George Will: Fred Thompson Ain't All That ...
Matt Lewis ^ | 4/7/07

Posted on 04/07/2007 4:48:57 PM PDT by Valin

Columnist George Will is taking a few shots at Fred Thompson:

Thompson has never had to show consuming energy as a candidate, never having been in a closely contested race. He won his two elections with 60 percent of the Tennessee vote in 1994 (for the remaining two years of Al Gore's Senate term) and 61 percent in 1996. He did not seek reelection in 2002 -- not a painful sacrifice for a man who disliked the Senate: "I'm not 30 years old. I don't want to spend the rest of my life up here. I don't like spending 14- and 16-hour days voting on 'sense of the Senate' resolutions on irrelevant matters."

... Is he wise? As a senator he insistently advocated increasing the government's regulation of politics. One of only four senators who supported John McCain's candidacy in 2000, Thompson argued for the McCain-Feingold legislation that regulates the content, timing and amount of political speech.

In 1996, Thompson worked successfully, unfortunately, to preserve the (currently collapsing) system of public financing of presidential campaigns. His arguments were replete with all the rhetoric standard among advocates of government regulation of political speech: Government regulation of politics is necessary to dispel "cynicism" about government (has that worked?), to create a "level playing field" and to prevent politics from being "awash with money" (Congressional Record, May 20, 1996).

George Will’s “conservative” hero:

But what else could you expect from a beltway elitist snob like Will?

Your analogy falls apart because Will’s attack on Thompson is not an attack from the right. He’s a Rudy shill. Good thing for Will that 99.99% of all primary voters don’t read or listen to his inane ramblings posing as intellectual sophistry.

Rudy could pass as the Republican version of Hillary... if he was a Republican.

Heck, Hillary’s more conservative than Rudy; at least she supported Goldwater.

It’s because we know so little about him that makes him so interesting. Since many here don’t like the big 3 and are looking for someone else they become enamored with the flavor of the day. Right now that is Fred. He looks presidential, people believe he is electable, and most think he is more conservative than the front runners so he is their chose. Once he commits and people find out more about him they will start picking him apart and be looking for the next new “if he would only run we would be saved candidate”.

I don’t know that much about Fred right now. Definitely not enough to say he is MY candidate. He may be, but for now I will pay attention to those who have said they are running.

I don’t debate with people who insist on being obtuse.

But you can start here:

and here:

You’ll have to read it yourself as I don’t have it on tape.

Being a “globalist” and thinking globally are two different things:

Thinking Globally simply implies that you evaluate your market/actions on a global scale - to determine how your interests are affected (take advantage of open markets for your products would be an example, as would finding suppliers from other areas that might contribute positively to your business - either financially or in quality - or both).

Being a Globalist in the context at hand would imply someone leaning towards or aiding in the assembly of the “NWO” - New World Order via the elimination of borders, throwing away of national sovereignty, using international law as backing for court decisions, consolidation of currency, etc.

At least that is how I read the post.

Why does each and every day bring more attacks on Republican candidates?

Because for some of us old timers this sounds like "de javu" all overagain.

The struggle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party.

George Will only pretends to care about social conservativism.

I don't know if that is true or not, but Iknow that I am beginning to suspect exactly that from our Washington political leaders.

Will introduced Giuliani at CPAC. I think it is safe to say he wants Rudy to be president.

Thanks for the reminder...

F. Thompson ushered John Roberts through the political process to the Supreme Court, and is a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute with a focus on National Security and Intelligence Issues (Mainly China, North Korea and Russia).

****
After being in the Senate for less than a week, Thompson was tapped to give the Republican response to President Bill Clinton’s “Middle-Class Tax Cut” address on December 15, 1994 . The speech and response were televised nationally. A photo caption in the next day’s Washington Post read: “Sen. Fred Thompson: His charismatic delivery of the GOP response was reminiscent of Ronald Reagan.” During his first years in office, the new Senator continued building his political resume by serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee and as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Youth Violence.

Additionally, Thompson initiated a Congressional investigation into a friendly fire incident during the Gulf War which claimed the life of Sgt. Lance Fielder of Nashville . The Army had covered up the fact that Fielder was killed by friendly fire, and then bestowed medals on the higher-ranking officials who made the decision to fire upon Fielder in an area where they knew that American forces were operating. The investigation ultimately resulted in the forced retirement of the commanding officer of the unit that fired shots at Sgt. Fielder and others, and the revocation by the Army of the medals that had been awarded to those responsible for the incident.

Thompson also made history as the first Senator since World War II to become a major standing committee chairman after only two years in office, earning appointment as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs. As Chairman of this committee, which is charged with overseeing the efficiency of the federal government, Thompson worked with the General Accounting Office to unveil the first-ever audit of the federal government, held hearings to spotlight government waste, fraud, and abuse in federal agencies, worked with government agencies to ensure computer security, and introduced the Regulatory Improvement Act, which increased government accountability to the public.

The defining moment of the Senator’s time as Chairman, however, came in 1997, when the Governmental Affairs Committee was tapped by the Senate leadership to conduct an investigation into alleged improper or illegal activities growing out of the 1996 federal campaigns. At the center of the investigation was a fundraiser attended by Vice President Gore at a Buddhist temple. The Committee exposed a campaign finance system rife with abuse and open to foreign influence, and produced a 9,600-page report that led to several indictments and criminal investigations.

Thompson served as Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee until June 6, 2001 , when Senator Jim Jeffords’ resignation from the Republican Party changed the control of the Senate from Republican to Democratic hands. Thompson then became the committee’s Ranking Minority Member.

In 1998, Thompson was chosen by Senate leadership to serve on the special Senate task force to examine whether the Chinese governmental improperly obtained American satellite and missile technology. In addition to a review by six federal agencies of the entire dual-use and munitions export licensing process, Thompson also proposed legislation to curb the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by China and other countries and to strengthen the United States’ response to such activities.

During his second term in the Senate, Thompson also served on the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over a number of major issues, including taxes, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare reform, and international trade.

A committee chairman has considerable power, but despite this Glenn was able to bend Thompson to his will...sadly, I have to agree with you - I watched much of those hearings and was disappointed with Thompson's lack of forcefulness and inability to "pin" anything on Clinton and his cronies in spite of what appeared an open and shut case - the real politician failed badly to live up to the screen personna.....

Because for some of us old timers this sounds like "de javu" all overagain.

I was around and voting when Goldwater ran for President so I guess that makes me an "old time" too.

I'm not against anyone promoting their candidate of choice. What I don't like is the daily Rudy is a liberal gun grabber, McCain is insane, Rommney is pro-abortion. Most of us that come to FR on a daily basis have already heard those statements a thousand times or more.

We need to all be talking and working on keeping Hillary out of the White House. But, instead there is the daily diet of "Hillary will be the next President".

Rumsfeld Fan, I am not accusing you of this but you read the same things I read here.

Everyone should be promoting their candidate of choice but I don't see where it helps our cause to be heaping criticism upon the other candidates.

I will support and vote for Tancredo or Hunter if they start making a showing in the polls. Don't have anything against either of them. However, if they don't start showing in double digits in the polls by mid year, there are some on FR who had best start getting use to the idea that their candidate are not going to be the nominee.
