Patches of silica suggest water-based chemistry in ancient times

The strongest evidence yet that ancient Mars was much wetter than it is now has been unearthed by NASA's Spirit rover.

The Earth's water layer is so thin, compared to the rest of the bulk, it's actually a sort-of miracle that the ocean's waters haven't seeped into the earth aeons ago!
