Fred Thompson, the former Republican senator from Tennessee who plays a prosecutor on televisions Law and Order and is watching his own popularity grow from his seat on the sidelines of a presidential campaign that he hasnt even joined yet, is making it clear what he makes of Democrats in the great Iraq war debate.
As far as the Democrats, they are adhering to the extent they can to the most left wing element of their base, Thompson said in an interview shown on the Fox News Channels Hannity and Colmes last night. You know, Moveon.org and those folks are running the Democratic party.
And they're taking extremist positions and doing extremist things, Thompson said. (Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid is doing things that I think the American people are going to reject. They're as near to investing in defeat of their own country than anything I've ever seen, and I don't think the American people will forgive them for that. So, they're going through that exercise, and let's just let them go, let's just give them a little rope and see what they do.
And he had this to say about the Republican Partys own labeling of the defeatist Democrats in Congress: Our name-calling and harping on them right now is kind of wasted effort as far as I'm concerned.
Thompson says he will take his time in deciding whether to seek the Republican nomination for president, with polls showing that his name-recognition could provide him with an instant entrée to the race.

Actually I believe I made a slight error in calculating their birthdays. There isn’t even two years difference in age.
Fred Dalton Thompson Aug. 19, 1942
Rudy Giuliani May 28, 1944
I see it in his face. I spoke to two nurses last night to get their opinion and they said he does not look well at all. But Like I said his mind is sharp as a tack and he has a great sense of humor.
Right now he is getting paid as a commentator. If he declares, he has to give up that job.
Right now he can effectively get paid to make his opinions known.
If he declares, he will have to spend millions of dollars to buy airtime for campaign ads.
He will also have to spend a large part of his time raising campaign funds.
He will also lose the money he currently makes as reruns of Law and Order that he is in are shown, because those will have to be taken off the air until the election is over. There are likely contractual issues involved in that as well, and he would likely also be preventing some of his friends and coworkers from that show from making money off of the reruns.
There are a lot of good reasons for Fred to wait as long as he can before declaring.
Then he better have an aces-up VP choice!
I’m a nurse. I think he looks fine....
It is the main reason for the downward spiral into the abyss of "all politics all of the time!!"
I don’t think he’s even thinking about that yet. He hasn’t even said “Yes I’m running” yet. Thinking about VP picks is kinda jumping the gun and saying I won the primary. Fred is not like that. He’s taking it one step at a time.
Okay then - I’ll take your word for it!
He has two children under the age of five. That could explain it!
Not really much doubt in my mind. I think he will declare in June, once sweeps are over.
But hes not going to be campaigning on the trail like most politicians - hes doing an internet thing that his wife and campaign is putting together.
I dont think this will work. He is going to have to get out there and press the flesh like everyone else.
True that would wear out anyone. LOL! I believe they are 3 and 1/1/2 yrs old!
I’m not an American so I can’t vote, and don’t have a dog in this fight, as the expression goes. I saw him on O’Reilly today for the first time in a very long time. I wanted to be impressed, but he seemed nervous, spoke too fast and too much, did not express himself all that clearly, and did not look real healthy. If he is the guy that runs for the Republicans he will have to do much better than that to win over swing voters.
Oh, he also said his health was more important than any campaign. That is not what voters want to hear. Especially not in wartime. They want to hear that the candidate believes with all his heart he is the best man in the country for the job - the only one that can really do it well, and that he will sacrifice himself to get it and do it as best he can. It could also be spun to imply his health is not good. That was a very bad slip and if he is prone to those he will get chewed up over them.
I hope he waits until 2008 to declare, show the ego-centric “front runners” how it is supposed to be done.
What name calling? We call them what they are and ths name calling? Damn this truly has become a party of limisted pussys afraid to stand up for what it believes! Afrato fight back!
Yes, that’s the image of “old” and “tired”, for sure. LOL!
Go Fred!
He’s running - he used the exact words “this campaign” at least twice during the interview, referring to himself. He needs to wait until the run of “Law and Order” ends sometime this month, so as not to stir up those pesky equal-time rules.
Fred was on O’Reilly??
People have forgot that both Rudy and McCain both ran for many months before declaring officially? Thompson has avoided millions for staff. Right now his campaign fits in his hat band but is prospering nonetheless. I hope he retains something of this freebooting style. Lincoln moved around from debate to debate in the passenger car while Douglas had his private one. Fred should do something like this to keep it simple but of course without the pretense of Jimmy Carter.
Don’t take my word area51, take Fred’s. And his doctor’s.
Unless you think they aren’t being honest with the American people...
