Meals Ready to Eat
By David Mac Dougall
Fox News
Sadr City, Baghdad This was the final day of our Sadr City embed, and we realized we've become experts on military rations, or MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). They're full of calories and carbs, a Dr. Atkins nightmare. But they do the job, sustaining soldiers (and journalists!) in tough times. Inside, there are usually crackers and peanut butter or cheese spread; a main dish; a cookie or cake; and powdered drinks. After just a week, we have already decided which MREs are our favorites.
I like the pasta. Cameraman Michael Pohl likes the spare rib (which curiously contains no actual ribs just a meat patty). Producer Nicola Sadler likes the beef enchiladas. We do a lot of swapping. I take Nicola's peanut butter; she prefers the cheese spread. Michael swaps chocolate mint cake for strawberry milkshake powder. It's really obvious which MREs the soldiers don't like; Cajun rice with beans, and jambalaya remain unopened.

I ate 1947 C-rations in Viet Nam and they were not too b ad until you had to eat them every day. In late 1967 they came out with some new stuff which was great for a while. I bought some MRE's and thought they were quite good. Mine were of the 3500 calorie version. I have not had any of the new ones but they have to be better than the freeze dried food.
I wouldn't call it meatballs and it sure wasn't BBQ sauce. It was the best from the old batch.
I probably have a scar from that P38. Dammed if I have one now, wish I did.
The can openers were great ... still have one.
As far as the cigarettes went, I'm not a smoker except for the occasional cigar, they were so dry they practically crumbled in your hand.
I remember an old Bill Mauldin cartoon (IIRC) with a war-weary looking Japanese officer saying to two bedraggled GIs, "We will surrender on condition that we be not required to eat honorable American delicacy named 'Spam'."

I thought I was the only one who commented on stories without reading them. lol!
Ham and Lima Beans.
My personal favorite.
Also my school cafeteria was very creative in its recycling efforts. The french toast, that wasn't eaten in the morning became Monte Cristo sandwiches at lunch the next day. And the chili we would be served at noon tasted identical to our previous dinner's spaghetti sauce. Nothing was wasted, it was just reconstituted into new forms.
Absolutely!!
i remember reading, "Rib-shaped Meat" on the package of a t.v. dinner... it was in one of those vending machines at work... it must have been in their for years... no one ever bought it...
this is what Jack-in-the-Box uses in their tacos...
IMO, C Rats were better than B Rats. Reconstituted milk - tasted spoiled when fresh.
As my teenage daughters would say, "Eyyeewwwww!" Gimme the Snickers bar, at least it's got identifiable protein!
"Puuleaase! I said salsa, not chutney! (snif!)"
I’ve known several people who think that Jack’s tacos are great but I’ve never even wanted to try those greasy looking things. I’ve also stopped eating Jack in the Box burgers. They use to be my favorite fast food until they decided to ‘improve’ them. If I want a ketchup drenched burger I can get it cheaper at Micky D’s.
