Social conservatives bite bullet, back Rudy [his backers pray]
Politico ^ | May 28, 2007 | David Paul Kuhn

Rudy Giuliani, whose positions on abortion and homosexuality mark him as the most socially liberal Republican presidential candidate in more than a generation, is so far winning the contest for the support of social conservatives, according to a new analysis of recent polls.

Widespread perceptions that Giuliani is the most electable Republican in this year's field are driving his support among social conservatives, according to the analysis by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

If the trend holds, this apparent willingness to support a candidate who fails what were once regarded as litmus-test issues would mark a landmark shift in the political behavior of a constituency that has been a pillar of the modern GOP. Already the shift is spurring sharp debate among prominent Christian conservative leaders, some of whom warn that Giuliani backers are abandoning core principles.

Is it the pollsters, or the so called "social conservatives" they talked to, who are smoking from the same crack pipe that Jorge "Amnesty" Bush is smoking from? Or both?

I'm a social conservative and my tagline should give them a clue about what I think about Rudy.

So when Hillary appoints Ruth Bader Ginberg’s three socialist sisters during the next 8 years, how does that help your cause?

Will that make a whit of difference if the "big tent" republicans sell us out to the UN and drown us in illegal aliens? What real advances can the GOP claim against socialism, really?

No sir. I am voting my principals from here on out. Screw "compromise". All that means is the same "flush" in slower motion.

If the Republicans want to keep this particular Christian Conservative Patriot in "the big tent", I better be guaranteed that I will like what I see.

For some 35 years I have lent my support to the GOP, for most of that time the GOP has been in power. Yet nothing ever changes. Still more sovereignty lost to the UN. Still more moral decline due to social values that should not be allowed. Still more "10 Commandments" ripped out of the ground in front of court houses. Still more abortions. Still more drugs. Still more illegal aliens.

I will not be responsible for electing yet another big tent moron. No more promises. The rubber hits the road this year.

I will not vote for Guliani.
I will not vote for Romney
I will not vote for McCain

If the GOP doesn't figure that out, there will be one more independent this year, and I will not be alone (or back).

If Rudy wins the nomination and the presidency, the conservative movement is finished. (”We can win without them.”)

If Rudy wins the nomination and loses the election, the conservative movement will be blamed. (”We would have won if they would have only gotten behind our candidate.”)

We lose either way.

After all, Land adds, social conservatives “understand they are voting for commander in chief, not Baptist in chief.”

Not sure where you're going with that, but my response is: No sense in defending the republic if you're going to let it wither from within. What's the point?

And I'm not a Baptist.

While I don’t agree with your stance, I do have a sense of humor and I found something you may enjoy:

If Rudy is elected, I believe he will nominate moderate judges that will be able to pass through the Democrat senate. He won't nominate RBG, because the people who voted for him will not be the RBG crowd, so he owes them no allegiance. Rudy's a politician first, not an idealogue.

This election will be about moderates. Can't be helped on this round. The Republicans have to develop a consersative bench at the governor level before they can contend. I like Haley Barbour, but he's not in. Someone needs to make a run at the Ca governorship in 2010, maybe that could be a jumping off point...

I understand your theory but you didn’t address my question - who is a genuine conservative that is running now.

the point this author fails to make is that Commander in Chief (President of the USA) sometimes has the option that he can support or reject legislation (not to mention federal funding/ judges) tha deal with these real social positions (that many Baptists are conservative on)! Rudy is a no deal. He’s like Diesel in a gasoline engine..

Hey Bruce, I understand your emotions. But if the Supreme Court adds 3 forty-something year-old RBGs, then Roe V Wade is permanent. CFR nevers gets another look. The 2nd amendment is pared down to hunting only. I would even vote for John McCain before letting a Dem win.

Man, I never thought I would be typing that.

>>>>>Rudy's a politician first, not an idealogue.

Rooty`s record shows he has been a liberal activist and a liberal politico and has championed liberal issues and liberal causes his entire political career. Rooty has no respect for the Constitution or the unborn. He believes in special rights for homos and promotes amnesty for illegals. Rooty`s record speaks for itself.

No thanks!

Agreed, and many don’t understand the nature of the fight (that liberals are the ones whom started the war on America’s traditional values, especially through the courts). Also many so called “fiscal conservatives” aren’t really..Fiscally conservative at all..sure they may have voted for tax-cuts ONCE, but they have not the record of support for SMALLER GOVT, and LESS REGUALTION, not to mentions BALANCED BUDGES!!

It’s all bull the “socially liberal-fiscally conservative line..well mostly”. Anyway I agree with you Real fiscal conservatives ARE also socially conservative naturally (becuase of personal responsibility and the fact that traditional values go along with financial responsibility!+ traditional America)!

Rudy Giuliani is not running for Pope or National Preacher. It seems that some conservatives don’t understand that.

Yep.. I think we even have a Rudy quote about how Ruth Bader would be a wonderful pick. He is lying about nominating constitutional judges. If he thought Ruthie was wonderful, he will think he can put up the sisters too.

How does it help that rudy doesn’t understand what a strict constructionist jurist (judge) really is?..?
