Royal Navy personnel seized by Iran were blindfolded, bound and held in isolation during their 13 days in captivity, the crew have said.
They were also subject to random interrogation and rough handling, and faced constant psychological pressure.
In a joint statement the crew also stressed that they were inside Iraqi waters at the time of the capture.
Royal Marine Captain Chris Air said it became apparent that opposing their captors was "not an option."
"If we had, some of us would not be here today, of that I am completely sure," he said.
"We realised that had we resisted there would have been a major fight, one we could not have won and with consequences major strategic impacts.
"We made a conscious decision not to engage the Iranians and do as they asked," he said.
The crew said they spent nights in stone cells, sleeping on piles of blankets and were kept in isolation until their last few nights.
They were also lined up against a wall while weapons were cocked, making them "fear the worst".

Is this Ahmenijad warned Britian not to investigate this matter?
Geneva convention? What Geneva Convention? Where the hell is the Left Wing screamers?.............
I am comparing this reported abuse by the Iranians of the British hostages and their response to the abuse and response of the American POW’s held by the North Vietnamese...not for two weeks, but for years.
Compare these conditions with the ones in Gitmo, and tell the leftists to jam it, with a half-twist to the right...
There is a reason why the military is taught not to give up.
Next time, fight back.
*****Compare these conditions with the ones in Gitmo, and tell the leftists to jam it, with a half-twist to the right...****
Then we can compare the outrage of the left over Gitmo and the silence over Iran.
You too, eh?

The question is...would our people respond with the same bravery as the American POW’s held in North Vietnamese cages, after 40 more years of American (democrat) leftist infestation/indocrination?
I don’t know...I wish I could say “yes” ....but I don’t know.
Their silence is deafening.
I’m sure in a few days the usual suspects will start claiming it’s all Bushes fault and the Iranians were acting like that because of Gitmo and Abu Graib.
They are busy inventing Gitmo stories. Real stories about real violations don’t interest them.
I'm not sure the Vietnamese thing is an apt analogy, considering we were at war with North Vietnam and there was no chance of quick release for our airmen whether they cooperated or not. They didn't have the option to win their freedom through public apology, I don't think. Although Perhaps they'd have declined to apologize anyway, rather than become a propaganda tool for an enemy in a shooting war.
“They only had date scones at High Tea, it was bloody awful.”

While it is true that might not have been able to win their early release had they done as their captors wished, they could certainly have avoided additional torture and possibly even have gotten better treatment.
Much of the torture was a direct result of their not being cooperative.
But they opted to not cooperate as much as possible even though it increased the abuse they had to endure.
This despite seeing tv coverage in America (shown to them by the N. Vietnamese) of the marches against the Vietnam war and the mistreatment of returning soldiers by the leftists in America.
Compare their bravery in the face of being shown Jane Fonda looking through a N. Vietnamese anti-air craft gun.
(Needless to say I NEVER EVER watch ANYTHING with Fonda in it.)
I’m not much of a Fonda fan myself. I wonder if her father was a leftist as well.
May be this is what Ahmedi was trying to achieve? And he freed them later because it didn't spark wider conflict. He is begging for the war.
This was back when you could be a democrat and still appreciate where you lived.
Thanks for the info. I have to give credit to Henry Fonda for that.
I will say that many of the Democrats of the 40’s were every bit as leftist as the modern ones. More patriotic, though, alot of them.
Reflecting on Jane Fonda, I think she inherited some of her father’s courage. ‘Course, she seems to be a traitorous fool as well.
