China to Challenge Boeing and Airbus
Financial Times ^ | 3-18-07 | Richard McGregor

China plans to mount a head-on challenge to the dominance of Boeing and Airbus in the global market for big passenger jets by setting up a state-owned company to build the aircraft.

A statement on the government’s website issued late on Sunday said the state council – the cabinet – had taken an “important strategic decision” to begin research and development to enter the market.

Lets see - they have purchased models from all the major manufacturers and had years to reverse engineer them. This is the standard operating procedure for the WTO member, and Most Favorable Trade Status China....

You all still thinks it's a good idea to trade technology and buy our plane parts from China?

And they get subcontract jobs so gain experience with putting it all together.

And don't get me started on all those assembly lines the chicoms brought for "scrap"

It might not be all bad. We will probably be able to buy a new Dreamliner from Walmart for a couple grand.

I rode on a Tupolev back in 1996, from Hai Phong to Da Nang. It was a very cheap knock off of a 707, cheaply built (rattled) with engines too powerful for the airframe. There were cockroaches crawling across the interior walls! I was very happy to get off that plane.

Count on a Commie to bollox up a simple task.

Boeing was stupid to move part of the construction of jet parts to China -- out of greed they will give the Chinese the rope to hang their airline industry.

Stupid shortsighted idiots

I don't know about you, but I won't knowingly step foot on a Chinese plane anytime soon. They can't even make a decent car much less something that's supposed to fly...

Some the "free trade" zealots, such as Larry Kudlow, will probably applaud this development.

I can just hear it now, "I don't have problem with Boeing going out of business if it means that American airlines can buy cheaper aircraft, which will benefit the consumer".

The chinese are licking their chops at Airbust right now. They will simply have them move more and more assembly work to China in exchange for buying some planes.

A new pinglist:

Pudong at night.
pan-Asia pinglist.*
This pinglist covers a broad range of topics relating to Asia: culture, current events, politics, science, history, arts, etc.

Warning: This could be a moderate/high volume pinglist.

Note: This pinglist generally does not cover topics pertaining to soutwestern Asia (the Middle East); there are already a couple of moderate volume pinglists for that region of the world.

Ping if you see a pertinent thread.

*To get on or off this list, freepmail with the subjects Asia on or Asia off .
No message is necessary.

To get on or get off this pinglist, freepmail here, with the appropriate subject.

There is also a:
John 3:16 (New King James Version): "16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
This pinglist can terminate at any time, without notice.
If you have something to type (say) about these pinglist signs: they're too garish, too big, they don't easily come up on your computer, they're so butt ugly that they're burning out your retinas..... or even that you think they look decent, then go here and look AT ALL OF THEM, and vote. A prototype "slimmed down" version has been made for the Latin America pinglist. Don't wish for all of freeperdom to be angry and not type (say) anything about it. Personally find the signs appropriate (otherwise they'd have other colors, pictures, sizes, etc.), and of the opinion that currently all of the type should stay (after they get established, then the Notes and even the Warning, and potentially even the links to the other pinglists can be removed).

THERE HAVE ONLY BEEN THREE VOTES SO FAR; LOOKING FOR AT LEAST TEN.

This was obvious.
Too bad American manufacterers REFUSED TO LEARN that then you open upo a plant in China, you give them your technology. That is a betrayal of your corporate interests for a few short-term dollars.
It is also a betrayal of this countries investment into our military industrial base by corporations with miltary contracts.

Be sure to save your receipt because you'll be returning it when the wings fall off.

Be careful, you might be labeled as a "protectionist" like I was if you protest the selling of America to the lowest bidder (China).

It depends on what parts Boeing is having China build. Kind of like Intel's plan to build a chip factory over there - it'll be a 90nm fab, whereas Intel's plants here will be running at 45nm this summer (two generations ahead.) China is 15 years away, minimum, from being able to build a passenger plane that anyone but their own airlines will fly.
