Thanks for the Pakistani sailor post.

I had missed it.

Sounds a bit like the sailors on the freight ships, on our east coast a couple years ago.

Easy method to get in with.

Threat forces UC Riverside to cancel graduation ceremonies

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The University of California, Riverside, canceled final exams and a graduation ceremony Friday evening after finding a homemade firebomb on campus and receiving two threatening letters.
“The campus is taking the threat seriously,” school officials said in a statement released late Friday afternoon.

School officials decided to take action after groundskeepers found two plastic bottles that possibly contained flammable liquid near a burning palm tree outside the Life Sciences building around 5:25 a.m., said campus Police Chief Mike Lane.

Another suspicious device was found hidden in a planter near that building three hours later, and two handwritten, threatening letters were received in the afternoon, Lane said.

The second letter “reiterated a threat against tonight’s commencement,” he said. (snip)

CIA-launched fund invests in image sensor company
Posted by Stephen Shankland

In-Q-Tel, a private investment firm launched by the CIA to support U.S. intelligence agencies, has invested in image sensor maker Pixim, the company said Wednesday.

The investment was part of a $15 million funding round announced in March that also included Tallwood Venture Capital, Ridgewood Capital and the Mayfield Fund.

Pixim sells digital image sensors and associated software used in surveillance cameras. The technology is geared to work in particular with difficult lighting conditions. The company’s Orca chips are used in more than 100 camera models available today.

“In-Q-Tel invested in Pixim because it offers government and commercial users a new capability to significantly enhance critical decision making,” said Troy M. Pearsall, In-Q-Tel’s executive vice president of technology transfer, in a statement.

Image sensors convert analog information from light into digital information that can be processed by a computer. Pixim uses a technology it calls Digital Pixel System that uses an analog-to-digital converter at each sensor pixel rather than sharing a converter among many pixels.

I kept hearing the bomb at the college on the radio, but never heard the town. in post 5082.

850koa.com had a report for longmont , colorado, said they went with a warrant, used tear gas, but the people were not the one on the warrant, they said there were explosives there and were keeping the people away, from 5 houses.

found the article, but it says about the same as above, with no arrests.

Police storm home in northwest Longmont

By Melanie M. Sidwell
The Daily Times-Call

LONGMONT — Police surrounded a home in northwest Longmont around 6 p.m. Friday, fired tear gas into the building to expel two residents, and swept the house for explosives.

Officers interviewed and released a man and woman who live at the house, and investigators worked to identify hazardous chemicals found inside the building late Friday.

It’s too soon to say whether materials in the home are linked to dozens of small explosives found outside the Longmont Clinic and the surrounding neighborhood since April, Longmont police spokesman Cmdr. Craig Earhart said.

Police would not release the names of the two people in the house or comment on what was found inside, he said.

Police expected to keep 24th Avenue between Vivian Street and Sunset Drive closed through Saturday morning, he said. Officers allowed evacuated residents to return to their homes by 10 p.m. Friday.

Japan ex-spy chief raided over NKorean ‘embassy’ deal

Shigetake Ogata, former head of Japan’s Public Security Intelligence
Agency speaks before press in Tokyo 13 June 2007. Prosecutors have raided
the home of the former Japanese spy chief over his controversial deal
to buy North Korea’s de facto embassy in Tokyo which has angered the
government, reports said Thursday.

