I thought that our society ‘collectively’ (always disliked that term) has determined that THAT no longer matters, thanks to the Clinton Vaccine.
You may have gotten that from my post. It was nine days in command.
Since he couldn't have run his ship into anything I'm guessing affair with a subordinate or sexual harassment.
From the Seattle paper:
Rankin is the latest in a long line of Navy skippers to be fired in recent years. Commanders can be relieved for a variety of reasons, such as breaking the wartime rules of engagement or failing to enforce safety measures. Other such offenses as adultery and conduct unbecoming an officer could lead to dismissal.
In a 13-month period alone from 2003 to 2004, according to a Navy Times report, 20 U.S. Navy skippers were fired.
Whatever it was must have happened while he was the XO.
Only 5 days? How do you screw up that bad in 5 days? WOW!! He didn't even have time to unpack his gear.
More from Stars and Stripes:
While Garcia declined to provide details of the ongoing investigation surrounding Rankin, she said it was not the result of a mishap or accident involving the squadrons radar-jamming aircraft.
BTW, it was 9 days. My bad math.
The investigation began Thursday, Garcia said. Rankin assumed command on April 7, only five days before. He was the squadronÃÂs executive officer for the previous 15 months, Garcia said.
Hubby was with a Marine Corps Prowler Squadron when we were stationed at Cherry Point. Best unit he has EVER been with. Best CO he has EVER had.
This base here in Yuma has had quite a few of their COs lose their commands lately. Don’t know what the heck is going on, but it can get ugly.
Your thoughts Jack.
I served in VMAQ-1 “Banshee’s” from 1993 until Jan 2001.
Could be ANYTHING. At a USAF base I was at a Squadron Commander was relieved when he was pinched for DUI COMING HOME from his party at the O Club to celebrate his new command.
He was a Moondog :-)
But they kicked off the investigation on the 5th day, per the story. It apparently took a long weekend to put the case together. "The investigation began Thursday, Garcia said. Rankin assumed command on April 7, only five days before."
Then you need to allow a day or two for the approvals to go up the chain of command.
He took command on a Saturday, the investigation started on a Thursday, and he was sacked on Monday.
It has to predate this command, or he did something really obvious and really stupid.

Ah yes VMAQ-3, we shared the same hanger bay. (When either unit wasn’t deployed.) I rember when that units CO, XO, OPSO and many SNCOIC’s were relieved of their duties for bad maintenance procedures in the mid 90’s. Yes life in a Q squadron could be very cruel.
that’s what I was thinking. it happened at a previous command and it finally caught up with him.
Not necessarily. A CO of VP-1 was relieved in the 80s after two aircraft accidents on his watch.
Something caught up with him. Not a record, though: when I was the SJA of an AF flying unit, the first female squadron commander was relieved of her duties between the reviewing stand and arriving back at the squadron orderly room. Wing Commander wouldn’t ever tell me what she said that got her canned, but I’d never seen him so steamed.
