conservative opponents to whom Mr. Bush seemed to speak most forcefully here.

Its horrible but if I knew Bush was going to go this far left I would never have voted for the man. This bill could destroy this country.
Or, you could create a Department of Homeland Security and not secure our borders nor enforce immigrations laws on the books.
And continue to have 12M unknown ILLEGAL aliens living in our country in a time of "war," 5.5 years after the worst domestic attack in our country's history.
Empty political rhetoric, Mr. President??
“Mr Bush’s toughest language...” One tough dude. Ouch! Impressive. Keep up the LIES little Bush!
Sorry Dubya, you're deadwrong, its amnesty. And telling Americans the truth is not a scare tactic either.
Big disappointment Bush has been.
What scares our citizens, Mr. President, is scamnesty. And that's the simple truth.
I wish the dems would bring impeachment and be done with him. I want a president Cheney! Surely he wouldn’t support the giveaway, aka amnesty.
Bush is destroying the Republican party.....And to have anything to do with Kennedy makes it even worse.
I honestly don’t know who to trust anymore.
Why do I keep hearing that clip of Al Gore shouting, “HE BETRAYED OUR TRUST!!!” :*( :*( :*(
I’m so disappointed in my president. :*(
Not a bad idea.

Oh boy, this is rich. Sorry Mr. President, but your politics SUCK. This is a tactic of a desperate, legacy building, elitist, pro-illegal, open border, sovernignty busting, ignoring the will of the American people, SELL OUT OF THE AMERICAN CITIZEN. And it is pathetic. And it is going to ruin our country and cause problems beyond belief that will make the opening of Pandora’s box seem like child’s play.
This bill is a disaster, a travesty and clearly AGAINST THE WILL OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. And worse yet, it is NOT A SOLUTION to the problem of illegal immigration.
But this is from the NY Times! < /Bushbots >
I cannot remember the last time I was so disappointed in anyone.
Bush makes this happen and it will be the death of the republican party.
3 out of every 4 immigrants votes democrat for at least 1 generation. Bush is completely deluded if he believes they will vote republican just because he pushes this legislation.
Easily 40 million immigrants will end up in the USA within a decade after all the extended family and children arrive with them once the first foot is in the door.
The entire country will have the same voting demographic as California.
Trust youself. Don’t trust federal government politicians.
Yeah, that's right, and it IS amnesty and that's what's scaring the heck out of Americans!
Under Clinton, we redefined the word “is”.
Under Bush, we’re being forced to redefine the word “amnesty”.
