SYDNEY (AFP) - A young Australian diplomat was mauled by lions at a wildlife park in Zimbabwe but survived because her boyfriend scared the animals away, a report said Sunday.

Gemma Huggins, 27, was visiting the Lion and Cheetah park outside Harare when a lion grabbed her by the head and shook her, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

The diplomat, who had arrived in Zimbabwe on her first foreign posting a month earlier, was lucky to survive after the lion's teeth came within millimetres of her jugular vein, it said.

The paper said she was attacked by more than one animal.

Huggins was treated for severe injuries to her head, neck, torso and legs and had several skin grafts at the Unitas Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, it added.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that a diplomat from the High Commission (embassy) in Harare had been hospitalised after an unspecified incident at a wildlife park.

I’m still trying to figure out how the lion got hold of her. I have seen people act like idiots and think that actual wild animals are like Disney characters......

I saw a guy get bitten by a cub in a SA game park. Lions are lions, they don’t really change because they’re raised in captivity.

Well there are those times ( of the month) when women just shouldn’t hang out with large carnivores.

The lions must be as hungry as the people of Zimbabwe after Mugabe’s brutality and mismanagement.

It sounds like it was one of those animal parks where they drug the animals every day so people can ride around with them in their cars. Sounds like the cats didnt’ have their medicine that day...

I love lions so much, this is such sad news. I pray for a quick recovery for this woman, but so often humans do something stupid and animals revert back to their default settings.

I know this is unrelated, and perhaps she did nothing to provoke the lions, but I'm dealing from a mindset that is so sick of hearing stories about mountain lions attacking hikers while hiking in THEIR territory.

No doubt! I wonder if anyone over there actually would take the risk and trouble of shooting him?

I wnet to the Great Smokies on my motorcycle and while tolig around the mountain cam upon peopl stopping to allow bears to come up to their cars. They were taking pictures and throwing food out to the bears.

I can tell you it isnt any fun to sit about 300 feet from bears leaning on cars when you are on a motorcycle. I got turned around and hauled it back down the mountain to a rest area until the bears had left.

Oh, yes, humans don't have a right to be in any place but the middle of a city./SAR. Humans have as much right to hike in the woods as any other of God's creatures. Mountain lions are attacking aggressively now because it is their nature to do that when they are not afraid of their prey. Mountain lions also attack people in cities(CA has had several attacks over the years by Mountain lions in heavily HUMAN populated areas). Sorry to burst your bubble but lions don't have a "territory". We never did sign a treaty with them and humans have lived in the US, in the wild, since before Mountain lions were here, the largest cat like predator at that time were sabre tooth tigers.

Your statements are nonsensical and show that you value animals far above humans, a true liberal when it comes to "animal rights".
