As for Johnnie-boy, am I the only one in the world that doesn’t think his hair merits a second look? I could do as good a job as the $400 campaign contribution cuts...30 years ago I got a book from the public library that apparently has saved me approximately $144,000 for just one person: How To Cut Your Own Or Anybody Else’s Hair.
I used it alot more than another paperback that I borrowed a few years later: How To Deliver Your Own Baby. ;-)

After seeing the photos of his new house, I’m having trouble getting worked up about a puny $400 haircut.
To be fair, I wouldn’t expect him — or George Bush — to know how much his haircuts cost. When you’re campaigning for major political office, or already in one, or a senior executive of a big corporation who has to be flying around the world on business constantly, you have somebody arrange to get you a haircut appointment and that somebody pays with a campaign/company credit card and gets the receipt to a secretary, and eventually a junior accountant notes the expense in the books. It would be nice if Edwards’ “somebodys” were the sort who’d find a different barber next time if the first one charged $400, but Edwards himself probably learned the cost of his haircut from the media.

To be fair, though, your barber would probably charge at least 5 times that to give a haircut on a house call basis, maybe more. Because with the time it takes to gather up all the necessary materials, and travel to and from the client’s location, he could have done at least 5 haircuts in his shop.

Lots of pretty ordinary business people, like travelling salesmen, bill just about all expenses incurred while they’re travelling to a company expense account (whether they’re self-employed or work for somebody else), and those expenses are tax-deductible. Many things that would ordinarily be personal expenses need to be done while travelling, and cost a whole lot more when done while travelling, especially since it doesn’t usually make sense to spend time on a business trip trekking around a strange city finding barbers and laundromats. Ordinary people would get this done at a hotel’s salon (and have their laundry done through the hotel’s service), not have someone brought in especially to serve them, but I can see where it’s not too practical for either the hotel or the candidate to have a major Presidential candidate sitting in the chair at the hair salon just off the lobby, with security guys hovering, media and autograph seekers swarming, etc. $400 sounds pretty excessive to me, but $200 would really be quite reasonable under the circumstances. It makes sense to use a barber/stylist who is accustomed to dealing with celebrities and their security and confidentiality needs, and the normal prices of those stylists are quite high. Accepting the service free or at a significant discount to what the same stylist would normally get for a house call would really have to be reported as a campaign donation, and the stylist might not necessarily want to be turning up on databases of Edwards campaign donors (who knows where his other clients’ political loyalties may lie).
I happen to think Edwards is an arrogant dishonest sleazebag, who made his millions through phony malpractice suits that put good ob/gyns and other doctors out of business and drove up everybody’s healthcare costs by driving up the price of malpractice insurance. But I strongly suspect that a lot of very good, honest Presidential candidates and Presidents have paid this sort of price for haircuts, and think we should be careful about making a big deal out of Edwards doing it.

Edwards should change his campaign theme from ‘ I am one of the little people’ to something else. At a minimum, he makes himself an easy target for Hillary, Obama, etc.
I doubt that Edwards will make it past the first round.
Second, many of us have done lots of business traveling. Haircuts ( even at a normal price ) would likely not be approved.
Mine are $15 and they’re always good. My hair would be down to my bum if I had to pay $200 for it. LOL.
Expense policies depend on a company’s policies, and vary widely, of course. I know my company has no problem with expensing restaurant meals, laundry, haircuts, etc. at reasonable prices. My boss expensed a new shirt when his flight was cancelled, forcing him to stay overnight on what was supposed to be just a day trip, and making it impossible for him to go home from the airport the next day, before getting to the office for a client meeting.
Personally, I hope Edwards keeps right on with his “I am one of the little people” theme. It’s just too rich, coming from a guy who’s having the finishing touches put on his new 28,000 square foot house. So far, he and his campaign are coming across as custom-crafted by Republican operatives.

Well, Edwards is too good for a “Hoi Poloi” haircut.
As for me and my sons, we have a Oester electric buzz-cutting machine. It’s a step or two down from the Ronco Mohawkmaster, but we prefer the 50’s buzz cut to the 80’s mohawk. Half-inch on the top, quarter inch on the sides, tapered from the neck to the ear lobes.
When I’m too busy to give the boys a haircut, my wife does it. It doesn’t always come out even, but it always grows back.
I always buzz what’s left of my hair before hopping in the shower so I don’t feel itchy around the neck and shoulders all day.
