Standing ramrod straight in dress blues and crisp khakis, the seven color guard members lifted their rifles for one of the most solemn moments of any Memorial Day parade, the 21-gun salute. Hundreds who had gathered to witness the tribute watched in silence.
Just then, the eggs came flying. One glanced off a tree branch, and landed far away from the marchers in yesterday's Memorial Day Parade in Rockland, said Ryan Durfee , a former Marine who was marching in the color guard. Another crashed 8 feet in front of the color guard...
After the throwing , Durfee said he saw two teens run from their backyard into their house, and two police officers chase after them. Rockland police said last night that they arrested two 13-year-olds and charged them with disorderly conduct and assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony.
Rockland Police Chief John Llewellyn told FOX-25 TV that the culprits were a "couple of 13-year-olds that just wanted to cause some trouble and they picked the wrong time and the wrong group of people to do it to."
Durfee said the color guard completed its 21-gun salute despite the disturbance. But last night at the Rockland Veterans of Foreign Wars center , emotions were still raw, said Steven MacDonald , the post commander.
"It's very discouraging, especially on a day like today," MacDonald said. "We don't need somebody throwing eggs at us. That's crazy. It's unacceptable." MacDonald said several veterans are planning plan to show up at Hingham District Court today to demonstrate their disgust as the two teens are arraigned in the juvenile session.

Objects thrown some distance would probably be traveling about 50 mi/h or more. An egg in the eye would not be good.
I guess that means that we'll soon see their parents on the MSM wailing about the vicious police tactics of the Bush administration, attempt to silence legitimate political dissent concerning the illegal war in Iraq, yada yada yada, blah blah blah.

Possibly they had the same type of non-history class in school that a 21 year old quoted in a column of comments on Memorial Day had. She said that she didn’t know anyone in Iraq or Aphganistan and thus Memorial Day didn’t mean anything to her. DUH! I guess she’s been in the America-is-an-oppressor-nation type of social studies class so far. sad
I’m disappointed by this disrespectful display. How dare they?! They should be ashamed of themselves. Their parents should be held accountable. Unfortunately, this is not the only anti-USA demonstration I heard of that went on yesterday. It makes me sick to my stomach.
That wouldn’t surprise me a bit Mommy and daddy might even hire a couple hookers for the party.
Your idea got me to thinking. Being serious, I like the idea of them working at the local VA hospital, maybe all summer, while school is out.
The confusion between the two runs long and deep. I would bet that nine times out of ten, or more, when the media reports of a 21 gun salute, it’s really a 3 shot volley. I never knew one from the other until about a year ago when I found out here on FreeRepublic... and I’m 3 years older than you! So a little math would show that you found out 2 years before I did. :)
WOW.... never heard of libs “homeschooling”. Most of the exceedingly responsible parents known to homeschool were pretty conservative. How could a lib improve on their kids education outside publik skool?

Ah - but most of the conservatives up there bite their lip and avoid confrontation.
I got a few looks and grins that I was ‘fighting the good fight’ but no one else spoke up to support me (however nor did anyone step up to support the lib)
I guess my advice to you is if you ever encounter someone espousing conservative ideals, please back them up if you can. Strength in numbers and all that...
(I just noticed you’re from Maine - that’s different. Maine is full of what I call “New england rednecks” - people who appreciate the constitution, can survive in nature, love the land and their freedom. Libs seem to be the minority in Maine but I’ve only been there twice)
This has nothing to do with the subject of the story, but it should be noted that reporters are notorious for mistaking a "3 Shot Volley" for a "21 Gun Salute."
For that matter the color guard does not fire the salute at all, the firing party does.
At least they did at the gazillion funerals I participated in at Arlington.
In either case it is indefensible stupidity, but I'm hoping it is something these teens will grow out of.

It used to be that Libs were the minority up here..
But we have the rich nutnicks that move up here and treat the locals like crap.
