WASHINGTON, April 28 (UPI) -- An Interior Department plan would open ocean waters off Virginia to drilling for oil and gas, The Washington Post reported.
The proposal, to be announced Monday, would also allow new exploration in Bristol Bay in Alaska and in the Gulf of Mexico.
Congress imposed a moratorium, renewed every year, on drilling in the Atlantic and Pacific, after a major oil spill off Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1982. A vote would be required for any drilling off Virginia.
Environmentalists say drilling might pollute Assateague Island and Chesapeake Bay. Virginia's barrier islands have been designated a U.N. World Biosphere Reserve and a National Natural Landmark.
"This is one of the few places on the East Coast that just never got developed," said Richard Ayers of Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper. "A disturbance of any magnitude would be something the place hasn't seen since the '30s."
Drilling in Bristol Bay north of the Aleutian Islands could begin without congressional approval.
I'll qualify for a one time $10 Golden Age Pass this year.
Please, enough with the hyperbole about Assateague, and in no way is it a new word.
I am all for finding new sources of energy resources, and would probably not oppose such efforts off Assateague (not enough information yet to make that determination) however, I can and do understand that are going to be concerns from the people who live near Assateague.......and I'm one of them.
In the past we couldn’t justify the cost of the seafood festival ($35 per person) but last year we won a ticket as a door prize and so forked over the other $35 so we both could go. We had so much fun, and ate so much food, that we realized the cost is very well justified :)
I don’t know if it will go up this year, but we’ve been paying an annual fee of $15 for access to Assateague, and I think that’s a bargain. I would still think it a bargain at double that.
It’s in Alaska..and I don’t know why, except for
Democrats, this never gets off the ground./..it
makes sense to me? but there is something missing
when they deny that this “pristine” area is off-limits.
Hell, it’s close to Russia and other eastern areas and
the oil is all over these areas..why? No Alaskadrilling?????????????? JK
I hope you’re just kidding, because Assateague is in Virginia and Maryland, not Alaska.
Nope.
I phrased it wrong..should be: OK in Virginie, but
why the procrastination and ignoring of the Alaska
area for drilling....JK
See latest post...JK
Thanks for providing the map!!!!
I’m extremely familiar with the area, having spent 21 years in Delaware and now living less than 20 miles west of the Virginia portion of Assateague :)
But the proposal would also allow new exploration in Bristol Bay of Alaska.
Now I understand what you were saying........and realize the “JK” is your signature, not shorthand for “just kidding.” So I’m equally at fault for for misunderstanding!
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!!!
Virginians, please, please, please, oh please support this. (I would.)
Please see my post #22.
DRILL in Bristol Bay! DRILL in the Gulf of Mexico! And DRILL off Virginia before Cuba gets it all, for Heaven’s sake!
I think I have mix’d feelings about all of it, but anything that will drive the environmentalists crazy is good.
Though, to be honest I hope any development won’t bring in thousands more urbanites(furreigners, as well call ‘em) here to “get away from it all”, when, in fact, they just bring whatever ****hole of a city they just came from with them.
When we form the State of Delmarva, we must needs have some kind of regulations to keep those people out.
What more can I say? You’ve said it all, and there is nothing you said that I disagree with in the least.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please don't pump gas on May 15th In April 1997, there was a gas out conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight. On May 15th 2007, all internet users are being asked to NOT go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in a lot of places. There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up. If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (thats almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day. If you agree (which I cant see why you wouldnt) resend this to all your contact list. With it saying, Dont pump gas on May 15th If you need gas, get it the day before or the day after! Remember Friends: Dont Pump Gas on May 15th Lets stand together on this NO GAS...On May 15th 2007
