A GHOST from the cold war has returned to haunt the CIA. A book to be published this month by a veteran American spy is raising startling new questions about Yuri Nosenko, the Russian defector who played a key part in the inquiry into the assassination of President John F Kennedy.
Conspiracy theorists have long been obsessed with Nosenkos supposed role as the KGB officer who handled the Moscow file of Lee Harvey Oswald, JFKs assassin, who had lived for three years in the Soviet Union.
After Nosenkos defection in 1964 a few months after Kennedy was shot in Dallas he assured the CIA that the KGB had never tried to recruit Oswald, who was regarded as too unstable to be of use.
It was a crucial moment in the cold war, an apparent intelligence breakthrough that may have prevented a nuclear conflict had America concluded that Moscow was behind the assassination. But what if Nosenko was a fraud?
That tantalising possibility is examined in Spy Wars: Moles, Mysteries, and Deadly Games, by Tennent H Bagley, the former CIA case officer who was initially in charge of Nosenkos defection.
James Angleton, chief of the CIAs counter-intelligence unit, went to his grave in 1987 suspecting that Nosenko was a double agent whose main task was to distract the agency from a KGB mole. The book goes a long way toward rehabilitating [the idea] that Angleton was right in calling him a KGB plant, said Ron Rosenbaum, a New York journalist who spoke to Bagley earlier this year.
Bagley, who now lives in Brussels, argues that the KGBs aim was to steer the CIA away from realising that the Russians had recruited an American agent in Moscow in 1949 and perhaps two others later. The book raises the possibility that a KGB mole may have worked at the CIA during the cold war.
Nosenko is believed to be now living under an assumed name somewhere in America. He never gave evidence to the Warren Commission investigating the JFK assassination, but largely as a result of his assurances Washington never took seriously the idea that the KGB plotted to murder Kennedy.
If Nosenko was never who he claimed to be, it is not only Angletons reputation that may have to be revised. Bagleys book seems certain to inflame Americas most formidable group of conspiracy theorists: those who are convinced that Oswald did not act alone.
The target was slowing moving away from him meaning he sensed a slight vertical movement. His best shot needed to be his first shot. The timeline everyone cites began once he fired that first shot. Perhaps the second hit to JFK was luck but it didn't matter because the first and best shot was already fatal.
Especially given it was a junk rifle to begin with.
Well put. Case closed. Anyone visiting Dealy Plaza for the first time probably had my initial reaction: “Damn! Its so close! Like shooting fish in a barrel almost.”
The target was slowing moving away from him meaning he sensed a slight vertical movement.
What I meant to add was that all Oswald needed to do from his resting position for the crucial first shot was to aim slightly high and let JFK slowly intersect his aimpoint.
Two weeks ago, I made my 4th visit to the 6th floor depository museum. I walked the grassy knoll, behind the fence, along the rail tressle. I looked in the sewer drain, etc - all those places where shots "could" have originated. I saw the vantage point where Zapruder filmed the murder. I am no expert and my opinion is only that - my opinion. But I am shooter. I have a good understanding of basic ballistics. I have even shot a Mannlicher Carcano (sp?) with the split receiver. Kennedy wore an extremely stiff back brace that day which was further wrapped with ace bandages. After the first missed shot, the motorcade slowed down which, combined with the direction of movement away from the sniper's nest, presented a virtually stationary target at 85 - 90 yards. Here is my opinion;
The Kennedy assissination was a tragic nexus of a major weirdo and opportunity. Oswald acted alone. No emotional, whacked out list of goofy "what about" questions will change that.
Iv’e been inside the depository...looking down to the street changed my perspective on how difficult the shot had been..I remember thinking that I could have hit him from up there with a good fastball. I have limited shooting skills but it still did not look very far when you consider that Oswald had a sniper badge..
Oswald did. Go to Dealy Plaza and figure it out for yourself.
“The conspiracy kooks could care less”
Duranty covered up the genocide of 10 million and won a Pulitzer.
Do you deny that conspiracies on a massive scale exist?
If you swallow the Warren Report hook, line and sinker - how do you explain Oswalds assassination?
At that distance, with something to lean on, I'd give myself a 50-50 chance of hitting someone in an open, slow-moving car, with my sidearm.
For a trained rifle marksman, with a scope, it was a 'piece of cake' shot.
Oswald's murder, you mean?
Well, there was this feller nicknamed 'Sparky' for his quick temper, he wasn't all there to begin with according to everyone who knew him, who owned a risque night club and was buddy with the cops.
