Pelosi lays out criticism of immigration bill (Surrender No. 2)
The Hill ^ | May 21, 2007 | Jeremy Jacobs

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Sunday laid out her criticism of the immigration compromise introduced in the Senate, calling the temporary worker program “disruptive of families.”

“I have serious objection to the point system that is in the bill now,” the speaker said on ABC’s This Week. “Yes, we should deal with the backlog [of workers seeking citizenship]. I completely agree with that. But the family unification principles which had been fundamental to American immigration are disrupted by what is in there now.”

The point system Pelosi refers to would grant those seeking citizenship points based on English proficiency, work history, family status and passing a criminal background check.

“We're about families and family values,” Pelosi added. “And having people coming and going, taking their children out of school and being separated from them - we should try to fashion something that recognizes the reality of life.”

Pelosi’s concerns could have a significant impact on the success of the legislation as the House takes up the bill. Any significant tinkering with the legislation in the House could spell disaster for the fragile bipartisan coalition supporting the bill in the Senate.

Pelosi also addressed the conservative criticism that the bill amounts to amnesty for illegal immigrants.

“No one is for amnesty,” she said. “And there’s nothing in this bill that is about amnesty.”

taking their children out of school

I thought these illegals were just here to work. Nice that we get to educate their kids too...and let the states foot the bill for the federal government's failure to secure the border.

LIAR!

BTW, Nancy Pants on Fire, it’s the illegals and no one else who are responsible if their families are disrupted in any way.

Oh, >>whine<<< we can’t round them up; just give them amnesty.

As I said on another thread, we, supposedly, can’t round them up, but what happens if this bill is passed and only some of them “come out of the shadows”, pay the fine, register, etc.? The will hear about the remaining millions that we can’t round them up either. If this bill was not so infuriating it would be laughable.

She needs the illegals at the tuna factories so they can pay below minimum wage.

I agree. As for deporting them all, you don't have to. If you deport enough and make getting a job, a drivers license, an apartment, schooling, health care, etc. nearly impossible, the rest will go home on their own.

Yeah - you and who? For God’s sake, the courts managed to tie up Prop 187. You think you’re going to get laws passed - and enforced - evicting illegals and the like?

The only way to get rid of them would be through dictatorial means. Literally. I mean a “state of emergency”, courts suspended in certian cases, and all of the rest of it.

If you’re not prepared to resort to such measures (and I think that it’s fair to say that most people aren’t, desirable as they might be in some sense), then all of this whining makes no sense at all.

This is good news. The lefties in the House are going to water down the Senate version, which means the entire compromise will likely blow up once it goes back to the Senate.

That is an awesome idea! I know the courts have tried up all sorts of local initiatives to restrict services to illegals. Given that we are literal under attack, as wave after wave of illegals assaults the boarder, I don't think it is beyond the realm of possibility for a state of emergency to be declared.

I fear at this rate we may end up with another Mexican-American war.

I mean a “state of emergency"

Sounds right to me. That's what it is.

Do you really think an ethnically Mexican country will be the Light of the World, as America has been, or just....Alta Mexico?

Isn't that kind of an emergency for civilization in general?

Or are you convinced that Spaniard values coupled with the people of Mexico will do just as good a job over the next century or three as we did?

I’m not convinced at all. Nor, for that matter, am I in any way, shape, or form in favour of illegal aliens. Though I do think that the Points System and the end to family migration - if the rest of the package was actually enforced as described - would be a good thing.

But, let’s be very clear here: simply whining about the President does and contibutes absolutely nothing. And I’ve seen nothing to convince me that 90% or more of the people who are complaning have any idea of what could be done, or any practical alternative, beyond, “I hate illegals.”

Well, that’s all well and good - we all hate illegals. But until and unless you’ve got a plan to actually do something about it, ranthing about the perifidy of “Jorge” Bush does no one any good in the least.

I think - if this bill were enforced (that is to say, were the Z permits to work as described and were the border to be actually closed), it would be workable. I am, however, extremely doubtful if it will br properly enforced.

.
.

So, the choice is this - either work with the President and others along these lines, accepting some kind of compromise to do with the others already here, and moving towards the absolute closure of the Southern border...

Or start advocating that the President declare Martial Law. Because that’s the only way you’ll ever be able to adopt any serious measure against the illegals.

“We're about families and family values,” Pelosi added.

She can't open her mouth without lying. Did San Fran Nan actually say "we're about families and family values"? I bet the majority of her constituents didn't know that. Isn't she a pro-abort, pro-gay Democrat? Somebody is very confused!

>And I’ve seen nothing to convince me that 90% or more of the people who are complaning have any idea of what could be done, or any practical alternative, beyond, “I hate illegals.”< If you had been with FR back in 2001, 2, 3, & 4, you would have been able to participate in the week long debates we used to have. The whining about the President is well deserved. Open your eyes and see where the blame lies, squarely in the lap of a REPUBLICAN president who is coaxing the dizzy democrats to help him get the Bill to his desk so he can sign it.
