I support the sales tax idea instead of a property tax. Everyone should pay for the libraries, schools etc. they use and not just the property owners.
I especially like the sales tax approach because we are so dependent on non-residents and it’s one way to spread the cost of government around.
Truth is, I would much rather see government go back to doing only the things it was originally intended to do and stop expecting us to pay for every wild hair it gets!
I support the idea that only those that use the schools, libraries, and such should pay for them. Empty nesters need not be paying for other people's kids to go to school. Put a fee on library cards instead of gouging the homeowners.
Problem is, neither party really cares about controlling spending. You have to do that before you have real tax reform.
Here in NH, we have no sales or income tax but the majority of funds comes from the backs of homeowners paying outrageous property taxes (I’m paying over 5K a year).
If you want to see where it would lead if they passed a broad-based income/sales tax, look at Maine. Highest local/state tax burden in the nation.
