Accused Former Duke Lax Player Lands Morgan Stanley Job
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 18, 2007 | Dana Cimilluca

Posted on 04/18/2007 11:03:11 AM PDT by abb

A few months ago, former Duke University lacrosse captain David Evans was facing rape charges. He was shunned and taunted for his alleged role in a crime that North Carolina’s attorney general has declared never happened.

Now Evans has gained the trust of Morgan Stanley Chief Executive John Mack, a Duke alum and trustee (class of ‘68) who went to bat for Evans after serious questions were raised about the case against he and his two former teammates.

Evans now has landed one of the most prestigious jobs on Wall Street, Deal Journal has learned. Morgan Stanley has hired Evans, who graduated in May 2006, as part of its analyst program. Landing a plum job — which is paying well into the six-figure range these days — has to be a satisfying end to a bitter sequence of events for Evans since the rape allegations surfaced in March 2006.

The 24-year-old Maryland native had a job lined up at J.P. Morgan Chase’s investment bank that was rescinded in the wake of his May 2006 indictment, with the bank telling him it probably wasn’t the best time to be starting a new job. After he was cleared recently, J.P. Morgan came back to Evans and made a new offer, which he declined.

J.P. Morgan declined to comment. We’re trying to get comment from Evans and will post again if and when that happens.

But don’t expect his life to resume the course it was on any time soon. When asked by Leslie Stahl in a recent “60 Minutes” show whether the dismissal of the charges means the ordeal is over for him, Evans said, “I don’t think it really will ever be over … when I die, they’ll say ‘one of the three Duke lacrosse rape suspects died today...

It might have been legal but it was stupid. They invited two unknown women into that house. They added alcohol. A tailor-made situation for a rape charge. Men need to know they are at risk of such a thing whenever they are alone with an unknown female. If she’s a nutjob, you are in trouble.

You teach your kids not to walk down a dark alley in a bad neighborhood, don’t you? Why not teach boys they can get in real trouble with a rape charge. There are crazy women out there. Or what if one of the women had a nutjob boyfriend or pimp who decided to show up with a gun?

It might have been legal but it was stupid.

As far as behaving "stupidly" goes, so is driving in a rainstorm, or going to an unfamiliar beach, or visiting a foreign country. Stuff happens, but what happened here would NEVER have happened if they werent white middle class heterosexuals. The rest of your editorial, IMO, is just pansified flotsam from an epicine puritan.

He got a plum job as an analyst with a major wirehouse. This means he gets 6 figures/year + bonus w/full benies for basically sitting in a plush up office with his thumb up his wazzoo, reading the newspaper, talking to a few investor relations types, throwing a dart every now and then at the “target price dartbord” and typing the relults into a “research report. For you or I, this is equivalent to hitting the frikkin Lotto. And in a few years, he will join a high powered hedge fund or mutual fund advisory team and make the big money keeping pace with the market...

I’ll bet the firm’s CEO/Duke trustee offered him the job under the condition he NOT sue “dear old Alma Mater”. Once again, not what you know, but...

OK, so the majority of the team wants to hire a stripper and they don’t. So they leave instead of participating. How is this bad? Remember, the team isn’t some monolithic entity.

I agree, they were screwed. ;)

But if the team hadn’t hired here, he would have been fine.

They’ve already run the gauntlet of critics like you. It must be such a comfort knowing that YOU have never made a mistake.

I have to say, that’s the first time I have ever been called and epicine puritan. At least you were witty. Points there.

Its from my mistakes that I can teach my kids to hopefully make fewer. Or at least different ones.

I can’t believe people are really condoning hiring a stripper. Yes, people do it. Yes it’s legal. No, it’s not okay.

How so? They weren’t even present at the event, and the DA arrested them.

Here’s a scenario - you are at work, and a bunch of your male co-workers decide to throw another male co-worker who is about to get married a bachelor party. You, being female (I’m assuming you are from your handle), decide not to participate for moral reasons and go home.

The next morning as you prepare to go to work, the police show up and arrest you for rape, because the stripper that was hired at the party swears up and down that you committed lesbian rape in conjunction with your male co-workers. You weren’t there, you had nothing to do with the event, but since you belong to the same organization, clearly you had to be guilty of some moral turpitude, right?

That is exactly what happened in this case.

They weren’t just walking down the street. With a little foresight, this could have been prevented.

A kid in NJ died a week or so ago from alcohol poisoning. I guess I shouldn’t warn my kids about that. I mean, life’s dangerous.

They, too, no doubt, have learned, like you. So, why don’t you just stop the judgmentalism and get on w/your own life....as they are trying to do.

I agree, I agree! Colin was screwed. The situation was awful. But if THE TEAM did not hire the stripper he would have been fine.

As an aside, good thing he did leave because his alibi was huge in making the whole house of cards fall apart.
