"...It was launched on Oct. 4, 1957, and it scared the bejesus out of America. The Russians were experimenting with the atom bomb..."

Whoa! They had the bomb about eight years before that.

Bohemians and Beatniks...I refuse to think of them as always Leftists. To me a beatnik was addicted to jazz, progressive jazz, and other hip music and poetry. A bohemian was addicted to any one of the arts; painting, music, writing, et al. They were the starving artists who had to suffer and disavow materialism.

In those dark nights near Columbia, Tennessee did you ever see the Bell Witch or the ghost at Spring Hill?

Sorry, I do not recall from 1958 anything about the Bell Witch or the ghost at Spring Hill? I do know we passed through Spring Hill on 31 coming down from Nashville...

Whoa... I did not say "...It was launched on Oct. 4, 1957, and it scared the bejesus out of America. The Russians were experimenting with the atom bomb..." That was Dave Hoeksyra, Staff Reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times/ that said it!

Walter Winchell broadcast the fact that the Russians had the atomic bomb on his program in late August, 1948.

I was sitting in the dark back seat of my father's 1948 Plymouth sedan as we returned from Cape Cod on a late Sunday evening, a little after 10 PM.

Winchell's presentation was in his dramatic style accompanied by the typewriter sound effects. He basically reported that the Russians had the bomb and that we were all doomed to die in a nuclear firestorm.

I had nightmares about this for several years.
