I read one post that said a bunch of evos were leaving FR and the guy pointed out that very few people noticed because they spent so much time on those threads and nowhere else that they didn’t contribute much to the conservative cause.

My impression is that most of those people are Libertarian, which as you know is not the same thing as Conservative. They see themselves (I gather) as the "children of the Enlightenment"; many are very liberal on social issues (gay rights, abortion, infanticide, "death with dignity," etc., etc.).

And of course, a big part of the conventional Enlightenment schtick is the denigration of God and religious experience as illusionary. They prefer the model of a "clockwork universe" that has no need of God. When you suggest to these people that the federal Constitution has roots in Judeo-Christianity, they absolutely, vociferously deny it.

Still, I miss a whole lot of those people: They were great fun to argue with.

Thank you so much, Kevmo, for plugging our book! In all likelihood, it would not have been possible to write it without the "source material" that our dear departed Evo friends unstintingly provided on a daily basis when they were still here....

So very true. The personality of a main character in the dialogue was a cross-section of our correspondents' personalities. I suspect many of them would have seen that along with some of their best arguments.

Still, I miss a whole lot of those people: They were great fun to argue with.

Sigh, me too.

M: ...An argument isn't just contradiction.

A: It can be.

M: No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.

A: No it isn't.

M: Yes it is! It's not just contradiction.

A: Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.

M: Yes, but that's not just saying 'No it isn't.'

A: Yes it is!

M: No it isn't! ...

"do you disagree with 17,824? do you think we are going to bludgeon voters into agreeing with our conservative principles? how do you propose to start the discussion with the moderate voters?"

Of course it takes a lot of patience (though I don't always have it but admire those who do), knowledge and persistence to win over such voters. Nastiness is not a winning strategy. That is a no brainer.

There are times however, when firmness, strength and the passion of one convictions, however, do work. Such tactics, appropriately used, yield clarity and a sense of purpose.

I have to laugh though, when people, particularly in debates opposing conservatives (and I do not mean you), get all self righteous and make the point you made and yet are as nasty as they accuse conservatives of being. At least the conservatives are honest in admitting their meanspiritedness is a tactic they use strategically.

Some of the meanest posters on this and other boards hate Ann Coulter because they believe she is mean, and gives conservatives a bad name, when daily, month after month, year after year, they post comments which are far nastier than anything Ann has ever said or done.

I don’t do so well with potted plants. But if I plant it in the yard, it grows. I transplanted a weed I found growing up the side of the house. It’s now a beautiful shade tree in the front yard. I don’t know what it is. I call it the lady bug tree, because they gather in its bark in late Fall. Sometimes they completely cover the trunk.

I only feed the wildlife during bad weather, when it’s difficult for them to find food. We have enough fruit and nuts to keep them happy the rest of the time. I don’t mind them eating the blackberries, plums, walnuts, blueberries, etc. That’s what I have them for. I can buy better ones for us from the farmer down the road. And I grow enough stuff, they usually leave some for us.

Thank you for the prayers. They’ve been very helpful.

Had to be it: "Owls in the Family," by Farley Mowat. This is not about Archie and Meathead. It is about Wol the Owl and Weeps the other owl. You can remember the name Wol the Owl because the letters in 0-w-l can spell W-o-l. Here is a very fine review:

"If you're new to the writings of Farley Mowat, this book is a great place to start. You will love it. If you have kids, THEY will love it. Wol and Weeps, the two feathered protagonists, are two of the most lovable pets you'll ever read about in print. Wol especially steals the show when it comes to dealing with crows, dogs, skunks, and a really mean French teacher called Fifi."

By now, Fifi has probably had her FR account suspended and has moved to the other side of the tracks.
