Pelosi: Global Warming Already Underway

Global warming is already underway, but it is not too late to slow it down and reduce its harmful effects, said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Global warming is already underway, but it is not too late to slow it down and reduce its harmful effects, said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi following the release of a report by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II on the effects of climate change.

"The new scientific report on global warming warns that global warming is already affecting the earth and that the effects are likely to be significant and widespread in this century, causing increased drought, drinking water shortages, and widespread extinction of species," Pelosi said, "Poor people around the world are especially vulnerable to the hazards of climate change."

Hunger and water shortages will hit worst the poorest countries, according to the latest report approved Friday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and released in Brussels, Belgium.

Global warming is already having observable impacts worldwide - from massive floods and avalanches in Asia to species extinction - and if temperatures continue to rise will be more dramatic unless nations adapt to climate change and halt its progress, Today's Global Warming Report Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, says.

IPCC report indicates that as temperatures rise, the impacts of global warming get more severe. Just 2 degrees of warming will lead to increased mortality from heat waves, floods and droughts and puts 30% of the world's species at risk for extinction.

"We must base our actions on the moral imperative and the scientific record, free of political interference in scientists' assessments of the effects of climate change on society and the environment," Pelosi said.

"In this Holy Week, we are reminded of these words in the Old Testament: 'To minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.' We must move quickly to honor God's creation by reducing greenhouse gas pollution in the United States and around the world."

The final IPCC report is the clearest and most comprehensive scientific statement to date on the impact of global warming mainly caused by man-induced carbon dioxide pollution. More than 120 nations attended the meeting. Each word was approved by consensus, and any change had to be approved by the scientists who drew up that section of the report. However, the governments of some of the world's biggest polluters and oil producers, China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, tried to water down some aspects of the report.

The summary will be presented to the G8 summit of the world's richest nations in June, when the European Union is expected to renew appeals to President Bush to join in international efforts to control emissions of fossil fuels.

Snowy day in Detroit ices Toronto game

Make-up game with Jays set for Sept. 10

The Associated Press

DETROIT — This was no weather for baseball.

With light snow falling, the temperature in the mid-20s and the wind chill dipping into single digits, Thursday’s game between the Detroit Tigers and was postponed until Sept. 10.

The teams played Monday, had an off day Tuesday, played Wednesday and had another off day Thursday — not exactly the routine they had hoped to get into in the first week of the season.

“Obviously, you don’t want this to happen,” Toronto manager John Gibbons said. “But these conditions are just brutal.”

On Wednesday, cold and 40 mph wind gusts turned fly balls into adventures.

“That’s just not baseball,” said Placido Polanco, who spent most of last year’s postseason playing in a hooded sweat shirt.

Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander’s turn in the rotation was pushed back to today in Kansas City. He acknowledged that the switch would mess with his routine, but said it would be worth it to avoid the cold.

“I know that conditions like this probably benefit me more than the hitters, but I still don’t want to go out there,” Verlander said.

Verlander knows the conditions for some of Detroit’s games in the postseason were almost as bad, but the atmosphere helped him.

“I saw a picture of myself pitching in short sleeves, and now I’m wondering what in the world I was thinking,” he said. “I think Polanco had the right idea.”

Unfortunately for Verlander and his teammates, things won’t be much better in Kansas City. The game-time temperature is forecast to be 36 degrees with a wind chill in the 20s.

The three-game series pits the Tigers against the team that cost them the AL Central title with a three-game sweep on the final weekend of the regular season. Detroit manager Jim Leyland expects the Royals to be better this year following last year’s 62-100 record.

“They are going to turn things around over there, there’s no question about that,” Leyland said.

“And that’s a good thing, because it upgrades this division even more. That’s good baseball.”

The off day will give Tigers outfielder Craig Monroe an extra day to rest following a leg injury. He was scheduled to have Thursday off.

“I was going to play Marcus (Thames),” Leyland said. “It’s a slight strain, and no big deal — he’s ready to play. But why risk it in this weather? It was a perfect opportunity to get Marcus four at-bats.”

Both teams shifted their pitching rotations because of the postponement. The Blue Jays will start Gustavo Chacin, Tomo Ohka and Roy Halladay in Tampa Bay, while the Tigers have Verlander, Mike Maroth and Jeremy Bonderman going against the Royals.

Nancy, that ill advised Jet ride to Syria was a big contributor to your so called climate problem.
Along with your hot air from spouting sheer idiocy.
We are doomed!
Until 2008.

free of political interference in scientists' assessments of the effects of climate change on society and the environment," Pelosi said.

Political interference? Al Gore, Pelosi and the dems are the ones politicizing this issue.

Just in time for spring, the weather here in North Carolina has plummeted to the mid-30s. I’m freezing here. I wish this global warming would go ahead and start already.

Nancy needs to study her Bible more. She might learn something about the tower of Babel and what God meant that mankind cant destroy the world nor save itself......

We knew it would not be long before the our arch Socialist of the House would get on the Global Warming scam bandwagon...seen of course by the left as a taxation resource — what these bottom-feeding useless parasites get away with is just amazing. Between a low-IQ percentage of the voters and the complicit criminal MSM, that seem to be a winning recipe for these thugs.

I just can’t think of a better week for the IPCC/UN “Global Warming” Report to be released...

/sarcasm OFF

Seriously, we should be more worried about this late freeze/cold wave at this time. These low temperatures might really play havoc on the spring crops across the entire nation...

One less taxpayer funded jetliner trip to Syria would have been a good start.
