Fred Thompson Is No Ronald Reagan
The American Thinker ^ | March 26, 2007 | Steven M. Warshawsky

Posted on 03/26/2007 9:49:21 AM PDT by RepublicanPatriot

Yes, Thompson has portrayed strong executive leadership in his acting roles, but what reason do we have to believe that he will exhibit the same qualities in real life? Unlike Reagan, to whom he sometimes is compared, Thompson has never led a major labor organization, never served as governor, and never been considered one of the leaders of the conservative movement in this country.

We really don't know enough about this man to jump on the bandwagon.

You can read all about Thompson's stands on the issues HERE.

Most of the anti-Fred stuff comes out of the Rudy or Romney camps.

I think any lingering McCain supporters would rather have Thompson anyway and are just waiting for him to declare.

I fear people are mixing up the Fred Thompson Law and Order person from the real thing. We really don't know enough about this man to jump on the bandwagon.

I agree with you. If you look at his record while he was in the Senate it's a real mixed bag. I'm not thrilled about his total view on immigration. He also voted for McCain-Feingold. I'm not sure what his qualifications are to be CIC. All in all, he is, of course, way above Rudy, but I'm not getting all excited about him.

Fred's record is distinguished by his restraint, not his activism

Wow, doesn't that comment just make me want to jump on the Thompson bandwagon! Do you read what you write?

If you are a conservative, yes. If you are a liberal, I can see why you would be confused that legislative restraint is a virtue.

Do you read what you write?

Do you ever wonder if you're on the right website?

Let's not forget that back in the day, Reagan was derided as a "dunce" by most of the so-called elite in America

Didn't some guy named George H. Bush call his
economic policy "voo doo economics"
Whatever happened to that guy anyway?

I mean seriously, if you're that damn in love with Rudy or Mitt, fine, but questioning Thompson's intellect is just silly.

Liberals always call into question the intellect of conservatives. They did it to Reagan and Bush the Younger.

Which makes one realize that Fred's attackers are no conservatives.

I know that Thompson and his law firm defended a family of bid riggers from Mississippi and the family and Thompson got pretty close. Close enough that when the same family started to launder the money from the Marty Frankel embezzlement, Thompson got a lot of money from that family for his Senate run..I am suspicious because of that connection or maybe I am too close to the issue. I think that Hunter would be a better choice because of Thompson's links to the Mississippi "crime" family but then again, I am too close to the people. I have been attacked for what I know but no one has taken any measures to see if I am telling the truth. The links between the Senate Pro Tempore of the Ms Legislature and Thompson are closer than one thinks. I would like this to be a non issue but if some anti Thompson makes it an issue, it will stick.

it would help if the comments would reflect what the writer wrote. he is not discounting a run or a Thompson presidency. he is listing his concerns which are:

1. Most importantly, to my knowledge, Thompson has never held any high-level executive positions in government or business...I believe that such experience is critical for any presidential candidate -- but especially for a Republican who will be assaulted mercilessly by the mainstream media, by Democrats in Congress, by liberals within the federal bureaucracy, and by special interest groups, not to mention by NGOs, the UN, and the leaders of many foreign nations.

2. Unlike Reagan, to whom he sometimes is compared (see here and here), Thompson has never led a major labor organization, never served as governor, and never been considered one of the leaders of the conservative movement in this country.

3. So why is there so much interest all of a sudden in his potential candidacy? In my opinion, this reflects the deep disillusionment many conservatives feel over President Bush, and their hope that a "perfect candidate" will emerge to rescue them from having to choose from among the imperfect choices -- Giuliani, Romney, and McCain -- now available. While I share this disillusionment with President Bush, the notion that anyone, let alone Thompson, can be a "perfect candidate" is just silly.

4.In many ways, Thompson is a blank screen onto which dejected conservatives are now projecting their own policy prescriptions.

5. His apparent lack of drive to be president.

6. Of course, if Thompson were to become president, he too will have to make hard choices, set priorities, and accept compromises. Yet at this point, we know almost nothing about how Thompson would go about doing any of this.

The author's concerns except the lack of executive level experience will be answered in a campaign. the author also stated:

Following his refreshingly plainspoken appearance on Fox News Sunday on March 11, ...

There's a lot about Thompson to like.

Thompson has had a distinguished career in politics and public service, but he is better known for his many television and movie appearances.

the writer dismisses concerns about FDT in regards to his Senate experience and at the same time, even possibly by accident explains why the campaign will be successful. FDT will explain and sell to the American people conservative ideas and values in a way un-heard since Reagan. that is the comparison. the writer acknowledges the commentaries on Paul Harvey as "a lot to like",

Most recently, Thompson has garnered even more positive attention for his hard-hitting radio commentaries while filling in for Paul Harvey. Among other topics, Thompson strongly defended the Bush Administration's decision to fire the eight U.S. Attorneys; dared to criticize the saintly Gandhi for urging the British people during World War Two to surrender to the Nazis and the Jews to commit mass suicide; and argued that "it's time for a little plain talk to the leaders of Mexico" about American sovereignty and the need for Mexico to reform its left-of-center economic policies.
and then explains why he must question the possible candidate's similarities to Reagan. seems disingenuous to me.... I hold that an FDT campaign will unify the Republican party and bring Reagan democrats (yet another comparison) to vote Republican again. The writer understands and points out the imperfect choices -- Giuliani, Romney, and McCain -- now available but seems satisfied with them nonetheless. FDT is the best choice to save the country from a democrat Presidency or a democrat-lite Republican.

Oh, I'm not confused at all... I am amused that Thompson is now the candidate du jour. And yes, I know where I am, I come here for the humor.

Why does Thompson have an A at 73% and Hagel has a B+ at 82%? Either a number is wrong or a letter grade is wrong.

Oh, I'm not confused at all...

If you're liberal at heart, you would react that way. Conservatives understand that less is more in government.

I am amused that Thompson is now the candidate du jour.

He's a vast improvement over the three current front-runners.

Better than the Knox Pooley role. Good role, BTW.
