I lived in Kennesaw for years, being from Marietta.

The law requiring handguns in the home was passed around 1984-85, and was done in response to Morton Grove, IL passing a law making private handgun ownership illegal. In the 80s, Kennesaw was a generally small town, but it is busting at the seams now with growth.

And the mandatory gun ordinance is by now pretty much a hollow formality. There was always an exemption for people who declared a religious, moral or ethical exemption to owning arms, and I'm not aware of anyone ever bring punished for not having a gun.