Prosecutors raided the home of Japan’s former spy chief after he agreed
to buy North Korea’s de facto embassy as a goodwill gesture, angering
the conservative government, he said Thursday.
.
Authorities also searched the office of the investment firm headed by
Shigetake Ogata, the retired head of the Public Security Intelligence
Agency which monitors North Korean activities.
.
Speaking to reporters outside his home early Thursday, the 73-year-old
called the overnight raids “strange” and said they were aimed at
tarnishing his reputation.
.
“They wanted to show that a raid had taken place here in order to
scuttle the deal,” he said.
.
“They did this only for show to the media,” he said. “I sense something
political in their move.”
.
Prosecutors declined comment on the raids. News reports said they
suspected Ogata had agreed to transfer ownership of the building without
actual payment.
.
Ogata’s firm has agreed to buy the headquarters of Chongryon, the
association of Koreans in Japan who are affiliated with the cash-strapped
communist North, for about 3.5 billion yen (30 million dollars).
.
Some 600,000 Koreans live in Japan, mostly a legacy of those who
emigrated or were forced to Japan during its 1910-1945 colonial rule of the
Korean peninsula. About 10 percent are believed to be affiliated with
Chongryon.
.
Ogata, despite his former role as a spy, said he went ahead with the
controversial purchase out of sympathy as he believed the community
needed a home.
.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has publicly rebuked Ogata, saying that some
Chongryon members are criminals.
.
The conservative premier has built his career championing a tough line
on the communist state due to its nuclear weapons and past kidnappings
of Japanese civilians.
.
But Koken Tsuchiya, a lawyer for Chongryon, said the financial
transaction “has nothing to do with crime.”
.
Ogata has said he would give Chongryon top priority if it wanted later
to repurchase the Tokyo property, which is in the heart of one of the
world’s most expensive cities.
.
Chongryon feared the building would be taken over by the state-run debt
collection agency, which is demanding repayment of loans worth 62.8
billion yen (512 million dollars) lent to 16 Chongryon-affiliated credit
associations which went bankrupt. — AFP

EU looks at ways of reining in its spies

BRUSSELS, June 13 (UPI) — The European Union is considering how to
provide scrutiny for a secret working group that allows intelligence
agencies to share information.

The Clearing House was a response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist
attacks on the United States. Its functions include deciding which
individuals and organizations should be on the EU terrorist register, which
allows their assets to be frozen, the EU Observer reported.

At the moment, Clearing House decisions are made in secret. It does not
even appear on the official list of working groups.

SL to strike it rich with carbon trading

By Nadia Fazlulhaq

The Environment Ministry is taking measures to establish a Carbon Fund and make it the main foreign currency earning source of the country through greenhouse gas emission reduction trading (Carbon Trading). Environment and Natural Resources Minister Champika Ranawaka has submitted a Cabinet Memorandum on the establishment of the Sri Lanka Carbon Fund which was approved.

Central Environmental Authority Chairman Udaya Gammanpila said the establishment of the Carbon Fund was a direct result following deliberations made at the Kyoto Protocol at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The main objective of the protocol was to reduce the emission of six green house gases including carbon dioxide.

“A carbon quota has been given for each country and if any country had exceeded the amount, it will have to be brought down immediately or it will be taxed. The monies collected from the countries which have exceeded their quotas will be given to the countries which have released a small amount or underutilized their quotas, to be used for environment conservation,” he said.

The Environment Ministry is hoping to minimize the emission of green house gases and underutilize the quota and so claim a bigger amount from the fund which will be used for eco-friendly projects. “We are hoping to reduce carbon emission by reforestation, garbage recycling and reducing the carbon released by vehicles and are hoping to introduce strict regulations once technical assistance and necessary equipment are brought down. Introducing of two-stroke three wheelers is one step of this huge process,” said Mr. Gammanpila.

Amir Cheema – Son of the Soil or Extremist?
MYSTERY REMAINS UNANSWERED

By Asem Mustafa

Amir Cheema a student in Germany was found dead in his cell in Moabit Prison, Berlin on May 4, by the German Police authorities who later gave a note scribbled by him that he committed suicide.

The details are very sketchy as the extremes of opinion concerning his mysterious death leaves a lot to be desired from the two governments who are probing the case.

The family of the deceased and people in Pakistan have completely acted otherwise to the details given by the authorities and have asked that there should be a fresh probe to determine the cause of Amir Cheema’s death. Amir’s father Nazir Ahmed Cheema has alleged that his son was killed in police custody and he couldn’t have committed suicide.

The ambassador of Germany Dr. Gunter Mulack in Islamabad at a press conference before the arrival of Amir Cheema’s body said no sign of torture was found on his body and that he had committed suicide.

The police officials sent by Government of Pakistan to investigate the death of Amir Cheema have asked 20 queries from the German authorities about the deceased and were not satisfied from the answers and the cooperation extended. Amir was found with hands tied behind his back and hanging from the ceiling.

Amir Cheema, 28, was arrested in Berlin on March 20 after he reportedly tried to enter the offices of the German newspaper Die Welt, which had published blasphemous cartoon of Prophet Muhammad SAW . He was accused of trying to kill the German newspaper’s editor-in-chief Roger Koeppel and later was announced dead on May 4 in police custody.

