(CBS/AP) With calls of emotional blackmail from opponents, a measure requiring women seeking abortions to first review ultrasound images of their fetuses advanced Wednesday in the South Carolina Legislature.
The legislation, supported by Republican Gov. Mark Sanford, easily passed 91-23 after lawmakers defeated amendments exempting rape or incest. The House must approve the bill again in a routine vote before it goes to the Senate, where its sponsor expects it to pass.
Some states make ultrasound images available to women before an abortion, but South Carolina would be alone in requiring women to view the pictures.
Supporters hope women would change their minds after seeing an ultrasound and choose instead to keep the child or offer it for adoption.

It looks like it will go through. I think this is great news.

I certainly don't mean to cause any offense to anyone here as I have a strong pro-life opinion; however, this bill seems to be a waste of time and energy to me. I doubt it will cause a single woman to change her mind and it will be impossible to enforce the law requiring the doctor to show the images.

I take the positive side in hopes that some will see it as life and then will not abort it.
They should have a signed affidavit with each murder er, I mean abortion that says they saw the ultrasound. I am sure there will be ways around it though.

I can think of at least 3 women that I know personally who were told the fetus was a "clump of cells" and this helped ease their conscience in choosing abortion.
Later when they took the time to look at fetal development pictures there was sadness and bitterness.
One friend of mine was devastated.
I'm not sure what they plan on doing with a woman who refuses to look at the image, but it really is high time people quit avoiding the truth of what is getting sucked into those tubes.

Agreed that looking at such pictures may change one or two people's mind, but a law that's not enforcable is a useless law. Just political posturing and a waste of time. Just my opinion. The time and energy would be better spent lowering my taxes and cutting a bunch of useless spending. As far as abortion goes, that battle will take place in the Supreme Court at some point.

I personally believe - and have read - that this will have a profound effect on the decision of women who seek abortion. It was a very powerful thing when I went in for check-ups with my wife (and kids). It was a tremendously anxious and happy time for my wife and I.
While I don't read TIME Magazine, last week's cover featured a story that I assumed referred to this practice.

(maybe a none Luddite would like to post the link?)
I found the statement on the cover to be offensive and silly at the same time.
That being said, I guess I agree with your sentiment that - the law seems to be overreaching; pro-death doctors will not follow the law, conversely I anticipate that another law will not be far off in the making which will prohibit pro-lifers from using this method - Massachusetts, New Jersey and California progressively leading the way!
I think it would be best to keep this practice on the "down low" and under the radar in as much as that is possible. Let's face it, it wasn't on the cover of TIME Magazine as a clarion call to the lovers of life, but a wake up call to the dealers of death to get out there and find a way to outflank pro-lifers.

A lot harder to abort a human life you see developing in our body.

'Your words have iron in them' - Ten Bears (the Outlaw Josey Wales)
That is a good angle that you are coming with. Thank you for making me think about it.
I want to add that I hate the actions of the LSM (Lame Stream Media). I just got back from DC. I went to the Gathering Of Eagles. I am already disappointed with the media coverage of the GOE. So, any little thing that pertains to the media is irking me more then normal right now.
Again, thanks for the post.

I am sorry, I think the Ten Bears said, 'there is iron in your words'.
Man, I have seen the movie a thousand times. You would think I would have got it right the first time.
Well, at least I have a reason to pull the CD out and watch Josey Wales again. I love that movie. And it will give me a reason to turn off the LSM. You know, FNC sometimes gets on my nerve too.

I think this kind of legislation will do more to move forward the pro life platform than anything the federal government will ever do.

I think this is very wonderful news indeed. The GOP controls both houses of the legislature and the governorship in South Carolina. It's a great state!
By comparison, look at the mess the Dems are making in Colorado and New Hampshire on these kinds of issues - thanks to their absolute control there. NEVER VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS!
To: dl5192
But if it does cause ONE Woman to change her mind it's well worth the effort.

Good point. I hope the voters get that point by '08.
