Thompson Seeking Political Operatives

"The hype over former Sen. Fred Thompson has some substance to it, as the actor-politician has already begun approaching experienced campaign hands in key states," according to the latest Evans-Novak Political Report.

"Thompson effectively embraced the Republican right when he ran for and entered the U.S. Senate. From the perspective of the Republican Party's conservative base, he stacks up well against each of the "Big Three" leading Republican candidates. His voting record (lifetime American Conservative Union rating: 86%) in the Senate is more conservative than that of Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain (lifetime ACU rating: 82%), none of his position-switches are nearly as bad or as recent as those of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), and nothing in his background is as negative as that of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R)."

"Given enough money, Thompson could make a good run at it by tearing down the conservative credentials of the 'Big Three' and then building himself up as a tax-cutting, pro-life former senator. His acting role on Law & Order does not hurt, either."

The official line goes something like "he voted for CFR so therefore he's a doppelganger to help McStain win the nomination".

Of course, they fail to mention that Rudy supported CFR as well. So that boomerangs on them.

I have seen very few conservatives criticize Fred over the last few days. But the Rudy boosters have been trashing him on the two or three points they have against him. And it is truly entertaining to watch them suddenly become Duncan Hunter fans.

Fred terrifies them. All the name recognition of Rudy without most of the liberal baggage. And far more conservative heft.

I still support Hunter, but I would have few problems supporting Fred if Hunter is unable to gain traction. And most of the Hunter supporters I've seen posting on the subject feel the same way.

Also Senator Inhofe had to take to the floor of the Senate with his speech on Theft of Nuclear Secrets when the Thompson investigation gave a bit of a whitewash to the whole deal.

The best part of Fred's possible candidacy to date is watching the likes of you spin yourselves silly attacking him. He must terrify you. Every time I think you can't possibly sink any lower, you prove me wrong.

Precisely. And he's likable. People tend to forget it's not just policy. A lot of the dumb-bunny indies and soccer moms vote like it's a popularity contest. Thompson can do well with them too. Rudy may be many things but likable isn't prominent in that list. It was common to say that, in NYC prior to 9/11, he was the most unpopular man in New York despite all the cleanup work he'd done on the city. They knew him well and they still fundamentally disliked him, his personal character, his abrasiveness.

It reminds me of LBJ considering running in '68. He asked his press secretary "Bill, why don't they like me?". Moyers replied, "Maybe because you're not a very likable man.". Same thing with Giuliani.

How do some people manage to not take on regional accents, or to shed same? Gingrich for example.

Gingrich was an army brat who lived everywhere. Still, my dad and his brother grew up in Brooklyn. My uncle had a quite strong New York accent, even though he moved to California in his mid-20's. My dad did not move to California until he was 40, and had almost no accent. I asked my dad why the difference. He said it was because he though the New York accent was ugly, and thus "never" spoke that way.

Lighten up. These are jokes which play upon the fact that he is known for being a tough cookie (conservative). I'd be first in line to vote for him over McRomniani but we can also have fun, can't we?

I liked J. C. Watts; seemed like a good man back when he was in the middle of the action. I also like Fred Thompson. President Fred Dalton Thompson, Vice President J. C. Watts - sounds better than a lot of alternatives to me.

Let them ALL run. No fear here. If Thompson knocks out Rudy so be it. That is what elections are all about. I personally like Thompson's persona and presentation, and think he is very smart. He will need all of that however to win the general, since I think he lacks Rudy's cross over appeal, at least out of the starting gate.

I am not persuaded however that Thompson will actually run however. I don't think he hungers for the job. He is just too damn normal.
