Where Was the Outrage at Reno in 1993?

Newsweek's Eleanor Clift on Friday morning complained, as many liberals have this week, that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has drained all the independence out of his office, that he's acting too much like the president's "personal lawyer." In 1993, when Janet Reno announced the mass dismissal of all 93 U.S. Attorneys, no one demanded her resignation for her lack of independence from the White House. In fact, it could be because someone else was coordinating with the White House on how to run the Justice Department, the felonious one-man Webster Hubbell. At that time, the Wall Street Journal editorial page found a "fascinating exchange" in an interview Reno granted to NBC anchor Tom Brokaw just after the Waco debacle on April 19:

BROKAW: Once the fire broke out, what did you tell President Clinton?

RENO: I haven't talked to President Clinton yet, because I have other [sic] with me, have been talking to the White House while I've been talking with the FBI. And as I have said, this is my responsibility, I'm accountable for it, and I've been trying to respond to questions from you and others in the media.

BROKAW: With all due respect, General Reno, you mean that the President has not had a direct conversation with you, has not expressed curiosity?

RENO: The President has expressed extensive curiosity. He has had a direct conversation with Webb Hubbell, who was with me as I was talking to the FBI.

BROKAW: And what did he tell Webb Hubbell?

RENO: You would have, I should say, as I understand, he was talking with Webb Hubbell. But you should check and see.

BROKAW: Webb Hubbell did not share with you what the President was saying?

Perhaps there was no outrage like now, because it was 14 years ago, and the world has changed quite a bit and different people are thinking differently...

This same point came up a little while ago on NYC WABC talk radio. I don't remember hearing anything about Reno's actions then. (In hindsight, no big surprise.)

In that interview Reno is trying to defend Clinton's actions but she's hardly impressive. ...

You could even say she sounds shakey.

Life the religion of perpetual ortrage, the Party of Perpetual Outrage (the Rats) was in charge then, thus no outrage.

are you serious? Haven't you heard it said a million times that ALL AGs replace the entire US attorney staff when the White House changes hands? If it happened in 1993, then its EXACTLY the same as when Harriet Myers fired all the US attorneys in 2001. This is a very disingenuous post.

There was an outrage from the conservative press - several articles from the time have been reprinted on these threads.

It died pretty quickly, as this would have done had members of the Justice Department not lied about the reasons for the firing, thereby turning a non-scandal into a legitimate scandal. Time for more heads to roll before this gets any worse.

Reno was a Democrat.Different rules apply for Democrats.

Besides, when a Democrat does something that gets the attention of the media, other Democrats defend him/her.

When a Republican does something that gets the attention of the media Republicans lead the pack to crucify him/her.

That marks the ONLY time I have heard someone call this early defining Clinton Administration trait as "disingenuous" , on FR, at least. And unfortunately, you are WRONG/ I would expect this from a Newbie doing propaganda work for the Hillary campaign , or the DNC/
OK, let's FORGET about what you consider the entirely predictable and harmless firing of US Attorneys, and let's THEN turn our attention to EVERYTHING else the Clinton Administration consequently did, especially those things that were protected LEGALLY by the NEW attorney staffers/
