Tancredo to Announce Presidential Bid
AP via Breitbart.com ^ | Mar 30 2007 | JENNIFER TALHELM

WASHINGTON (AP) - Colorado Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo, an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration, will announce his bid for president on Monday.

Tancredo will kick off campaign with an announcement in Iowa, where political caucuses start whose the presidential nominating season, an official close to the congressman said.

Tancredo has flirted with a presidential bid for more than a year and began raising money for the effort in January. After taking in more than $1 million in two months, he has decided to make his run official, said the official, who asked not to be named ahead of Tancredo's official announcement.

Tancredo's office on Friday morning said that he will make a "major announcement" Monday on a Des Moines, Iowa, radio station.

Tancredo spokesman Carlos Espinosa would say only that Tancredo will announce his intentions and that his decision whether to run for president won't affect whether he will run again for his House seat.

Tancredo, a five-term House member who represents the Denver suburbs, is a leading supporter of securing the nation's Southern border with Mexico and cracking down on illegal immigration. He has used the issue to take on President Bush and Arizona Sen. John McCain, a leading contender for the GOP nomination.

Tancredo acknowledges that he is a long shot for president, but he has made no secret that he hopes to rattle McCain's campaign in Iowa by appealing to conservatives on immigration, abortion and other issues.

McCain last year co-sponsored a bill creating a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country now, though he has played a smaller role in the issue this year.

I answer your question about what immigration bill I support in the 110th Congress, but you are afraid to answer your own question. It's not surprising that a Tancredo basher on FR would respond that way.

The RNC shot it down. Why do you think put Martinez where he is?

I could go for that.

Fred could just turn the entire immigration area over to Tancredo, and the VP would actually DO something for a change.

Send some in for me too

Sure thing, I'll send the RNC some of those "Gringo de Mexico" bills on your behalf.

QUESTION
"It is my understanding that approximately 11.5% of all Republican seats in Congress were lost when Democrats won control of Congress in November 2007. Approximately 6.7% of the members of Rep. Tancredo's Immigration Reform Caucus lost their seats.

Why did the members of Rep. Tancredo's caucus retain their seats at a higher rate than Republicans did overall in Congress?"

ANSWER
"The RNC shot it down. Why do you think put Martinez where he is?"

??????? Please explain your explanation, 'cause it makes absolutely zero sense.

How does Mel Martinez, the RNC, Karl Rove, George Bush or all the king's horses and all the king's men have anything to do with members of Tancredo's caucus being re-elected at a higher rate than the Pubbies as a whole?

We have only one bill thus far.

Obviously, there are attempts to come up with a unified republican alternative. I don't know of anyone, except Bush, that thinks the GOP can be unified.

I am willing to bet money that you or tancredo would not even read, much less support, the plan being floated.

So what it boils down to is that GOP will end up supporting nothing, only trying to block any and all solutions.

As I have already pointed out, the GOP will lose because of this just as they lost last year because of this.

As many GOP insiders have said, if Tancredo is the face of the GOP, they are out of power for at least a generation, maybe two.

Well, I suppose it's a given that we'll get Rudy as the nominee with the conservative vote being split between Hunter, Tancredo, Thompson, Gingrich, and others.

The proof is in the pudding.

Where does Tancredo stand in the polls today?

So in other words, you have absolutely no proof to back your absurd assertion that somehow Tancredo's caucus members weren't re-elected at a higher rate than the Pubbies as a whole. But I think I know why you maintain such absurd notions...

"As many GOP insiders have said..."

Funny thing, how "GOP insiders" (if you're not one I'm sure you're dying to be) often have absolutely no clue as to how we out here in flyover country think. The "GOP insiders" sure had Ronald Reagan pegged in 1980, didn't they?

Yes, I understand that Tom Tancredo as a full political platform, he's a well-rounded family man and loves puppies. Unfortunately, you should know full well what will happen to Tancredo if he tries to break out of the single-digit pack and starts to threaten the MSM's "selected" Republicans Rudy McRomney. The smear campaign will begin in earnest.

The talking heads at ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN will express "concern" over Tancredo's "nativist" views. The NYT will run regular editorials saying Tancredo is an "extremist, Christian fundamentalist." Leftist activist will denounce Tancredo's "return to isolationism." And for the main course, one of the Left's select political hitmen will declare Tancredo a "racist" because it doesn't really matter whether he is or not, the charge of racism is all about being accused, not about whether it's true.

I'm not one of the people who says Tancredo has no chance, but whatever chance he may have is dependent upon his readiness and ability to fight the political battles that occur at the level of a Presidential election.

So? It's not like the drive-by media are going to give any Pubbie a chance, is it? I'm pretty sure Tancredo knows what's in store for him should he get the nomination. From what I've seen, he has a helluva lot less real baggage in his past than Rudy McRomney, and solid conservative credentials to boot.

What is the bill that "{w]e" have "thus far"?

Who are the insiders you quote?

Listed below some other immigration-related bills that I support:

1) H.R.19 - It has twenty-six cosponsors, including Rep. Tancredo.

2) H.R.26 - It has three cosponsors.

3) H.R.98 - It has twenty-five cosponsors.

4) H.R.131 - It has one cosponsor.

5) H.R.132 - It has two cosponsors.

6) H.R.134 - It has two cosponsors.

7) H.R.136 - It has no consponsors.

8) H.R.138 - It has one cosponsor.

9) H.R.350 - It has no cosponsors.

10) H.R.510 - It has no cosponsors.

You asked me to name an immigration bill that I support. I've now named for you ten House bills and one bill that has both a House and Senate version. You asked me to name an immigration bill that is supported by Rep. Tancredo. I have done that.

Can you name a single immigration bill that you support?

Speaking of polls, which Republican candidate running for president listed in the polls do you believe would make a good president?

Why are you afraid to say whether you support giving illegal aliens legal status and a path to citizenship?

Tancredo VP candidate? You MUST be joking. Neither Hunter nor Tancredo will have ANY effect on the others, they'll be ignored or swatted like flies

I'm waiting for Ben Ficklin to name the GOP insiders and actually provide a link or links to a webpage or webpages that subtantiate his claim that GOP insiders have made the claim about Rep. Tancredo that he says they have. Since he said GOP insiders, I'm sure that he won't simply give us the name of just one person.

I'm tired of waiting. Wasted waaaayyy to much time on FReep today! My lawn's not getting any more mowed, ya know. Good luck trying to get a straight answer, anyway.

I'm checking out those Tancredo sites, also. He, Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter all are very appealing to me, so I guess I have decisions to make. Be good.
