BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The suspected gunman in the Virginia Tech shooting rampage, Cho Seung-Hui, was a troubled 23-year-old senior from South Korea who investigators believe left an invective-filled note in his dorm room, sources say.

The note included a rambling list of grievances and ended with the words "Ismail Ax" in red ink on the inside of one of his arms.

Sounds like Cho had changed his name to ‘Ishmael Ax’ before he died.

“Could he be referring to himself as Ismael’s Ax (or weapon)?”

That would be the obvious rendering of the words. I expect some psycho-babble bs to come from the investigation, probably the FBI in fact.

Ishmael Ax is probably a variant of the name of the World of WarCraft character he uses for gold farming.

I read the same Trib article and after I googled Ismail Ax and returned to the story the Trib had pulled the sentence referring to Ismail Ax.

*** Bears repeating! The enemedia is at it again! ***

Oh, come on. They just edited the sentence to make it somewhat coherent.

Google says Ismail was one of the Prophets, saved by Mohammad, who continues to call the people to Allah.

I am curious if the purple cap this kid wore was a skull cap often seen worn by Muslim men?

No, what they did was change the second paragraph to actually make sense. Read what’s posted at the top of this thread, then hit the link and check the revised article, and you’ll see that the original article’s second paragraph was nonsense, and had to be revised to indicate more clearly that “Ismail Ax” was on his arm, not (I guess) on the note.

But there is a HUGE Muslim presence in Northern VA, where he grew up. I’m still betting on the Moby Dick theory.

"Ismail Ax"

"Ishmael (Hebrew: יִשְׁמָעֵאל, Standard Yišmaʿel Tiberian Yišmāʿêl; Arabic: إسماعيل, Ismā'īl; translates as "God will hear" (Strong's Dictionary)) was Abraham's eldest son, born by his wife's handmaiden Hagar. Though being born of Hagar, according to the Mesopotamian law, he was credited to Sarah (Gn. 16:2)[1] According to the Genesis account, he died at the age of 137 (Gn. 25:17). Judaism has generally viewed Ishmael as wicked though repentant.[1] Islamic tradition, however, has a very positive view of Ishmael,---" Wikipedia

Honor is a big part of Korean culture. I know of an excellent reformed seminary here in the US that happens to have a large population of Korean students. These are solid, Christian students. Yet, theft has been a problem because they don’t always have what they need to get through and make good grades. Fear of others in their culture is stronger for many than their fear of God. I used to teach children in a Korean Sunday School (in Fairfax) and I learned that their emphasis on their Korean culture could easily be stronger than their emphasis on the Bible. And interestingly enough, my daughter was once stalked by a Korean student in a private school. Fortunately, the school dealt with the problem quickly and competently. All this is to say that Korean culture has a huge hold on people even after they’ve immigrated here.

"There were mass murderers long before Prozac was invented."

True. However, most of the "kid" school shooters have been on Prozac. And they usually don't tell us until much later.

I go with miserable and crazy myself.

Someone brought up an old poem with an Ismael who sought to marry someone etc etc.

Which fits better..... the guy was an English Major! They go for the drama like this (and obscure poems).

Worked with or for a number of companies that had similar cultures.

Some people didn’t mind, some it drove them nuts, most of the former left after a few weeks.
