FWIW, I saw the couple interviwed on the boob tube, and they're miserable and want to leave. They really want to leave. But I got the impression they can't afford any kind of major financial loss, especially since it looks like they're going to be the primary caregivers for their little girl from now on. Their daughter seems to be a dead loss. If I were the HOA, I'd concentrate on getting them help finding a buyer.
You said, in part: If I were the HOA, I’d concentrate on getting them help finding a buyer.

That sounds like an excellent suggestion. Failing that, perhaps they could consider jointly buying the property from this family. That would get them out of the area, and preserve property values for the neighboring residents. When the market improves, sell the house, perhaps at a profit. I don’t know how many people live in this community, but at $180K, 18 people at $10K each would cover it. 50 families could do it at less than $4K each.
Perhaps they are, and all the people who read this story should help them find a buyer or send them money, instead of blaming the problem on the HOA.
You hit the nail on the head ... the HOA should do what they can to help them find a buyer. A GOOD HOA would..
Our little neighborhood has an HOA - in fact I’m president. We have very FEW restrictions and the primary purpose is to maintain the park, pool and unpaved roads with the 24.00 or 48.00 a year each property owner pays a YEAR. It’s an almost impossible task. The reason I stay on the board is because every 5 years or so someone comes along and wants to do away with the pool. We enjoy the pool ... the kids in the neighborhood have a pretty nice central place to go in the summer rather than wander and cause trouble.
Unfortunately as with most times a group of people get together the whole “power trip” thing comes into play. It’s been an interesting study in human nature ... laugh..
I'm sure they do. I feel very sorry for them and their situation.
The problem is they want an exception to the rules, but once an exception is given, other folks will want an exception too.
Kinda negates the whole idea of having rules in the first place.
I saw them too. I don’t know if their HOA allows them to rent out their place while trying to sell it. I would hope they would allow that so the child can stay with the grandparents. At least the grandparents want to raise this child. I would be scared for the child to be in foster care in that state. Isn’t that the state that lost a child? As someone posted you don’t know when it could happen to you. And to the poster who blamed the grandparents for their daughter being on drugs clearly you are clueless. Parents who have tried to raise their children in the very best way can not be held accountable for what their adult children do. I have seen very wealthy families lose children to drugs. Drug addition can hit any family no matter how the child is brought up. Be glad you have never had it happen in your family. I would think that it is in the best interests of the child to stay with her grandparents & I pray she can. ~P~
