Yes, Thompson has portrayed strong executive leadership in his acting roles, but what reason do we have to believe that he will exhibit the same qualities in real life? Unlike Reagan, to whom he sometimes is compared, Thompson has never led a major labor organization, never served as governor, and never been considered one of the leaders of the conservative movement in this country.

Fred is the closest we going to find and he would make a fine President, period.

Very good column. Thompson supporters will need to answer these questions. I wonder if they can.

Look at various Thompson threads, and you'll find they've all been answered.

>> Reagan quit his day job in 1976 after losing the nomination to Ford, and campaigned relentlessly for four years, <<
True, but does that mean you would've voted against Reagan in '76, when that hadn't happened, yet? If so, are you recommending that we nominate a Gerald Ford in the meanwhile, to be crushe by Hillary the way Ford was crushed by Carter?

The Rudy-poo crowd is scared. The might have to vote for a conservative instead of Rudy.
I'll vote for Rudy or Fred against any Democrat running for president. I'd prefer Fred, but Rudy is twice as conservative as any Democrat in the field.

I think so, but I'm getting tired of many who'll only accept a Reagan clone & who act as if he never did anything wrong...

Thompson seems to have some Will Rogers and Mark Twain in him. Reagan doesn't come to mind.

There you go!!!! Not a 'new Reagan', but someone with that down-home, folksy charm. FDT is NOT afraid to say what is on his mund, and his ability to speak means he can tell the Defeatocrats to 'go to hell' in a way they will enjoy the trip.

Would you vote for a candidate that said the following?
quote....
"A North American accord--would permit achievement of that potential in each country beyond that which I believe any of them--strong as they are--could accomplish in the absence of such cooperation. In fact, the key to our own future security may lie in both Mexico and Canada becoming much stronger countries than they are today.
If I am elected President, I would be willing to invite each of our neighbors to send a special representative to our government to sit in on high level planning sessions with us, as partners, mutually concerned about the future of our continent. First, I would immediately seek the views and ideas of Canadian and Mexican leaders on this issue, and work tirelessly with them to develop closer ties among our peoples. It is time we stopped thinking of our nearest neighbors as foreigners."
unqoute
I voted for him and am darn proud I did.
Who said it?
Ronald Reagan, November 13, 1979.
As one of the original "Reagan Democrats" (read my FR profile) I liked Reagan from the get-go. There was something about his honesty and character and his ability to communicate. Fred may not be Reagan - but I get that same warm feeling inside when I listen to him.

>> While he waits, the party is coalescing around the guy who is actually demonstrating his hunger for the nomination. Fred Thompson's belly and lackluster record in the senate show how big his work ethic is. He is a decent man, but not presidential fodder. Like Gingrich, he is hoping to fill a vacuum if one arises. That's not a leadership. <<
Believe you me, Thompson is not hanging around, waiting. If he is at all interested in a campaign, he is rounding up campaign workers, feeling out donors, conducting issues research, etc. He is also performing cost-benefit and feasibility analyses of every aspect of running.
...just a little glimpse into the sausage factory...

It's a shame, how many freepers are too lazy to research Fred Thompson's well-documented history and verify his solidly conservative positions. Me, I'm too lazy to keep providing links, and fortunately there are many here who never get tired of doing that.
So you folks who say you don't know enough, or Fred's just some actor, or he's a blank screen: YOU are the blank screen! Read the links provided, search the Thompson threads, and educate yourselves.
Fred's the real deal. A genuine, lifelong conservative, a man of intellect, integrity and principle.
I didn't know that a month ago, but it wasn't hard to find out.

How did you manage to monitor Reagan's deep thinking? By reading what he wrote. DUH?!
To: RabidBartender
Quite a few early vocal supporters of Mayor Giuliani have quietly switched their support to Thompson, as well.
And there's not a darn thing wrong with that! I note the number of posters who have a reference to one candidate in their tagline, but are speaking affirmatively of another. This is as it should be.
The unfortunate thing is those who are so readily burning their bridges (sometimes while they're still on them!)

I think Rudy draws two groups of pubbies - the remnants of the Rockefeller Republicans who never liked having to form an alliance with the Red State rubes, and the authoritarian republican types who have little understanding of the importance of the Bill of Rights - who see government's job as protecting the citizenry, instead of the citzenry having a role in protecting itself from criminals AND government when it oversteps. Pro-libertine, anti-liberty.

Throw in a cult of personality mindset, and you have the Rudy boosters.
I think you nailed them.