Thousands of mourners attended the funeral Amir Cheema, who was buried at Saroki village, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) northwest of Lahore, provincial metropolis of Punjab, on May 13. His wish to be buried in Rawalpindi where he studied was not granted and Government of Pakistan acted otherwise taking away the body and created a doubt in the timings of the funeral.

The Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights have also raised objections on handling of the entire case and have raised the issue of an autopsy to be conducted by Pakistani doctors. Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights, Senator S.M. Zafar, said the committee has not reached a final conclusion on the issue and would give its judgment after analyzing all the aspects and available evidence.

Tariq Khosa, additional director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), told the Senate Committee in Islamabad that Amir Cheema was found with his hands tied behind his back. His findings were contrary to the stand made earlier by the Government of Pakistan as in endorsing the German police authority views that it was a suicide.

Tariq Khosa went to Germany last month and gave the details as student could have been murdered with his hands tied behind his back and also the letter written by Amir Cheema was not handed to the Pakistan investigation team.

He briefed the Senate Standing committee there were marks on Amir’s wrist as they were tied and his life line was ruptured. Senator SM Zafar has asked Tariq Khosa and Foreign Office to inform the committee if they failed to receive a reply to the questionnaire from Germany within ten days. The official also informed that the FIA hadn’t finalised its report on the death and could examine the body again.

He told that the German prison officials had supplied a ‘translated version’ of a letter reportedly written by Cheema in which he confessed planning an attack on the newspaper editor. However, he said, the German authorities had refused to give the original letter.

Condemning the incident and the government’s “criminal silence over this sensitive issue” Mutahidda Majlise Amal leader Prof Ghafoor said this proved that there was a US-Europe puppet government in Islamabad.

“Cheema’s death in custody of German police is a clear case of extra judicial killing, but our government, instead of lodging even a formal protest with the German government, has reaffirmed its intention to maintain normal relations with that country. This is condemnable.”

The common public gave a heroes welcome to the deceased body and honoured his love for the Prophet Muhammad SAW and termed him a hero and son of the soil who made no compromise when it came to Prophet Muhammad SAW’s honour. His funeral was attended by over 200,000 people and despite the killing heat people from all over Pakistan came to the remote village to show their respect for the deceased.

[Interesting blog on Dubai and plans]

10 Billion US$ For Education
A World Economic Forum on the Middle East wraps up on Sunday after highlighting the need for education to strengthen competitiveness and amid calls to support an Arab plan for peace with Israel.

http://www.dubaiinformer.com/
United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum announced a 10-billion-dollar education fund to bridge what he called a wide knowledge gap between the region and the developed world in the West and Asia.

“Our only choice is to bridge this gap as quickly as possible, because our age is defined by knowledge,” he said.

Sheikh Mohammed, who also rules the booming emirate of Dubai, said the foundation will establish research centres in the region and in 2008 will begin providing scholarships for students to top world universities and institutes.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II also urged delegates to think of the future.

“These young men and women deserve to be part of a prospering region that is playing its rightful role on the world stage,” he told the forum on Friday.

Of 325 million people living in the Arab world, more than 200 million are under 24, the king said.

Appeals to invest in people were also echoed by other participants, with one panelist pointing out that only 298 patents have been issued in the Middle East and North Africa.

“The United States issues nearly 500 patents per day,” said Arif Naqvi, a leading UAE businessman. “The region can only close this tremendous innovation gap through education.”

On the political front, an Arab plan for peace with Israel received further backing, with King Abdullah calling it an “historic opportunity to achieve a just, comprehensive and lasting settlement.”

“It is in the interest of this entire region — and indeed, the world — that we succeed,” he said, referring to the Saudi initiative revived at an Arab summit in March.

The plan offers Israel normal relations in exchange for its withdrawal from all land seized in 1967, the creation of a Palestinian state and the return of Palestinian refugees.

Israel rejected the plan when it was first mooted in 2002 but has said recently that the proposal could provide a basis for talks, provided there are amendments to the refugee issue.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Muslim nations should support the plan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz called the Palestinian issue “core to stability in the world.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was sceptical, however, saying that all previous peace plans had failed “because of the approach of the other side” — meaning Israel.

“We do not see any chance for the success of the Arab peace initiative because it fails to address fateful issues, like the capital of a Palestinian state and the right of return for some five million refugees,” he added.

