Rosie O'Donnell has fought her last fight at "The View." ABC said Friday she asked for, and received, an early exit from her contract at the daytime chatfest following her angry confrontation with co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck on Wednesday. She was due to leave in mid-June.

It ended a colorful eight-month tenure for O'Donnell that lifted the show's ratings but no doubt caused heartburn for show creator Barbara Walters. O'Donnell feuded with Donald Trump and frequently had snippy exchanges with the more conservative Hasselbeck.

O'Donnell said last month she would be leaving because she could not agree to a new contract with ABC executives.

"Rosie contributed to one of our most exciting and successful years at `The View,'" Walters said. "I am most appreciative. Our close and affectionate relationship will not change."

In a statement, O'Donnell said that "it's been an amazing year and I love all three women."

No one was feeling the love on Wednesday, when the argument with Hasselbeck began over O'Donnell's statement last week about the war: "655,000 Iraqi civilians have died. Who are the terrorists?"

Talk show critics accused O'Donnell of calling U.S. troops terrorists. She called Hasselbeck "cowardly" for not saying anything in response to the critics.

"Do not call me a coward, because No. 1, I sit here every single day, open my heart and tell people what I believe," Hasselbeck retorted, and their riveting exchange continued despite failed attempts by their co-hosts to cut to a commercial.

According to a New York Post report, O'Donnell's chief writer, Janette Barber, was allegedly led out of the building on Wednesday after she was caught drawing mustaches on photographs of Hasselbeck in "The View" studios. ABC executives didn't return repeated calls for questions on the incident Friday.

On Thursday O'Donnell had asked for a day off to celebrate her partner's birthday. "The View" aired a taped show on Friday.

On her Web site, O'Donnell posted a scrapbooklike video on Friday with pictures and news clippings of her tenure at "The View." Cyndi Lauper's "Sisters of Babylon" played in the background.

A day earlier, she posted messages on her Web site indicating she might not be back.

"When painting there is a point u must step away from the canvas as the work is done," she wrote. "Any more would take away."

Elizabeth certainly has developed. I watched her on “Survivor” but don’t remember this look.

And because there were people in the audience who actually cheered for her garbage - which is scary!

You want scary? Over on TMZ

65. I can see Rosie's point of view. She has hurt Elisabeth a few times with her point of view, but each time she reached out to Elisabeth to say how sorry she was. But when the tables are turned and Elisabeth does something that hurts Rosie, all Elisabeth does is say "big deal, defend yourself". Elisabeth seems very immature, self-centered, and very know-it-allish. I think after the disrespect from both of them today (this should have been aired privately), Elisabeth should be fired. Rosie is already leaving (probably sooner after today's nightmare) so she can't be fired. Elisabeth has shown time and time again that she can't see anyone else's point of view. Even today while Joy Behar was trying to read her list, Elisabeth wouldn't shut-up and was just trying to start a fight just for the sake of looking tough. She needs to grow-up and understand that sometimes it is a sign of toughness or strength or whatever you want to call it, to be respectful and not have a hissy over a difference of opinion.

When men do that it's called "sick. twisted, abusive" (although, from the rest of the post. it's possible the poster thinks the loud lesbian is called "Elisabeth")

What is this jerk, a twelve year old? She has the right boss at any rate.

What is unbelievable is that this mean-spirited and ungracious woman with absolutely nutty views was once sold to the general public as "The Queen of Nice", during the days of her daytime talk show. For an hour a day, she was free to sell her kinder, gentler brand of hatred, free from any criticism because she was so 'nice'.

Two days ago, on her self-reverential blog, Rosie posted John Edward’s drivel about the war on terror being nothing but a bumper-sticker slogan.

In yesterday’s Washington Post article about democratic strategist, Bob Shrum’s new book, when John Edwards was asked about gay rights he said: “I've never been comfortable around those people.”

Ms. O’Donnell’s not having a good week.

I don’t believe she’s a lightweight in intelligence....she’s got a very solid understanding of the issues and what she believes in. Her weakness is her lack of assertiveness, a lack of willingness to really push the issue...clearly something Rosie said pushed her over the edge.

I agree with some other Freepers, have Elizabeth be mentored by Ann Coulter, and the Dims would be in serious trouble. Yup...President Limbaugh, Vice President Coulter, Secretary of Defense North, Secretary of State Levin, what office would Elizabeth hold if she keeps developing a stiffer spine?

I sure wouldn't want to run into her on the sidewalk!

I don't blame you. She could do some serious damage to your car.

Everybody say hello to Rosie on the thread folks. I guarantee you she’s here lurking, or will be.

Hey, Rosie...do you still beat your wife?

Come on, answer YES or NO, like you insisted from Mrs. Hasselbeck.