He also liked Kennedy. A lot. The day of the assassination he told one of the girls who worked for him that if he had his gun with him he'd shoot Oswald if given the chance.
So he took his gun and was in the back of the room where Oswald gave his press conference.
On Sunday morning he went to the police station, where everyone knew him and thought nothing of letting him walk in freely, and shot the b*stard who, as he put it "killed my president."
The first thing this fellow said to the first Secret Service agent to question him was "I wanted to show the world that a Jew had guts!"
As my ex-father in law used to chuckle and say when the subject of Oswald's murder by Jack Ruby came up, "there were probably 10,000,000 other guys who'd have done the same thing that morning if they'd had a chance."
Oswald died because the Dallas police was negligent in carrying out their duties, not because there was a conspiracy to kill him.
One nutty lone gunman was killed by another.
Case closed.
Oh, really? And RFK went wide left which should have been perfect for the commies so why did he get shot by a crazy Palestinian?
Answer; it's hard to believe that lone crazed idiots can change history by murdering key figures, but it's happened thoughout history.
And, a lone crazed idiot has a better chance of success precisely because there is no one to give him away...
Dealy Plaza is surprisingly small when you are there, after hearing all about it. tI looms larger in imagination than in fact...
Seems to me, if the KGB wanted someone dead, it wouldn’t be the bungler of the “Bay of Pigs”.
My favorite is the man with the shooting umbrella. That one is followed closely by the shooter in the tree. Even X-files was ignorant enough to claim there was someone in the sewer.
I keep thinking I’m reading a script from Ed Wood of “Plan Nine” fame.
I expect this nonsense from DU but not FR.
“In mid summer 1963 LBJ was headed for prison; “
I am not a conspiracy theory buff but I DO believe this. Same as I believe the klintons have a dossier on Papa Bush which keeps GWB in close tow.
Until the Justice Department does what the Select Committe on Assassinations tasked it with doing in 1976, this case is far from closed.
But then I guess the select committee on Assassinations was just full of “conspiracy kooks” too.
Report of the Select Committee on Assassinations of the U.S. House of Representatives
Summary of Findings and Recommendations
Findings in the Assassination of President Kennedy

Recommendations of the Select Committee on Assassinations
I. Findings of the Select Committee on Assassinations in the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Tex., November 22, 1963
Lee Harvey Oswald fired three shots at President John F. Kennedy. The second and third shots he fired struck the President. The third shot he fired killed the President.
President Kennedy was struck by two rifle shots fired from behind him.
The shots that struck President Kennedy from behind him were fired from the sixth floor window of the southeast corner of the Texas School Book Depository building.
Lee Harvey Oswald owned the rifle that was used to fire the shots from the sixth floor window of the southeast comer of the Texas School Book Depository building.
Lee Harvey Oswald, shortly before the assassination, had access to and was present on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository building.
Lee Harvey Oswald’s other actions tend to support the conclusion that he assassinated President Kennedy.
Scientific acoustical evidence establishes a high probability that two gunmen fired at President John F. Kennedy. Other scientific evidence does not preclude the possibility of two gunmen firing at the President. Scientific evidence negates some specific conspiracy allegations.
The committee believes, on the basis of the evidence available to it, that President John F. Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy. The committee is unable to identify the other gunman or the extent of the conspiracy.
And Oswald qualified as a Marine Corps marksman. One of the few things he ever did well. The impressive thing is that he did what he did with a poor quality rifle.
There is no ‘chain of evidence’ for Oswald to have done the shooting...There was probably a Cuban shooter there to cause a distraction for the kill shots...There is a recent book out on Oswald by a close friend who spent most of the summer in New Orleans with him that goes against the official line of ‘no conspiracy’...Search Amazon under Oswald...Almost every day accounted for, and what he was there in Dallas for, and New Orleans...
The railroad area behing the fence and knoll are a much better shot...Zapruder film shows massive shot to the head from knoll area (right front)...History Channel presentation documentation on LBJ’s guilt was banned, along with the DVD series on JFK conspiracy that was their best seller....Movie JFK provides the leads for further research....
And now read this article about a basic end of life death confession by Howard Hunt to his son all documented on paper and audio tape.
Where is the mainstream media?
Their was a gov conspiracy to kill JFK, along with military, cubans, and mob, and both they and the media are covering it up...I think most of us will see the day soon when they are forced to admit it....
Howard Hunt confessions, more on Noory’s show coming soon, and here is the article:
