Here’s something else that’s weird. Assuming that the shooter has been killed, there’s no “legal case” to be made here. Why be so stingy on details?

Give it time. Remember there are something like 22,000 students at VA Tech. Sooner or later someone who knew the shooter and/or girlfriend will show up.
I was thinking about April being a bad month, too. It seems very strange. I wonder what it is?
Using the “ found nothing, there are a couple here worth reading even if not related.
With no ID yet on the shooter, and the President getting ready to speak on the event, that may suggest this was some type of terrorist action. I don't know, just speculating like most others.
But the fact remains, no ID on the shooter, hours later, after the event, is rather odd.

I’m like a freakin’ pariah now to all these people who have no clue what I’m about (I consider it libel to be pegged a liberal, when I’m not).
Anyway, of course, your points are all well-taken.
The point of the ban would be that those caught would be punished, at least. At least it would be generally well understood that students aren’t going to have any weapons (and we always talk about GUNS, but there ARE other weapons).
My concern would be these students are largely irresponsible (in general; I’m not talking if they can handle a gun well when sober - and this is no matter what anyone here says to the contrary; I hold to my opinion). They may not have any intention of “mass murdering” in an instant in time, but their foolishness and carelessness - and self-centeredness - can lead to lots of general injuries/deaths. “how dare he look at me funny” - BANG
That’s what I’m afraid would happen.
What’s wrong with a gated, secure, campus entrance? Might be good ideas. To help mitigate the lack of student weapons.
And again, please note not only students are on campus. I mentioned staff, faculty, anyone working there, should have weaponry.
