A Disaster: The GOP Caves On Border Security
HughHewitt.com ^ | 5/16/07 | Hugh Hewitt

Posted on 05/16/2007 4:14:04 PM PDT by pissant

Word is leaking that the GOP in the Senate are on the verge of agreeing to an immigration bill that has --as a concession to the GOP-- less than half of the fencing promised by law last year.

White flag time on the border, and a national security and thus a political disaster.

The GOP are sending around talking points attempting to make this "compromise" defensible, but it won't and shouldn't fly. Agreeing to it takes the party down the tubes on the issue of border security --because it doesn't provide what the public understands to be border security, a very long, very high fence with a very wide gate.

This is McCain's continuing gift to the GOP, and the immigration absolutists' legacy: Lots and lots of promises and no fence worth calling a fence.

Aren't there 41 GOP senators willing to fight for border security? Apparently not. And they will see the result in their depleted coffers and diminished numbers come November '08. All they have to do is fight for border security, but they won't even do that.

UPDATE: Here are the draft talking points from the GOP. Four pages of crap:

BORDER SECURITY AND IMMIGRATION REFORM

Republicans Standing Together to Fight for Tougher Enforcement and an Immigration System That Better Serves American Interests

As negotiations continue, Republicans are demanding the following from the Democrat majority:

* Beefed-up border security. Republicans are insisting on dramatic and immediate improvements to border security, including 18,000 Border Patrol agents and 370 miles of fencing, as part of a continuous effort to protect the borders.

*Republicans insist that border security improvements must be completed before other reforms can occur. Democrats blocked any "triggers" in last year’s bill.

Republicans will lose their shorts next year if they do this.

Our country will lose our collective shorts if Congress grants amnesty to the 20 - 30 million illegals!!!

The GOP can cry and wail, come next election day. We now have a NO VOTE button. The GOP gets it.

That's why they're pushing this travesty now, so it'll all be forgotten by 2008 and we'll come crawling back as if nothing happened.

Pony up some slanted polls, plant them in the MSM, it works.

Voting on Election Day works better.

Polls are of no significance, actual votes are.

If Republicans had not fought for these limits, Democrats would have passed an automatic amnesty bill without any of the restrictions that Republicans have now guaranteed.

Not even they can believe that. All last year the democrats obstructed and blocked almost everything the GOP tried to pass on this issue now they act as if they can't do the same. Amnesty is going through because the GOP wants it to.

I have never seen a party with all the potential
to dominate the political landscape for generations..
go down the tubes, with such inane and insane actions
in the past 5 years. It is discouraging and damn
idiotic and the blame is with the National leaders. JK

“Polls are of no significance, actual votes are.”

Polls sure do drive politicians’ minds.

“Voting on Election Day works better.”

Does, but people forget.

Therefore, the politicians’ concern that this bill be handled this year “before” an election year.

Bush’s fault.

And the corrupting money.

What was it last year? 31 Repubs and the Pres voted with the Dems to push that monstrosity through the senate?

Yeah, the republicans want it all right. They've fought hard for it.

The RNC called a few days ago begging for money. They wanted $250... $150... $75... $25...

I told him I'd write a check to the RNC for $1,000 the day that:

- Federal immigration laws were enforced.
- Illegals were deported
- 2,000 mile fence was completed

The RNC idiot said, "we don't have enough troops to enforce the law."

I told him to see what President Dwight David Eisenhower did in 1954.

How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico

http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0706/p09s01-coop.htm

I'm fed up with limp-wristed so called "conservatives" and a President who say they "believe in the rulle of law," and that "we need to fight terrorism at home."

With the open door policy we have, we will see more and more 9-11s. And more gangs...

Yeah, the republicans want it all right. They've fought hard for it.

Just wait and see what comes out of conference once dems in the House ram through their bill in July. Even the modest new enforcements in the Senate bill will be taken out. It'll be the greatest victory Kennedy and the open borders crowd ever had.

Well, we will need an alternative to the liberal DemoThugs. In reality, Washington needs a good cleaning out. The people have to demand changes through their votes and work with their elected ones. People have taken the Washington government for grantid FAR TOO LONG and look at what has happened. It is time for change, major conservative change and a restoration of America to its original core values -— and out the door for all socialists.

I agree. Duncan Hunter Bump.

How is it that we see this level of sentiment so much on FR, and even in places like liberal California (where Prop 187 was passed) but the immigration issue still continues to be disregarded by our representatives? I smell a voter backlash coming, on the same order as what happened with Proposition 13 in California. But by the same token I feel that the backlash might not happen until after the presidential election. When Buchanan was making lots of noise about immigration several years ago, Congress passed some kind of restriction but it was obvious then as it is now that it was a palliative meant to get them past the next election.

I agree 100%. However, the current batch of prospective leaders of the repub party is less than pathetic. Bush has destroyed any remaining semblance of the republican party. As I have said before — GW will go down as the worse POTUS in the history of the USA. He has single handedly destroyed our future.

I know what you mean. They (Rove) hope we forget OR the Democratic choice is so bad, we have to vote. Personally, I loose either way. America is GONE. There will be a place with the name USA, but it will be a third world dump, social welfare state with no hope of recovery. Clinto, Ted Kennedy, Martinez, Bush, JJ and Fat Al will all be on the currency -0 worth -0- BTW.

I do not know the name of the dude, wrote a book in 1770. He stated that after 200 years a Democracy reverts to a Dictatorship - usually after the people realize they can vote the money out of the Treasury.

As I see it, the Political Parties pander to the electorate via the Treasury, and think they know more than the electorate. Soon we will have a President who thinks s/he knows more than the Political Party and that is the end.

Initially I was going to take exception to that statement, but I really cannot — with a couple of exceptions it stands on its own. He has really done ONE thing for this country that really counts. He, with our help, saved the SCOTUS, at least for the time being. That is his legacy.
