Ishmael = Jewish Spelling
Ismail = Arab spelling

Similar to:

Abraham = Jewish Spelling
Ibrahim = Arab Spelling

We're talking about at least three different alphabets here -- Hebrew, Arabic and Roman. Some of them by way of Greek. We're not talking about spellings, but transliteration -- and for crying out loud, 20-odd years after Ghadaffi got our attention, there is no consensus on whether his name should begin with a G, a K or a Q, whether it should end in I or Y, and just what the hell should come in between.

I had the same thought. Just not clear! Wonder if the words signed on the note were like those that are also on his arm.

Ooooh. Waitasec. I don’t KNOW that it is, but somebody found the “possible” pic of the shooter, and it really does look like him. If you look at the linkages of the other blogs that connect to it, they mention “Ismail ax” and also quickly link up with a bunch of french-language traffic out of Morocco.

The close linkage of all of this stuff has me intrigued.

I'm sorry to say that the Islamic idea is not panning out.

The Ishmael Axe reference apparently refers to a literary work and has nothing to do with Islam. The guy is a English major, which makes perfect sense. It is apparently a character in a rather esoteric book.

I would have to admit, the connecting is now classified as a false assumption.

That may be all it is, but the ME influences seem at least to be ironic.

Someone googled Ismail and got a citation for an article in a math journal by someone named Ismail.

Gee, can't imagine how that happened.

About the only thing to surface from a web search of “Ismail Ax” is a French-language photo blog, referring to someone using that term and bearing a good resemblance to the shooter. Several related photos were found as noted.

They haven’t been proven him yet (the incident occurred just yesterday, takes a little while to contact people & get verification), but when a little casual searching turns up photos that similar involving unique text, the odds look pretty good it’s him.

Nope. The common and contemporary spelling for english-speaking arab text is Ismail, Ishmael in Jewish. My point is that it isn’t misspelled, but that there are multiple correct spellings, based on your audience.

Ismail is arab.

What ME influences? A group trip to Morrocco doesn’t count for much.

“The Ishmael Axe reference apparently refers to a literary work...”

Where? What literary work?

Isn’t Morocco Islamic? Touristy, sure, but still islamic. Just got bombed, too, for being pro-western, IIRC.

There’s a billion of ‘em in this world.
Visiting one country (noted for gambling & pleasure, BTW) is hardly enough for a connection.
