Ex-Nazi’s work permit cancelled
Italian authorities have cancelled the work permit of a convicted Nazi war criminal after complaints by members of the Jewish community.

There were protests outside the lawyer’s office in Rome where former Nazi officer Erich Priebke, 93 was due to begin work on Monday.

Shouts of “Murderer!” rang out as Priebke arrived for his first day on the back of a scooter.

Judge Isacco Giorgio Giustiniani suspended the work permit on Tuesday.

1944 massacre

A court had ruled last week that Priebke, who is serving a sentence for multiple murders, could work on day release.

Priebke was jailed for life in 1998 for his role in the massacre of 335 Italians in 1944.

He had been discovered working as a schoolteacher in Argentina and was extradited to stand trial.

In 1999, he was given leave to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest in his lawyer’s home, on the grounds of his ill health.

But a military court ruled last week that he could go to work as a translator at his lawyer’s office “every day, freely”.

One Jewish protester, 80-year-old Leone Sonnino, said on Monday: “It’s an absolute disgrace, people forget.

“People say ‘It’s enough now.’ Enough for what? Nothing should be enough, there can never be enough grief.”

‘Re-education’

But Priebke’s lawyer, Paolo Giachini, defended the decision.

“The law says that after a period in prison, inmates have the right to certain benefits, because detention here in Italy isn’t just punitive, it tries to re-educate those who have been condemned,” he told Reuters news agency.

The 1944 massacre was a reprisal ordered by Adolf Hitler after partisans killed a patrol of 33 German soldiers.

Priebke was one of several officers present during the killing of the men and boys, 75 of whom were Jewish, at the caves.

Released Farc man leaves Colombia
A top official from the Farc guerrilla army has left Colombia for Cuba two weeks after being freed from prison.

Rodrigo Granda, regarded as a “foreign minister” for Farc, was accompanied by a Catholic priest who is serving as a guarantor of his conditional release.

Mr Granda was freed as part of efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Farc rebels in secret jungle camps.

Colombia’s government said it hoped Mr Granda would continue serving the peace process during his stay in Cuba.

“He took a decision to leave the country. I believe he can do so and the government hopes he will carry out a role as a peace facilitator from Cuba as well,” Interior Minister Carlos Holguin said.

The Cuban capital, Havana, has served as a venue for several rounds of exploratory talks between Bogota and Colombia’s second-biggest rebel group, the ELN.

However, Mr Granda has been quoted as saying he is only visiting Cuba to receive medical care.

President Alvaro Uribe has said he hoped Mr Granda’s release two weeks ago would pave the way for the release of hostages held by Farc, including three US citizens and the French-Colombia presidential candidate, Ingrid Betancourt.

But Farc has said it would only discuss the possibility of a prisoner exchange if the government created a demilitarised zone as a venue for talks.

Mr Uribe has repeatedly rejected this demand.

JI militant hits out at fugitive
Captured Indonesian militant Abu Dujana has distanced himself from Noordin Top, a key wanted figure in the regional Islamist group Jemaah Islamiah (JI).

In an interview with an Indonesian magazine, Dujana accused the fugitive of planning the 2003 bombing of the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta.

Dujana was also implicated in the attack but, in the interview, said he had disapproved of the bombing.

He was arrested last week and has said he is leader of JI’s military wing.

JI is rumoured to have suffered splits in recent years as members disagreed over the organisation’s methods amid a major international crackdown on its activities that led to scores of arrests.

Abu Dujana’s comments, to Tempo magazine, would appear to back up speculation that Noordin Top had set up a splinter group, analysts say.

Videotaped confessions

Speaking from his prison in the Javan city of Yogyakarta, Abu Dujana said he had been “mad with Noordin for his action” over the Marriott attack that killed 14 people, the Tempo article said.

KEY JI FIGURES
Noordin Mohamed Top, bomb maker and head of splinter group, still on run
Dulmatin, in hiding in the southern Philippines
Leader Zarkasih, in police custody
Military leader Abu Dujana, in police custody
Bomb expert Azahari Husin shot dead by police in 2005
Abu Bakar Ba’ashir, alleged JI spiritual leader, released from jail in 2006
Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Ali Ghufron on death row for 2002 Bali bombings
Hambali, alleged JI operations chief, held in Guantanamo Bay

He admitted attending a meeting at which the attack was discussed, but implied Noordin Top had already got plans under way for the bombing without his knowledge.

“Noordin had recruited the people [who allegedly carried out the attack] before the meeting with me,” he told Tempo.

“Later, I learned that the meeting with Noordin had put me on a suspect list of those who were involved in the planning of the Marriott bombing,” he said.

“I just laughed when I read that in the media.”

When asked by Tempo if he had disapproved on the attack, he said: “Yes”.

Abu Dujana, 37, was arrested more than a week ago in Yogyakarta along with several other people, including the man who is believed to be the overall head of JI, Zarkasih.

Both men this week were seen giving videotaped confessions of their roles within the organisation.

Noordin Top, a Malaysian national, has long been on Indonesia’s most wanted list - accused of having a hand in most of the bomb attacks since 2002.

Garden gnomes hid smuggled snakes
Australian customs officials have found live reptiles hidden in the hollowed insides of ceramic garden gnomes sent as gifts from England.

A total of seven snakes and eight lizards were found inside three of the pottery figurines.

The snakes, destined for two addresses in Sydney, were found when the parcels were opened by customs officials.

The two addresses where the gnomes were heading have been raided but no arrests have been made.

“When the package was opened, the officer spotted several snakes moving about. The package was immediately resealed,” Australian customs said in a statement.

Due to quarantine regulations, all the reptiles were put down.

A special licence is needed to bring live reptiles into Australia.

People found guilty of smuggling wildlife into the country face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 110,000 Australian dollars ($92,700; £46,700).

>>>>Al Qaeda also used diamonds purchased in Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo, tanzanite from Tanzania and other commodities to make money and hide assets. But gold played a uniquely important role in the group’s financial structure, investigators and intelligence sources said, because it is a global currency.

“Gold is a huge factor in the moving of terrorist money because you can melt it, smelt it or deposit it on account with no questions asked,” said a senior U.S. law enforcement official investigating gold transactions. “Why move it through Dubai? Because there is a willful blindness there.”<<<<
