April 9, 2007 issue - It looks as if Fred Thompson is getting ready to run for president. Friends of the former Tennessee senator turned actor (anonymous to protect their relationship) say he's increasingly tempted to enter the 2008 Republican primaries, fueled in part by new polls that show he's got a serious shot at the White House. A Gallup poll released last week found Thompson ranked No. 3 behind front runners Rudy Giuliani and John McCain with 12 percent support among Republicansall before he's even formally launched a campaign. Last week Thompson was spotted in Washington lunching with former Senate majority leader Bill Frist, who has publicly urged his longtime friend to run for president. On April 18, Frist and Tennessee Rep. Zach Wamp will host Thompson on Capitol Hill, where he'll meet with House and Senate members to discuss his possible candidacy. Wamp, who heads a draft-Thompson committee, told NEWSWEEK that so many lawmakers have expressed interest in the meeting that organizers had to reserve a bigger room and extend Thompson's visit from one hour to almost a full day. "I really believe he's in," Wamp says. "I think it's only a matter of him getting his personal affairs in order".

The line that will do Rudy in and you heard it hear first: "If Rudy cut and ran against Hillary the first time around, why give him another shot?" I've been saying that from the moment Rudy declared his candidacy

Of course none of the Dems candidates can be considered experienced. Hillary was co-president.

"...I really don't hate Rudy, I just hope there is a better option. I don't hate Rudy either. In fact I supported him before I learned Fred was thinking of running.
I got called a RINO a lot. What I'm trying to understand is if I have not changed one core political belief in the last last twenty years how I was "a conservative" for almost two decades, a "RINO" for 3 months and now I'm back to being a conservative. I was a conservative all along. I just want Hillary to lose. The people who throw around the word RINO too easily are sickening.

My dumb friend... First of all, Hillary is unlikely yo be the dem candidate; it will likely be Gore. Second, You can't expect to run a liberal (Rudy) against a dem and win. What's the difference between the politics of Rudy and Hillary? NOT MUCH!
Hillary might be better, because she'll govern by the polls. She'll basically stick her finger in the wind... Just like her husband did. Rudy would just govern as a lib.

"Why do you want Hillary to win?"
Like I said in the earlier post, Hillary isn't even going to be the candidate.
I would like a real conservative to win... (That eliminates Rudy, since he's a liberal)
Thompson would be my choice. If not him, then Newt or Hunter.

Note to Thompson camp:
Have Fred go to the nearest County Courthouse and legally change his name to "That Guy from Law and Order" before announcing his decision to run.

I almost hated to post it, because I really don't hate Rudy, I like Rudy. He was a great Mayor. I am not sure about him as President, but could get on board. Here is my problem: For the last 6 years, out of blind worship to the GOP, so called conservatives have contorted themselves to excuse every manner of big spending and government intervention. What is scary about Rudy is that they are already doing that, a year before the primaries.

I have $100 set aside for Fred's Campaign, for the day he announces a place for me to send it.

If Fred Thompson has no chance of winning the Republican primary, why does he scare you so much?

Have Fred go to the nearest County Courthouse and legally change his name to "That Guy from Law and Order" before announcing his decision to run. That might work. The Rudy conservative will think "OK He's a liberal, but I'll vote for him to keep Hillary out"
