There sure is a lot of talk about how "global warming" is about to destroy the planet! And how, if we don't stop driving our SUVs – and go back to living by candlelight – we'll all be dead within the next 20 years. (Just ask your children; that's what they probably already believe.)

But I'd like to propose that there are much worse catastrophes we really should be worried about. Here is my list of the Top 8:

Catastrophe No. 1 – Parents who abdicate their responsibilities

Catastrophe No. 2 – No ‘at-home’ moms and no dads at all

Catastrophe No. 3 – Pornography, free sex and pedophilia

Catastrophe No. 4 – Crime and drug use

Catastrophe No. 5 – Profanity and pop culture

Catastrophe No. 6 – The pitiful education Americans receive

Catastrophe No. 7 – The America-haters in the news media and Hollywood

Catastrophe No. 8 – Liberal Democrats who seem incapable of recognizing ‘good’ from ‘evil’

I know you are being funny, but for the people in Rio
Linda, I think the author is writing about “promiscuity”.

Isn't that similar to something Ted Danson said - about 30 years ago?

While your list is good - I like this one better:

While all important, the 8 are
1 muslims
2 muslims
3 muslims
4 muslims
5 muslims
6 muslims
7 muslims
8 democrats

IF WE DON’T KILL THE ISLAMIC TERRORISTS FIRST - NONE OF THE OTHER STUFF MATTERS.

My favorite comment:

Eight catastrophes that we really should be worried about. And if you wonder where "global warming" comes in on my list, it's just below "slow drivers in the fast lane"!

My list of the most dangerous threats to the United States:

1) Avian flu. Estimated fatalities 10 million Americans, with another 10 million with lifetime severe lung damage.

2) China uses smuggled nuclear devices to destroy the ports of Bremerton, Washington, and San Diego, to neutralize our Pacific fleet prior to an invasion of Taiwan. Estimated fatalities in the millions.

3) Volcanic eruption causes a collapse of the island shelf of La Palma in the Canary Islands, with a resulting tsunami killing millions of Americans along most of the eastern seaboard.

4) Earthquake on the New Madrid fault wipes out the city of Nashville and others. Casualties in the hundreds of thousands.

5) Earthquakes along the San Andreas and Palm Springs faults, or another San Francisco earthquake.

6) Violent revolution in Mexico sends millions of refugees North.

Your list looks more like mine! Biological terrorism, avian flu and New Madrid EQ are at the top of mine. New Madrid EQ would have farther reaching effects than just Nashville. Most of the oil pipelines that service the NE run through there. Last time in the 1800’s, chimneys toppled in Boston!

Re La Palma:

I think it would dissipate significantly travelling across the Atlantic and the continental shelf would stretch out and diminish much of its energy.

But you bring up an excellent point as cataclysmic waves have occured on the east coast before. Googe Earth the South Carolina coast and the rippling effect from previous gigantic waves can still be seen along the shoreline. The ripples are in concentric patterns and their foci is perpendicular to the shoreline, a clear indication they were caused by wave action. So, it could happen again.

The way it has been described as a rock shelf twice the size of the Isle of Man collapsing into the sea. That is one heck of a lot of energy.
