Can Fred Thompson Fill the GOP's Vacuum?
Real Clear Politics ^ | May 9, 2007

There's a vacuum in the GOP, we keep hearing, and Republicans aren't quite satisfied with their presidential choices.

Apparently, neither a veteran senator-war hero, nor a Harvard MBA/JD corporate governor, nor even a law-and-order, 9/11 mayor is quite good enough for the Red Staters. There's just something missing.

And what, one wonders, might that be? Exactly what je ne sais quoi would fill the alleged GOP void?

Just Fred.

Thompson that is. The actor who doesn't act, Thompson is tall and big; he talks straight, drives a truck and is wunna-us. A bootstrap American with take-it-or-leave-it charisma, he's got smarts and the kind of steely gaze you'd like to see aimed at al-Qaeda.

His resume otherwise has all the right bullet points: lawyer, chief minority counsel for the Senate Watergate Committee, a U.S. senator who ran hearings on campaign finance controversies while chair of the Senate Government Affairs Committee from 1997-2001.

Like Ronald Reagan's, Thompson's acting career has featured strong manly roles -- a CIA director, senator, FBI agent, chief of staff and rear admiral -- as well as head prosecutor on ``Law and Order.'' When Thompson spoke recently to the Orange County (Calif.) Lincoln Club's annual dinner, he approached the podium to the L&O soundtrack.

In his speech, he came across as sincere, honest and straightforward -- all the traits Americans crave in a candidate -- and he talked folksy:

``Even if we won't be going around in the woods trying to find any bears to kill, sometimes the bear visits whether you're looking for him or not,'' he said.

What's not to love about Thompson? Apparently, nothing, which may explain why the former Tennessee senator is polling in the...

Oh, please. Look if Romney gets the nomination, I'll vote for him, but I won't be happy about it -- NOT because he's like the super-successful high school guy I envy, but because he's BETRAYED in very fundamental ways principles that I think ALL Republicans should embrace because they're the only things that will keep us a prosperous nation of responsible, free individuals.

--Government-mandated health insurance "without raising taxes!" *rolls eyes*

--His office endorsing "Gay Youth Pride Day," for teenagers! The "gay" part is bad enough, but even THINKING that the governor's office has any role at all in the declared sexual orientation of minors, is something more than audacious. It's a betrayal.

--A quote I can produce for you if you want, where he basically says that working with environmentalists doesn't have to mean hurting economic growth or businesses. It's not just that what he said is pure manure, it's that self-serving platitudes like that doozy help environmentalists do more harm! Republicans need to fight back with truth, not acquiesque to environmentalist power grabs by pretending it's progress.

No, the reason I don't trust Romney is because of thing's he's DONE -- not what I think he'll do. Your "envy" angle is more to shield your own inadequacies of argument in Romney's favor, his success at reducing budgets notwithstanding.

“If Hunter could fill the void, it would already be filled.”

His problem is his record as a big spender. I, for one, DO NOT want another big spender leading us. I do like him for Secretary of Defense though.

Wasn’t it in one of your posts that Fred’s acting job was mentioned? I was addressing that.

Duncan Hunter had a law practice in San Diego prior to seving in the Congress. He also served as an Army Ranger in the Vietnam war.

LOL. I’d never heard of a Dyson. Apparently they suck the best, huh? I’m partial to the 8lb Oreck upright.

They do. I have a Dyson and I will never buy another brand of Vacuum cleaner. You can't argue with good design and nothing else comes close.

Well, my wife is the one who vacuums. So I’ll pass that on.

They truly are unbelievable. You can take a room that has been freshly vacuumed by another brand, and it will still fill most of the canister. Even people who are obsessive about vacuuming because of allergies say that the amount of gunk a Dyson gets out is amazing.

“I come to Thompson threads to convert folks to DH fans.”

Some of us Thompson fans already considered DH and were forced to look elsewhere due to his record as a big spender. I want a leader who will steer a course AWAY from big government conservatism back toward Goldwater/Reagan limited government conservatism. In short, I am looking for a “FREDERALIST” candidate. (Ron Paul is even stronger on this issue that FDT, but he is a little naive in the area of foreign policy)

With all the free air time given to Fred Thompson(again tonight on FOX!) and on radio, it is amazing that people even know there are other candidates, thanks to the black out on them by the MSM. If this isn’t blatant media manipulation, I don’t know what it is. This, alone, is enough to put a person off on Fred. If they were ignoring your candidate, how would you feel? Be honest, now.

You have an amazing entitlement mentality.

Thompson has JOBS and is clever enough to make them ones that get him closer to his goal.

Completely admirable.

Hunter a big spender? I see you’ve bought into some myths. There is only two areas that Hunter wants to increase spending on and has consistently voted to do so. Border security and the Military. No one is more qualified to be CIC than this wise man.

“The Republican field of fine candidates is in no way suffering from a vacuum.”

I disagree. The only serious limited government proponent in the race now is Ron Paul and he is a little to naive on foreign policy. Fred is the only one who brings the “total package”.

They do. I have a Dyson and I will never buy another brand of Vacuum cleaner.

Psst! (whisper this as an aside since it's off topic and may upset FOFs*) Dysons don't use vacuum technology, but cyclonic.

I have one. Definitely worth the big bucks.

You and PoMom, I can understand. But Spiff walking around in his Mrs. Cleaver apron vacuuming is too much to bear.

You Fred-heads are always calling Rep. Hunter a big spender, but you never answer when asked what he spent so recklessly upon.
If you call the border fence in San Diego, and the military build up he did after Clinton diminished our armed forces and equipment, I would NOT say that is reckless spending, would you? After all, that is what government is meant to do - defend the country.
What else can you list, please?

No, that is not a myth and there are a LOT of areas in which he voted to increase spending. His is not a record I can support. From the Club for Growth:

YES on No Child Left Behind YES on Sarbanes-Oxley YES on the 2003 Medicare Drug Benefit YES on 2005 Highway Bill Hunter also went 0 for 19 on the Flake anti-pork amendments.

Despite being a member of the Republican Study Committee, Hunter frequently votes NO on their fiscally conservative annual budgets (2006, 2005, 2003...)

49% on the 2005 Club for Growth scorecard. That places him 187th within the House GOP conference, out of roughly 230 members.

National Taxpayers Union shows a more telling trend. He was strong in the early 1990s, getting “B’s” and one “A”, but as time went by, like most politicians, his score dropped. For the past few years, he’s been getting “C’s”.

...

And as bad as things are on the budget front, they’re about to get a whole lot worse because of a pending nightmare that Duncan Hunter — supposed tough guy, supposed truth-teller, supposed fiscal conservative — has chosen to ignore.

... the single worst problem facing this country in coming years, with the possible exception of nuclear terrorism, is dealing with the massive fiscal impact of baby boomers retiring. As we slowly transition from a nation where there are 4 working adults for every adult getting Social Security and Medicare to a nation where that ratio is 2 to 1, we will face an incredible fiscal squeeze.

As a veteran member of Congress, Duncan Hunter knows this. He’s heard the warnings, seen the bipartisan studies. So what did this self-declared fiscal conservative do in 2003? He voted to make the problem much, much, much worse by extending prescription drug benefits to seniors, three-quarters of whom already have coverage. The money that was saved by all the triumphant stands he claims to have taken is infinitesimal compared to the staggering long-term national debt he helped add with this one vote, which was tantamount to civic arson.

See my answer to pissant. BTW, this is an answer that I have given on numerous occasions.
