They will have to pry my incandescent bulbs from my cold dead hands.

Yes - mercury. Not only that, but if you put them in poorly ventilated fixtures that are typical for incandescent bulbs, they overheat and fail at a far shorter life than the incandescents they replace and can catch on fire. (personal experience on this one)
All this shows is that Harmon is a total moron, and probably an excellent representative of the people who voted for her.

I have both types of bulbs in my ceiling at the office. The "new ones" that are rated with the same output as the standard bulb are much dimmer.
Amazing that otherwise intelligent politicians buy into this thinking they can stop global something or other, but they give it some reality in society it doesn't otherwise have and it will live on all the longer even while earth slips back into a little ice age in a few years.
heh.. i found that out the first winter i owned my house. i put a bunch of shoplights in my garage and a box of extra bulbs out there. they're all junk now.

The RATS have nothing serious to work on, apparently.
I like the new ones but I'm aware that they aren't as bright as advertised. Mine are 26 watt, advertised at 100 watt brightness but are actually closer to 60 watts in luminescence .
However they do appear to have a long life which offsets the cost a bit.
If you read the instructions, you would know you're not supposed to use CFLs in enclosed fixtures, with dimmers, photocells, and so on unless specifically mentioned. Overheating and failing is highly unusual, though it does happen. I've used plenty of CFLs "out of spec" with no problems.
The fact that they aren't listed for use in enclosed fixtures makes any legislation of the sort idiotic. Not only is it against the market, it would effectively be legislating against millions of existing light fixtures.
This is stupid. The new compact flourescent bulbs are no good in refrigerators and ovens, and don't fit in many older fixtures. Also, they don't come on to full brightness instantly, like incandescent bulbs.
In addition, the unit cost is more per bulb, so this will be a hardship for many elderly forced to live on what the government feels they should live on.
I use the new compact fluorescent bulbs in the fixtures where they fit and which are turned on for long periods of time.
This is an example of typical liberal feel good legislation which doesn't solve any problem, which causes other problems, and which costs people money.
The government that prevented us from buying a toilet that really flushes now wants to dictate what kind of light bulbs we can buy.

I'm replacing all my 60 watt old bulbs with 100 watt florescents. They're brighter, don't produce the high heat, will last longer, and cost less in the long run. Did have to get used to the 1/4 to 1/2 second delay after turning on the switch.