Jordan’s Prime Minister and Defence Minister Marouf Bakhit said that “for the first time the Arabs have taken control of the peace agenda.”

Some 1,000 participants from around 50 countries attended the annual forum which will be held in Egypt next year.

Leaders of the G11 developing countries also met on the sidelines and agreed on a framework of cooperation with G8 industrialised nations in a bid to ease debt and build more prosperous economies.

[a snippet, from a non-terror site]

http://www.heroesamongus.blogspot.com/

The Hero is Roy Thorson

Royisms

• When I told Dad that someone had stolen the bells from the Santa
Isabella Mission in California, Dad said,
“It must have been some ding-a-ling.”

• I’d taken a trip to England. Dad asked how far ahead in time
they were.“ They are 8 hours ahead,” I told him.
“Well, they should be,” he replied.
“They were discovered before we were.”

• Dad went to work one day not feeling quite well. Someone said,
“Roy, you look half-dead.” Dad retorted.
“Well I am! I’m 60… going on 120.”

• “75% of us is water. In some of us it’s 35% and the rest is
something else.”

• Dad was at his doctor’s office. A little boy was looking at the
aquarium and wanted to know which one was the catfish. Dad told
the little boy the catfish was the one with four legs.

• Mom and Dad put some artificial flowers in their yard but
Dad thought about it and said, “I think it’d be better to put
in some artificial snails.”

Dad’s life wasn’t all apple pie and roses, (although he did
marry Rosita, the little rose.) He fell overboard while in the
navy and almost drown. He was fired for refusing to do business
unethically. And later in his career, the company he worked for
shut down shortly before his retirement. He had to start over,
which he did. That takes a lot of character.
That took someone like my Father.

In my Hero column I write about Life Lessons. Dad’s taught me many.

Roy’s Life Lessons
…And Fatherly Advice

1. Be Creative
My father is a creative person. How else do you come up with things
like the line about some Ding-a-ling?

2. Love Nature
Dad taught me to love nature. He talks to squirrels and chipmunks.
He whistles to the birds. And you should see his backyard!

3. Be Who You Are
My mom calls my Dad a “stubborn” Norwegian. Now there’s some
good in that. The good side of stubbornness is persistence. I probably
would’ve given up long ago on the enormous challenges I’ve had in my
life without inheriting some of that. Dad knows. Nobody can be YOU,
better than you can. Revel in it.

4. When the Situation Gets Tense, You Get “Cool”
Dad was uptown one evening after work when two guys were about
to get into a fight. Dad stepped in the middle, sort of acting as a
referee to the men about to fight. Dad said he tries to give one a
little more confidence and deflates the anger of the other. “If they
could only see the strength of the two of them and the power they
would have together.” Pretty good advice when ever there is a disagreement.

5. When You’re Stuck Inside, Dream and Plan
Dad has to do this every Wisconsin winter. He has so many projects,
that when spring does finally sprung, he’s busy the whole summer.

6. You Do What You Can, Then Let Go
When Dad was working very hard selling cars, he went out to the
farmer’s homes. While they milked cows, he talked to them about
new cars. He talked to client after client. He phoned. Still he had no
sales. He’d done everything he could think of. So he just put his feet
up on his desk and relaxed for a few days. Then 7-10 people came in and
bought cars all the same evening. Dad was there till midnight selling
from the seeds he planted earlier.

7. When You Go Overboard, It Can Get Pretty Scary
In anything in life, if we go overboard, it can take us under. Dad got
the chance to do that in the Navy, while painting the sides of the ship.
He and his friend suddenly found themselves head over heels, on the
way down into the deep blue waters. Their youth and a quick thinking
crew saved them. Even though this was an accident, try not to go
overboard in the first place.

8. It’s the First Child That Raises the Parents
That’s what Dad told me. He really believed that the oldest has to
raise the parents and transform them into parents. Now this wasn’t a
lesson I wanted to have, but I found it’s probably true having my own
daughter be so dog-gone smart and “train” me to be her mother.
(She must be another stubborn Norwegian.) Actually parents learn from
all their children, if they’re smart and Dad is.

To a man that I admire, respect, and deeply love, thank you Dad,
for giving this daughter life in your family. Looking forward to
many more one-liners and many more days to wish you,
“Happy Father’s Day.”

Lots of love,

Terri Marie
