During the Vietnam war this kind of stuff was pretty common.
I have a friend who received a Dear John email 12 hours into a deployment in the 90’s. She had started packing up the house the minute his plane left the ground and she wiped the fake tears from her eyes.
When I was stationed at Beale AFB we spent most of our time TDY chasing after the SR-71. One of the guys in my squadron re-enlisted spent his bonus on furniture, came home and their base house was empty except for his stuff in a big pile in the master bedroom. Happened more than once when I was there and that was in the 80s.
