A fairer solution would be to treat the owner of a pit bull, in law, as if he personally committed any violent act the pit bull committed.
That is, if a pit bull mauls your infant son to death, you are convicted for the second degree murder of your infant son.
Of course, the ACLU would have a field day with that one, so the only practical thing to do is dispose of the breed.
The problem with this is that it's hard to convict if there isn't criminal intent. It would be hard to argue that merely owning a pit bull constitutes criminal intent unless the breed was illegal to own.
I think a good solution would be to require that all pit bulls be neutered before transfer or sale & outlaw commercial breeding of the dog. The breed would disappear naturally.

Those parents did not kill their child.
They may be negligent and certainly responsible, but they are not murderers.
